College Football Playoff: Alabama Ekes in Over Ohio State

The College Football Playoff selection just happened and it was fairly cut and dry for the top three: Clemson, Oklahoma, and Georgia. For the fourth and final spot, there’s been a long debate over whether it’d be Alabama or Ohio State. Nick Saban emerged victorious in the nebulous committee room.

There was no real right answer here, in my opinion. Ohio State had a crushing loss to Iowa. Alabama didn’t beat anyone that spectacular. Bama would likely beat Ohio State on a neutral field, but what you do before that matters.

The committee wound up choosing an Alabama team that due to some fatigue as well as lack of regional diversity is going to hurt ESPN’s ratings for the playoffs, but I can’t sit here and say they got it wrong.

This outcome, with the Big Ten and all their money and living alums, could increase the groundswell for an 8-team playoff.
