The biggest names in the National Hockey League have gathered in San Jose, California for Saturday’s All-Star game at the SAP Center, an annual celebration of the finest talent the sport has to offer.

One of the most anticipated weekends in the hockey calendar kicks off with the skills competition on Friday at 9 p.m. ET (NBCSN), with the All-Star game set to break tradition from its usual Sunday scheduling.

Friday’s skills competition (9:30 PM) will serve as a welcome appetizer to Saturday’s fixture and pits the NHL’s top maestros against one another across six events, each offering a $25,000 prize to the winner. Those events are Save Streak, Premier Passer, Puck Control, Accuracy Shooting, Hardest Shot, and Fastest Skater.

But Saturday brings the big show, with four teams representing each of the NHL’s four divisions due to meet in a three-on-three, single-elimination format.

Washington Capitals superstar Alexander Ovechkin was expected to captain the Metropolitan Division team but opted to sit Saturday’s fixture out and rest instead. Ovechkin leads the NHL goal table with 37 this season, while Jeff Skinner (Buffalo Sabres), Brayden Point (Tampa Bay Lightning) and John Tavares (Toronto Maples Leafs) are nearest to him with 30 goals apiece.

Edmonton Oilers center Connor McDavid will captain the Pacific Division team and enters All-Star weekend as one of the youngest and most revered players in the league.

Two victories are all it will take to be crowned NHL All-Star champions, as the best in the business prepare to throw down in San Jose.

The Pacific Division has won the All-Star game in two of the three years it’s been held in its current format, and McDavid will hope to make it three from four as he captains the team for the third year in a row.
