George Hill is apologizing to his team, fans, family and girlfriend for some nude pictures he took last year. “A year ago I made a mistake and take full responsibility for my actions. I have matured and learned from this episode.” For those of you that enjoyed last month’s theme of Greg Oden’s member, just wait. Since Hill isn’t a former #1 pick, we might not hear as much about this crank , but don’t be surprised if more junk surfaces.
New Orleans 117, Orlando 123:Much-maligned Vince Carter erupted for 48 points and the Magic rallied from 17 down to beat the Chris Paul-less Hornets. It’s a big week for the Magic, who have a day off before traveling to Chicago and Cleveland for back-to-backs heading into the All-Star break. The Magic are six games behind the Cavs for the 1st seed in the East. Darren Collison, the UCLA rookie filling in for CP3, had 27-9 with four steals for his third straight pretty good game. Much too early to tell if he could be the team’s next point guard should the financially-strapped franchise have to trade Paul. Read the rest of this entry »
“Sumo’s enfant terrible Asashoryu, one of the sport’s most successful wrestlers despite a career dogged by scandal and controversy, has quit amid claims that he drunkenly attacked a man outside a Tokyo nightclub.” [Independent] Read the rest of this entry »
NBA Ratings: Overall, ratings on TNT are up. Regionally though, some numbers are surprising. Teams like the Lakers (197k), Cavaliers (130k) and Celtics (83k) are drawing good numbers. But what is the deal with nobody watching the Oklahoma City Thunder (12k)? The Bobcats, another team on the rise, is also not a good TV draw in Charlotte (10k - although that number is up significantly from last season). The numbers for all teams can be found here (subscribers only); if you need to know a specific team, ask in the comments and we'll post. [Sports Business Journal] (41)
Orlando 96, Boston 89: The Celtics imploded in the third quarter, barely scoring more points (11) than committing turnovers (eight). An 11-point lead turned into a 14-point deficit. The Celtics lost for the ninth time in 21 games, a slide that has virtually eliminated any hope of the top seed in the East. At this point, the creaky Celtics will be fighting for home court in the playoffs. Boston is 3-9 this season against the eight teams with the best records in the league. The Magic made 11 three-pointers. Read the rest of this entry »
Magic vs. Celtics on ABC at 2:30 - Other than bowling on ESPN, there's not much by way of sports on today. Unless of course, you count the Puppy Bowl! Last night LeBron James went for a cool 23 in the first quarter, 35 at the half and 47 for the game. He also had 8 rebounds, 8 assists and 5 steals. (And 5 turnovers! Fraud!)
For some reason, Shane Battier has decided to grow a mustache. Yahoo! appears to have the first high-quality image of the facial hair. The Blowtorch had a lower-quality picture a few days back, but we decided to ignore the original until further proof surfaced. Blurry photographs have fooled people in the past. Rumors that Battier had to grow the mustache as the result of a gambling debt owed to The Sports Hernia are unconfirmed.
Derrick Rose’s ankle is obviously healed. Seems like every single night he’s got a highlight dunk now. Last night against the Hawks, he had two. Unfortunately, highlights don’t make wins. All-Star snub Josh Smith went for 18, 14 and 10 as the Hawks won 91-81. Read the rest of this entry »
