Lindsey Vonn = Humanized by Sports Illustrated

Olympics 49 Comments »

vonn-si-cover_feb-8-2010Lindsey Vonn was featured on this week’s cover of Sports Illustrated. As you can see from the photograph, she is simulating downhill skiing. Since she is sans helmet and smiling at the camera, someone decided she was being sexualized. That someone was Dr. Nicole M. LaVoi. Her original post was reposted on Women Talk Sports.

Over the last 60 years researchers have shown that about 4% of all SI covers have portrayed women.

When females are featured on the cover of SI, they are more likely than not to be in sexualized poses and not in action–and the most recent Vonn cover is no exception Read the rest of this entry »

The Journey Wasn’t Peaceful: Jamaican Bobsled Team Fails to Qualify for Vancouver

Movies, Olympics 13 Comments »
Unfortunately for fans, and segment producers at NBC, the Jamaican bobsled team did not qualify for the 2010 Winter Olympics.
“We’ve been in battles for many, many years,” Chris Stokes, a founding member of the Jamaican bobsled team more than 20 years ago, told The AP in a phone interview. “This is one more. But it’s disappointing, no question about that. The guys worked really hard and did well. Not qualifying, it’s by no means a failure. It’s a step going forward.”
Former U.S. bobsled pilot Todd Hayes, will coach the team for the 2014 games in Sochi.  A recent crash forced him to retire.  Sounds like a movie plot…

Peru's 1st Winter Olympian: Roberto Carcelen met his wife online, they chatted 5 hours a day every day and eventually he moved to Seattle to be with her. She got him into cross-country skiing. This is just like You've Got Mail, but with skis. He just started skiing at the age of 34. Too bad the Olympics don't come with a cash prize. (Seattle Times) (6)
Olympic Aesthetics: One thing that can throw off a Winter Olympics?  No snow.  Unseasonably warm Vancouver temperatures have melted much of the base at the planned ski and snowboard runs.  They are having to truck snow in and prop it up with hay and wood “to optimize TV shots.” (The Canadian Press) (32)
