The goal, scored in extra time, sent France to the World Cup. On the surface it’s an unrequited romantic narrative. The heroic Irish were felled by dastardly Frenchman. The incident played firmly into prominent stereotypes and, unsurprisingly, the media reaction was harsh.

Iverson to Knicks? A source close to the Knicks told the New York Times it’s “a given” the Knicks will pursue Allen Iverson after he clears waivers tomorrow evening. Assuming there’s no bidding war, they could get him for the veterans’ minimum, $1.3 million, as they still have their $5.8 million midlevel exception. Little risk. They’re 1-9. Why not? Retired: Brendan Shanahan has retired from the NHL at age 40 after 21 seasons. He’s an eight-time all-star, and scored 656 goals ( a further 60 in the playoffs). He won an Olympic Gold Medal with Canada and three Stanley Cups with the Detroit Red Wings. He also holds the unofficial record for Gordie Howe Hat Tricks (goal, assist, fight in same game) with nine. He lived near me when he played for Detroit. Former professional wrestler Superstar Billy Graham is speaking out against Linda McMahon’s Connecticut senatorial campaign. He says McMahon was intimately involved in her husband’s business, which condoned steroid use and exploitation of wrestlers. He also believes efforts to clean up the sport, no more blood and elimination of bra and panty matches, were a direct result of her senate run. Another Vol Arrest: Tennessee DB Nyshier Oliver has been charged with shoplifting. The freshman allegedly tried to hide a $110 polo shirt in a shopping bag on Nov. 7. He’s the fourth Tennessee player to be charged with a crime in the past two weeks. These troubles would all be solved if Kiffin just let players be paid like USC. (Tennessean)
