AOL Sports Attempts to Become a Player in the Online Battle for Eyeballs

Three splashy, diverse newspaper hires is one way to grab attention at the start of a New Year. AOL Sports, which lost Jason Whitlock to FOX Sports last year, has just secured the serves of Lisa Olson, formerly of the NY Daily News, who was essentially ousted last year by insecure colleague Mike Lupica; Kevin Blackistone, who used to toil in Texas, but moved to DC a few years ago and now is a fixture on the still-unwatchable Around the Horn; and a perpetually angry man who is allergic to locker rooms and probably was detested on the sports scene in Chicago as much as Blago is on the political scene. Weekend Square Down

As far as actual news goes, this was a fairly slow weekend. Most of the stories were about people talking about things that had happened, as opposed to things actually… happening. Though, Stephon Marbury did get a tattoo – on his head of all places. And some guy got cartwheel-kicked in the face. Oh yeah, Packers’ fans protested to have the Green Bay reinstate Favre. Now, I’m not usually one to condone violence, but if Quentin Dunbar is in the area, I wouldn’t be upset if he visited Lambeau Field with his metal pipe.

The two things that will stick with me this weekend are this movie and our new-found, friendly neighbors to the North.

Sharapova Advances

Big night for sports on television. The Penguins will continue to try to climb back into their series with Detroit and Kimbo Slice will make his primetime ass-kicking debut. Until then – filler.

Maria Sharapova had a bit of a scare this morning at the French Open. The first set lasted 81 minutes before she finally closed out a tie-breaker to win 7-6. She then cruised through the second set 6-0 against Karin Knapp.

From ESPN:

“It was like my twin sister was here, and then Maria actually made her flight and made it for the second set,” Sharapova said. “I definitely became a lot more aggressive and stepped in and didn’t give her too many easy balls.”
