Even great teams can struggle to win 12 times in a row. Houston lost 46-40 at Navy. The Cougars were a bit sloppy, with three turnovers. Their defense couldn’t shut down the option. Navy pulled off its biggest upset since knocking off South Carolina in 1984.

This loss, barring incredible chaos, eliminates Houston from the College Football Playoff. Even with wins over Oklahoma and (potentially) Louisville. Houston would face a tough time arguing its way in over a two-loss Power 5 champion, given the schedule strength disparity.

That, of course, means Tom Herman could be available for a bigger program, such as Texas, at the end of the regular season.
