LSU Reportedly Close To Naming Tom Herman Head Coach

Tom Herman is close to being named the head coach at LSU according a report from Chip Brown of Horns Digest. That report has since been confirmed by Chris Low at ESPN:

Many had Herman pegged for what could soon be a vacancy at Texas, so this is a bit of a surprise. Clearly it looked as if the Texas job was Herman’s if he wanted it, but Brown reports that as of Thursday the momentum for Herman to LSU appears to be nearly unstoppable.

Herman is in his second season as the head coach at Houston aver three seasons as the offensive coordinator at Ohio State. He has led the Cougars to a 22-3 record, including a 13-1 mark in 2015 and a Peach Bowl victory over Florida State. This season the 41-year-old has Houston at 9-2 and ranked 20th.

Herman grew up in Southern California, played football at California Lutheran and is a member of Mensa. He was a graduate assistant at Texas from 1999-2000 under Mack Brown, which is why many believed he would wind up there.

Herman was also college roommates with current LSU defensive coordinator Dave Aranda, so you can bet the two would be happy to link up again. Houston’s current offensive coordinator, Major Applewhite, is from Baton Rouge, so unless he gets offered a head coaching job this offseason, a move to LSU would be a homecoming for him.

If LSU indeed closes the deal on Herman, the Tigers will have locked up the guy who many believe will be the next great college head coach. It would be a major coup for the university.
