2009 NFL Preview: Oakland Raiders

2009 NFL Previews, Video 29 Comments »

al_davis_and_darth_davis_2Worst owner in the league. Under .500 for six years in a row. Questionable draft decisions from 2004-2009, with the exception of D-Mac. An insufferable fan base. It’s been debacle after debacle in Oakland for the last six years, and that’s not ending this year, despite the feeble nature of the AFC West. Read the rest of this entry »

2009 NFL Preview: San Diego Chargers

2009 NFL Previews 89 Comments »

Ah, the team TBL loves to love. And what’s not to love, really? They have one of the league’s top offenses, playmakers at all three levels on defense, a punter with a robotic leg and an electric RB/return man playing for the franchise tender behind a former MVP. Oh, their coach? Yeah, about that...

What happened in 2008: Philip Rivers became the fourth-best QB in football, LaDainian Tomlinson continued to erode, Shawne Merriman took the year off, Antonio Cromartie played the season on a hip fractured from fornicating, Shaun Phillips discovered he’s merely adequate without Merriman’s presence, Eric Weddle grew into a solid strong safety, and Norv was Norv — a boob. The Chargers went 8-8, won a playoff game and went home unsatisfied. Read the rest of this entry »

2009 NFL Preview: Kansas City Chiefs

2009 NFL Previews, Athlete Wives, Jason Whitlock, Video 37 Comments »

When the bronze sculpture of the late Derrick Thomas was unveiled in Canton this summer, the book closed on an era in which his team, the Kansas City Chiefs, was the third winningest of the 90s and flirted with postseason success to little consequence.

It’s fitting that Thomas would be inducted a decade after his passing. It sends off the Carl Peterson era (well, Clark Hunt kind of did that last winter) and it precedes a year in which Kansas City is under a new regime for the first time in 20 years. Read the rest of this entry »

2009 NFL Previews: Denver Broncos

2009 NFL Previews, Video 40 Comments »

Andy Hutchins, in one of his last assignments as an intern, previews the Denver Broncos.

How bad are things in Denver?

No matter what the Raiders do this offseason (between the head-scratcher selection of Darrius Heyward-Bey in the the NFL Draft and the small-scale insurrection in the coaching ranks, they’ve done plenty), the Broncos will have the most tumultuous off-season in the AFC West—and perhaps, by extension, the NFL. 2009 NFL Previews: Houston Texans

2009 NFL Previews, NFL, Video 69 Comments »

Last season – They started 0-4, but finished 8-8. Steve Slaton had a promising rookie campaign and Mario Williams came into his own. Unfortunately, this is all anyone remembers from the ‘08 Texans. Read the rest of this entry »

2009 NFL Preview: Jacksonville Jaguars

2009 NFL Previews 90 Comments »

The Jaguars are one of the least-interesting teams in the NFL. Few people are projecting them as a playoff team. Enjoy.

Jones-Drew. As in Maurice. MJD. For the first time in his career, he  won’t split carries/RB duty with Fred Taylor (now in New England), so everyone’s projecting a big (1,500 yards?) season. Not so sure about that big of a year, but his ypc aren’t likely to go down for a thrid year in a row. Read the rest of this entry »

2009 NFL Preview: Indianapolis Colts

2009 NFL Previews 44 Comments »

Let’s get this out of the way quickly: The 2009 Colts have the potential to be the best in the Peyton Manning era. Yes, even better than the pre-Freeney injury 2007 Colts. As is the case every year, if they’re healthy at the team’s key positions — QB, OL, DL, LB — heading into the playoffs, Jim Irsay and his rattail have a great shot at hoisting the Lombardi come February. Now, about that left tackle spot … Read the rest of this entry »

2009 NFL Preview: Tennessee Titans

2009 NFL Previews 9 Comments »

The Titans play in possibly the best division in the NFL, have an ancient starting QB, they lost one of the league’s most dominant players this offseason via free agency, and they have a petulant “franchise” QB-in waiting taking up a giant portion of their salary cap. But they also play a hard-nosed brand of football that gives every opponent headaches, manage to turn mid-level free agents into above-average starters, and are led by a mafioso-looking quasi-genius coach. They’re quite the enigma. Read the rest of this entry »

2009 NFL Preview: Cincinnati Bengals

Let’s open here with three names for the 1990s that we love laughing at: David Klinger (went 6th overall in the horrendously bad 1992 draft), Akili Smith (went 3rd overall in the 1999 draft), and Bruce Coslet (among Norman Chad’s golden rules in football: “Never sign Bruce Coslet to a multiyear contract”). 2009 NFL Preview: Baltimore Ravens

2009 NFL Previews, NFL, Video 114 Comments »

2858012197_cb52e57442Whether it’s a good season or a forgettable one, does the general theme ever really change for the Baltimore Ravens? Each year they’re led by an absurdly vicious defense that keeps them in the majority of their games long enough for the limping offense to put some points on the board and narrowly escape with a win.  Much like every other team in the NFL, the parts have certainly changed, particularly on the offensive side of the ball, but it’s really just more of the same — Joe Flacco is not a whole lot different than Trent Dilfer.
