Clemson’s opening drive was aided by a 15-yard unnecessary roughness penalty by Alabama’s Reuben Foster. The linebacker clubbed Deshaun Watson up around the head after the Tigers quarterback had released a shovel pass. The Crimson Tide may have caught a break when the officials declined to review the play for a potential targeting call. Alabama eventually stuffed Clemson on 4th-and-1 to stymie the drive.
