Agree with the412’s points.

Also, enough about the access. To me it’s all about accountability and professionalism. As tired and cliched as you guys seem to think it sounds, it’s dead on. 90% of the blogs out there are garbage (partly because all they do is links/chicks/comment on other stories) but mostly because there is no professional standard to adhere to. At least when I’m reading someone from SI or ESPN, I know that he has his name/reputation/job on the line with everything he writes. In short, he has to answer to somebody. Now, his writing/opinion can be just as bad or worse than Joe Bloggers’, but at least I have that assurance.

This is why TBL is the only blog I visit. He has a journalism background and was a professional in the field and you can easily tell.

Let’s face it. You don’t see jounalists showing a picture of scantily clad women to lead in with their opening headline (aka Morning Roundup). Then, instead of commenting on the stories, most of us describe all the naughty things we would do to the women. and discuss whether she is hot or not.

I’m not knocking TBL for this. This is what us commenters enjoy with our morning Mountain Dew (or coffee for you oldheads).

But 412, no one cares about those blogs. Of course there’s crap out there, but judging all blogs by the lowest common denominator would be homologous (thats right Bob, I can use big words too) to judging all newspapers by the Altoona Mirror. There are far more horrible small town newspapers than NYTimes out there, but we don’t marginalize the Times simply because a large number of similar offerings provide little value to the average person.

My two cents: part of what Costas says is true (many bloggers out there aren’t adding anything to the conversation other than their attempt at sardonic, often pointless analysis), part of what he says sounds like someone who refuses to let go of the old establishment.

ill admit it, i didnt read the article, i just read the quote TBL blocked…

i agree there is a lot of pointless blogs out there, but at the same time, for every major sport, there are great, informative blogs. if youre a golfer, theres geoffshackelford.com thats just as informative as anything on golfdigest.com or golf.com (SI). id rather read freedarko than anything that Bucher or Stein write for the WWL and Florio at PFT is way more connected than Len Pasquerelli or Sal Pal.

no, but sports teams do have PR depts where they can screen blog applicants and see whos on the up and up. if orson at EDSBS was given access to UF and could report shit from inside places we dont usually hear about, that’d be great, especially with as talented a writer as he is.

i think most teams just are too anal about what they want being aired, which is why blogs dont get the access MSM does. but to say that a blogger is incapable of delivering great info is 100%, pure, grade A bullflop. and there are numerous high-profile media members who have said that, which sucks.

its an old debate tho, no need to rehash.

I will say this…I read the blogs that don’t put out as much mindless tripe…as spencer says the cream rises to the top…I go to the blogs that follow my teams closely without getting insane…I come here because its a mix of a lot of things I like and some I don’t but then get to comment my displeasure on…but look at TV…there is mindless tripe on most of the sports shows on TV…please and even the “respected shows I have to watch a guy like Anthony Amey butcher the English language on a “news” program…I go to newspapers and have to read the Wallace Matthews and the Mike Lupicas of the worlds write inflammatory garbage with no journalistic point to it…there is tons of garbage in all media…some people are garbage pickers and some are not…but for Bob to act like he is above it is shit…he spent a period intermission during the NHL game in Buffalo taking about getting into a fight with a minor league hockey player 30 years ago…way to promote yourself and not the sport…it was tripe just like the blogs you despise
