Two Internet Writers May Have Cost Chris Carpenter the NL Cy Young

The BBWAA has acknowledged the internet folk of late, but their glasnost hit a snag in this year’s NL Cy Young voting.  Both ESPN.com’s Keith Law and Baseball Prospectus’ Will Carroll bucked conventional wisdom slightly, leaving St. Louis starter Chris Carpenter off their ballots.  This mild disparity may have cost Carpenter the award.

France Beating Ireland: It was the Ref’s Fault, Not Thierry Henry

Thierry Henry controlled the ball with his hand.  He flicked it to William Gallas who headed it into the net.  The goal, scored in extra time, sent France to the World Cup.  On the surface it’s an unrequited romantic narrative.  The heroic Irish were felled by dastardly Frenchman.  The incident played firmly into prominent stereotypes and, unsurprisingly, the media reaction was harsh.

Knicks a “Given” to Bid for Allen Iverson

Iverson to Knicks? A source close to the Knicks told the New York Times it’s “a given” the Knicks will pursue Allen Iverson after he clears waivers tomorrow evening.  Assuming there’s no bidding war, they could get him for the veterans’ minimum, $1.3 million, as they still have their $5.8 million midlevel exception.  Little risk.  They’re 1-9.  Why not? World Cup Qualifying: Henry’s “Hand of God” Sends France to South Africa

An offside Thierry Henry handed the ball blatantly, before flicking it to William Gallas for a header in extra-time.  France beat Ireland 2-1 as Irish chants of “Cheat, Cheat” punctured the background.  Sportsmanship would dictate the match be replayed.  It will strengthen calls for video replay.

Brendan Shanahan Retires From NHL

Retired: Brendan Shanahan has retired from the NHL at age 40 after 21 seasons.  He’s an eight-time all-star, and scored 656 goals ( a further 60 in the playoffs).  He won an Olympic Gold Medal with Canada and three Stanley Cups with the Detroit Red Wings.  He also holds the unofficial record for Gordie Howe Hat Tricks (goal, assist, fight in same game) with nine.  He lived near me when he played for Detroit.  An array of king-sized candy bars on Halloween.  Class epitomized. Former Wrestler Trying to Derail Linda McMahon’s Senate Campaign

4903530Former professional wrestler Superstar Billy Graham is speaking out against Linda McMahon’s Connecticut senatorial campaign.  He says McMahon was intimately involved in her husband’s business, which condoned steroid use and exploitation of wrestlers.  He also believes efforts to clean up the sport, no more blood and elimination of bra and panty matches, were a direct result of her senate run.  He plans to travel the state speaking against her next summer. Getting Delusional With Gary Bettman

It’s been clear to everyone that the NHL’s policy of expansion and southern relocation in the 1990s was a catastrophe.  Well, everyone except NHL commissioner Gary Bettman.  Despite the league needing to bail out and subsequently buy out the Phoenix Coyotes, Bettman continues to defend the policy.

Fourth Tennessee Player Arrested in Two Weeks

Another Vol Arrest: Tennessee DB Nyshier Oliver has been charged with shoplifting.  The freshman allegedly tried to hide a $110 polo shirt in a shopping bag on Nov. 7.  He’s the fourth Tennessee player to be charged with a crime in the past two weeks.  These troubles would all be solved if Kiffin just let players be paid like USC.
