Reform the NBA Draft: Place Every Team in Lottery

NBA, NBA Draft 81 Comments »

The NBA Draft lottery was introduced in 1984, to stop from teams tanking the season for the top pick.  Initially equal chance for non-playoff teams, it has been reformed twice since to shift odds toward teams with worse records.  Unfortunately, the lottery is not working and teams are tanking.  The draft should have a straight lottery for the top 3 picks, including all 30 teams.

Thoughts on 30 for 30: Without Bias

College Basketball, ESPN, Movies, NBA Draft 96 Comments »

It’s hard to find a more classic tragedy than Len Bias.  He was a Maryland basketball phenom, the #2 overall draft pick and the extender of the Celtics dynasty.  He achieved his greatest dream.  He had it ripped away in a dreadful night of stupidity, as an overdose of cocaine ended his life.

Wayne Ellington’s Girlfriend Takes You Into the Night (With an Assist From the FIU Cheerleaders)

Cheerleaders, Media Gossip/Musings, NBA, NBA Draft, Video 226 Comments »

Hopped on a plane Friday and when we landed, there were a deluge of emails about the uncanny hotness of Wayne Ellington’s 19-year-old busty girlfriend. He’s going to Minnesota; she’ll remain a Drexel undergrad who will likely spend the summer sifting through a slew of offers from the likes of Maxim, Playboy, and whatever magazines are left in that genre. Has there ever been a “Girls from the CAA” feature, anywhere? Read the rest of this entry »

NBA Draft, Leftover Edition: The 76ers, a playoff team last season but in need of a point guard since it doesn't want to pay an aging Andre Miller, took UCLA's Jrue Holiday with the 17th selection. Holiday's a fantastic athlete who struggled out of position for one year at UCLA. Immediately, the Nuggets traded up to the 18th pick to take a potential heir apparent to Chauncey Billups, UNC's Ty Lawson. After Lawson, Atlanta scooped up Wake's Jeff Teague, who's a combo guard, but also was unstoppable at times in the ACC. Then the Jazz took Eric Maynor, the kid from VCU who beat Duke and nearly Pitt in the 2007 NCAA tournament. From 17-21, four teams who made the playoffs took point guards. Three of them had two or more years of experience. Of those four teams, Philly that might have benefitted most from taking an experienced point guard (in the East, healthy Elton Brand). The 76ers took the 'upside' guy. Brick. (25)
Ricky Rubio: Here's where things stand - the St. Paul Pioneer press reported that Rubio was to meet with clueless Minnesota GM David Kahn Sunday. Kahn has refused to comment on the situation. We thought there was a 24-hour window after the draft in which Rubio could get dealt, but now this Kahn clown is just going to two PGs. Guess he figures if Rubio must go back to Europe for a year or two, he's got Bassy Telfair - who had the best month of his career to close the season - as a backup. Though we'll have to wait until July is over to make this proclamation, we're pretty certain the Wolves will be one of the 3-4 worst teams (Phoenix? Sacramento? Milwaukee?) in the league next season. Loser has the best shot at ... UNC's Ed Davis? (25)

Amare Stoudemire to the Warriors for Steph Curry?

NBA, NBA Draft 39 Comments »

The Phoenix Suns and Golden State Warriors are considering a deal that would send Amare Stoudemire to Golden State in exchange for double-doubling big man Andiris Biedrins and the rights to yesterday’s first round pick Stephen Curry.

Two issues are reportedly a concern.

NBA Lottery History: Here's an in-depth study on how white guys who have been drafted in the lottery in the past 20 years have fared in the NBA. Form your own conclusions. And yes, emailers, we know - the Pacers can now roll out an all-white lineup with Hansbrough. Foster, Murphy and Hansbrough up front; Dunleavy and Diener in the backcourt. Have no qualms with the Hansbrough pick. Though we poked much fun at Psycho T during his UNC days, we're rooting for him in the League. Wouldn't surprise us if he had at least two seasons where he averaged a double-double. [Ballin' is a Habit] (8)

David Kahn, New GM of the Timberwolves: A Toxic Blend of Isiah Thomas and Chris Wallace

NBA, NBA Draft 67 Comments »

We could understand the firing of Kevin McHale. The stockpiling of draft picks – while parting with the team’s best backcourt scorer – was beyond questionable. And then, in what ESPN’s Chad Ford called “one of the all-time, mind-boggling moves in draft history,” Minnesota drafted two pure point guards at 5 and 6. Within an hour, Ricky Rubio’s agent was begging the T-Wolves to deal him to the Knicks; his parents applied pressure by saying Rubio could return to Spain for 1-2 years. The team’s twittering star, Kevin Love, had hoped the team would go with Davidson’s Stephen Curry. Read the rest of this entry »

NBA Draft First Round, Picks 20-30 (And Ricky Rubio Apparently Wants Nothing to Do With Minnesota)

NBA Draft 156 Comments »

[Update, and it's major: Ricky Rubio's father says that his son is likely staying in Spain 1-2 years. They're begging Minny to deal him, and that clown Kahn won't do it. via here]

20. Utah Jazz: Eric Maynor, PG, VCU. Hmmmm. They have one of the elite PGs in the NBA, and they draft … a PG. Maybe the plan is to play Deron off the ball more this season?

21. New Orleans Hornets: Darren Collison, UCLA. Another bizarre pick. You have CP3 … so you draft a smurf? Would have been smarter to take a chance on a scrub like BJ Mullens. Read the rest of this entry »

NBA Draft Open Thread, Picks 1-19

NBA, NBA Draft 200 Comments »

#1. Los Angeles Clippers — Blake Griffin, PF, Oklahoma

No surprise here. Blake Griffin trains on the beach and is apparently the most driven basketball player alive. With that said, the guy really deserves immunity from the Clips and the Grizz. Oh well.

***

#2. Memphis Grizzlies — Hasheem Thabeet, C, UConn

The dude loves soccer like Hakeem Olajuwon and wears glasses that would make Paris Hilton weep. Approve. However, he calls himself “Hasheem the Dream.” Disapprove. Get an original NBA nickname.
