agree completley with patrick.. morgan is a talentless piece of crap.. i love van gundy, he makes good points, and hubie brown while long-winded is also very informative. not to mention they are along side the best play by play man in the business, mike breen..

I don’t care what anyone says, Jeff Van Gundy is a great analyst. He’s kind of annoying, but he always comes through with one or two points that make you respect his opinion. His and Mark Jackson’s takes on Dick Bavetta early in the game were classic… and the ESPN commercial with Van Gundy and Jackson is great as well.

I’d take Van Gundy and Jackson along with Jon Miller over Joe Morgan for Sunday Night Baseball any day of the week.

All I’m asking Nick is for rebounds to be classified as “possession saving” or “pedestrian” …therefore, we would know EXACTLY who the best rebounders are without wondering who received the most gimmies. You wouldn’t want that information? I know in the past I’ve talked about “boxing out” – and wanting to know who actually does it. But to be honest, that would be more important in college basketball – since athleticism in the NBA allows players to just go get the ball and give up good rebounding position.

There’s a reason players like Rafer Alston and Daniel Gibson aren’t on the low block when players shoot FTs. It’s because they’re not good enough rebounders to secure FT misses. The Kobe offensive rebound over Brandon Bass that you praised should tell you how important it is to have players on the low block who can box out and grab rebounds. The fact that Z/Lebron/any tall guy gets those rebounds is because they’re a good rebounder and have enough of their coach’s trust (coaches do know everything) to be put in those spots.

Actually pointofattack, he must have been stealing out of my bag of hacky criticisms. I’ve actually made that point…not necessarily about how not counting them – just that the rebound total can be completely misleading. Guys can get 5 rebounds a night just based on the low block.

I’d like a rebounding stat characterizing how many rebounds legitimately saved or added a possession. If someone takes a shot and it falls into my hands, I really didn’t do anything to preserve the possession, but if I went up in traffic and secured a board, I’d like that to be some sort of statistic.

The statistics we have in basketball just don’t tell much of a story sometimes.
