Charles Barkley a Late Addition to the Anti-bloggers Coalition

Blogging, Former Athletes, Media Gossip/Musings 65 Comments »

charles-barkley-auburnIt’s been a while since TBL has called out a sports celebrity for a profound disdain of “the blogosphere,” but Charles Barkley’s statements on The Dan Patrick Show Wednesday seem fitting to again highlight such ignorance: Read the rest of this entry »

TMZ Sports: A bit surprised at how much pub TMZ Sports has received in the last week. They began contacting bloggers a few weeks ago. TMZ Sports will provide blogs with  more ammo and athletes will obviously be annoyed. It will however, destroy the Huffington Post. Remember the hype for that site? What a bust. If it didn't focus strictly on SEO and dominate google, we wouldn't even know it existed. Where TMZ Sports will really come into play is if some character shows up with photos that prove athlete X is gay, and TMZ buys those for thousands of dollars. (Just a guess, but TMZ won't be the go-to place for photos of, say, Jimmy Clausen playing beer pong or Brady Quinn dancing at AJ Hawk's wedding.) Then ESPN and the rest of the sports media will be at a crossroads on whether to report about something that the internet will be buzzing about. And yes, if TMZ and Deadspin are willing to pay for newsworthy, exclusive photos, then so are we. [NYT] (25)
Club Trillion: Did you know the background behind "Club Trillion" is that Ohio State basketball player/blogger Mark Titus would only get garbage minutes at the end of games, and his line in the box score would have 12 zeroes, or, a trillion. Moments before the 2007 championship game between Ohio State and Florida, Titus went to coach Thad Matta and said, “For what it’s worth, I got five fouls to give.” Titus pointed to the end of the bench. “I’ll be right down here if you need me.” Terrific read. Flyers Apparently Not Split by Rumored Affair: "I don't know how a person [the writer] can sleep with himself at night when he does something like that. I've been buddies with Carts for a few years now, and obviously that stuff is totally untrue," said Scott Hartnell, who denied his wife slept with his teammate, Jeff Carter. "This is the second time in recent months that a Philadelphia professional athlete has been tarred by an obscure blog. In the other case, a blogger speculated, with no sources, that Phillies outfielder Raul Ibanez might be using performance-enhancing drugs." [Philly Inquirer] (40)

Notre Dame Coaching Search: To prove a point, a guy made up a completely unbelievable rumor - Notre Dame was very interested in Wisconsin coach Bret Bielema. Then, he sent it to a sports blog as a "tip," which of course ran with it without even checking. Since this is the internet, the "rumor" made its way around the web ... and a newspaper was forced to check it out. An ESPN blogger even fell for it. [ND Nation] (15)

high_horseFinally, the weekend has arrived. I think we all need a little break after what we’ve been through in the last few days.  If you feel like you need an extra shower (cold, of course) I understand. Now, let’s try and put the events of this week behind us. As I said, the weekend is here. It’s a time for fun and debauchery.

Hmm… Maybe everyone would be better off if we just skipped to Monday. Read the rest of this entry »
