Sammy Sosa invited radio host Enrique Santos to his birthday party in Miami. Santos, trying to be funny, showed up with a heavy tan (blackface?), and on the red carpet, told the press, “I’m currently using a cream which has darkened my complexion.” Then, a publicist went up to Santos and told him he his joke wasn’t funny and he wasn’t getting into the party. At Jim Gray’s 50th birthday party in Vegas (!) last weekend, Bill Walton recalled the time he wanted to knock Phil Jackson out. After a game, Jackson refused to do interviews unless Jim Gray left the room. Gray departed, and Walton filled in. “I should have punched (Jackson) in the nose and walked out,” Walton said. Solid turnout for Gray’s b-day: Muhammad Ali, Larry King, baseball announcer Joe Morgan, Eric Dickerson, Jerry West, Julius Erving, and Don Shula. [LVRJ]

John Wetteland, a dominant closer in the 1990s with the Yankees and Rangers, has been hospitalized in Dallas, Texas after an alleged suicide attempt. Various reports out of Dallas claim that Wetteland’s wife allegedly called police because Wetteland had a gun and was going to harm himself. When police arrived, Wetteland reportedly said, “he needed help” and was taken to a hospital with what is being called a “mental health issue.” [CBS]

Sammy Sosa to “Primer Impacto,” a program on Univision: “It’s a cream that I have, that I use to soften [my skin], but has bleached me some. I’m not a racist, I live my life happily … I had been using the cream for a long time and that, combined with the bright TV lights, made my face look whiter than it really is. Joe Montana, the legendary Hall of Fame QB, is selling his 9,700 square foot “Tuscan villa-style” mansion - which sits on nearly 500 acres in Calistoga, California - for $49 million. It contains an equestrian center with an indoor arena (pictured). The slideshow is impressive, as is the Montana family crest. [WSJ]

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, my father’s favorite basketball player and the leading scorer in NBA history, revealed that he has leukemia. In an interview on GMA, Jabbar said that when he found out last December, he thought it was a “death sentence.” But like his former teammate who has HIV, Magic Johnson, Jabbar is doing well today. I took in my first NBA game on Dec. 17, 1985 with my Dad when the Lakers visited the Knicks. LA won, as Jabbar bested 1st year pro Patrick Ewing (at least that’s how I remember it). The game was scintillating, and afterward, we memorably walked about 20 blocks in freezing weather and marveled at how a 38-year-old Jabbar looked so graceful flipping that skyhook over the awesome young rookie from Georgetown. That’s the day I began to love the NBA. [LAT, NYT]
