Chiefs Perform Illegal Double Pass, Punt a Ball into the Stands, Stun the Panthers Anyway
By Tully Corcoran
The Carolina Panthers led the Kansas City Chiefs 17-0 in the second quarter and 17-6 at the beginning of the fourth. Under these conditions, you’d imagine the Chiefs would need everything to go right in order to complete the comeback.
They did not.
First came the moment when Alex Smith rebounded his own pass (totally cool), then threw the ball again (totally illegal).
Then there was the moment when, with the game tied at 17 in the final minutes, Marcus Peters recovered a fumble, ran out of bounds with it, and punted the ball into the stands as if there is any way that wouldn’t be a penalty in the NFL.
The punt was only a five-yard delay-of-game penalty, and the Chiefs (7-2) beat the Panthers (3-6) on a field goal by Cairo Santos as time expired.
