“success” meaning fame or “success” meaning money?

i hope i don’t start a race flamewar. i mean, i’m about as whitebread/midwest/fiscal conservative/floridian transplant as they get.

people read si (more importantly si.com) for opinion pieces, not so much the stories. i mean, you can get stories anywhere. but the more writers you get from different backgrounds, the more perspectives from different prisms of life you get.

as much as we all would like life to be, it isn’t just black and white. and yeah, si could use a latino voice or two too.

and, re: the whitlock column about race and the nfl that TBL linked in another post today, i promise you a white writer would never touch that for fear of it being his last story written for money.

and different stories from different backgrounds also brings about debate. unlike the lame, tired scripted arguments you can find on bspn all day long, good, rational well-thought debates using premises from different views are healthy if not enlightening and interesting.

i think what patrick is doing is smart. it’s not unlike what a savvy investor does: he diversifies his portfolio. he doesn’t put all his eggs in one basket.

if patrick’s radio show fails, he still has is SI gig, his blog, his deal with nbc (you just know that is coming). it’s a smart, safe move. i don’t look upon this as bold, just common sense.

now my kvetching. i think mike tirico is light years better on the radio than patrick, who always bored me with his subjects, his buddy-buddy regular guests (will reilly bring patrick to the next lsu game) and his smarmy frat-boy attitude,.

patrick never, ever tried to push the envelope (tirico already has), never tried to be daring… he was just a bore. it’s pretty bad when your subordinates were more interesting than you are on the radio.

patrick was a less obnoxious version of a jocksniffer (chris berman being the obnoxious version).

maybe it’s just me, but i don’t know of anyone that said, as some have about stern, rome, etc, that if they missed dan patrick’s show it seemed their day was incomplete.

patrick got lucky and rode the coatails of olberman. he noticed that olberman because a success outside of the clutches of the disney mice. but olberman, hate him or love him, has a personality. in some ways he’s a lightning rod and often that’s what works.

patrick was, for all intents and purposes, was olberman’s straight man.

i think in three or four years patrick will be working for nbc fulltime doing golf and the olympics.
