Help!: Mark Zuckerman spent nearly a decade at the Washington Times covering baseball. When the paper dropped its sports section in December, Zuckerman decided to start a blog. Now, he's trying to raise $5k to get down to spring training. So far, he's raised $4k. Send him money if you want to have access to exclusive Jim Riggleman info on the 74-win Nationals. Comscore December 2009: No Holiday Slump

Media Gossip/Musings 18 Comments »

10_brooklyn-decker_09We’re a few weeks late on the December numbers, but you’ll find them below. All the big boys had a terrific month. Can they thank Tiger Woods? He got in the accident late in November, and there was Tiger news seemingly every day (every hour?) in December. You’d think traffic would slow down around the holidays with everyone taking time off work and spending time with family instead of surfing for sports news … but no. We’ve included the December 2008 numbers as well so you can see the kind of growth everyone’s had. (And because we always have trouble coming with an idea for a photo here: Brooklyn Decker.) Dan Shaughnessy: Friday in the Boston Globe, he wrote, "Peyton Manning is better than Tom Brady. There. I said it." After Manning threw a pick-six late in the 4th quarter and the Colts lost to the Saints, Shaughnessy changed his tune. "OK, maybe I jumped the gun a little. I got caught up in the moment." Way to treat the printed word as if it were a moment on Around the Horn. When was the last time Shaughnessy wrote something relevant? This officially puts him in Jay Mariotti territory. We're done with this clown. [via Cowherd] (171)
NBC: After years of doing nothing online, NBC is finally trying to ramp up its sports dealings on the web. It acquired Pro Football Talk last year and has now created Hardball Talk (baseball, obviously) and Pro Basketball Talk. Considering how far NBC is behind its TV competitors online - Fox Sports and CBS Sports - this mountain will take years to climb. In addition to luring bloggers, we hear that Ira Windeerman of the Sun-Sentinel will be contributing to NBC's basketball site. It'll be interesting to see if more papers are going to let their underpaid writers contribute to online outlets while everyone slugs it out for clicks and eyeballs. [SBJ] (16)
stephen a smith crazy twitterStephen A. Smith: He's writing again for the Philadelphia Inquirer. His first piece is on the 76ers. Presumably, he flew down from Miami Friday to watch their game against the Hornets, hence the dateline. Then, he flew back to Miami in time to offer up perhaps the most self-serving media tweet of 2010. [Inky] (18)

Suzy Kolber: If you want to read a journalist slobber all over Suzy Kolber, here you go. "When Suzy Kolber appears on the TV screen with a microphone interviewing athletes for ESPN ... most guys think the same thing: Gosh, she's cute. It's an understandable reaction. She is. But there's so much more there than meets the eye." No mention of the home-wrecking romance with her MNF producer. Please tell us we didn't sound this awestruck in the Brooklyn Decker interview.
