im sorry, but i played basebally for most of my life too and picked up golf when i was 19 (and have busted my ass to get down to a 5 handicap). hitting a baseball WELL is remarkably easier than hitting a golf ball WELL.

in baseball, youre swinging at a much larger object using a tool with a much larger sweet spot. sure it’s curving and sinking and everything, and that’s a reasonable retort, but you have a much wider area to hit it in. and as long as you hit it in play, it doesnt matter where you hit it.

golf is a shitload more precise. even if you hit the ball a fraction of an inch off of center, the ball is going to move. if your wrists are left wide open, youre going to hit it as far right as you hit it long. there’s such a small window for success and so many variables that impact where you hit it, it forces precision where basebally is more of a guess.

you make one technical error in golf and youre throwing strokes on your card. in baseball, you don’t worry about wind direction, or undulation in the ground where your target is. youre not worried about a giant bunker in front of your target area. you don’t have to worry about spin or distance control.

im not saying it’s easy to hit a baseball, because id still be playing if it was, but hitting and controlling a golf ball is something on a totally different level.

I didn’t check the Guardian link but I don’t believe it. I was watching the coverage live at work and all the mic’s were up. Tiger swung, instantly said, ” Not in my swing!!!….God Dammitt!!” That’s it. The mic’s stayed up and nothing else was said. They showed real time replays as well. You could see and hear Tiger putting his club away.

His caddie Steve Williams did not even look up from the time Tiger hit the bad shot to the time Tiger put his club in the bag…..the fact that Stevie didn’t acknowledge it is the shocking part to me.

He may have said something walking to the green but I am calling bullshit on this story.

i hate this guy more and more reading stories like this, and actually reinforces my concept that golfers are f’ing pussies.

to paraphrase norman chad on soccer, i have only two opinions on golf: 1) it shouldn’t be played; 2) it shouldn’t be watched.

how is it that pujols or a-rod can hit a screaming fastball (at 90+ mph) or a nasty hook (at 80+ mph) with a stadium full of people screaming at the top of their lungs but pussy golfers have to have complete and total silence to hit a stationary target???

and that’s not even counting guys hitting free throws in a tight game or even place kickers in football.

if rumeal robinson can sink two free throws to win a national championship game, puss boy woods and his steroid-juiced arms can hit a stationary target despite the click of a camera.

a friggin camera!

spencer – You said hitting a golf ball is harder than hitting a baseball. My point was that anyone can hit a golf ball. Not everyone is Tiger, obviously. But, anyone can hit a golf ball. You were the same guy who said a week or two ago that you could pull guys off a muni course that would beat John Daly. Not everyone can hit a baseball. Try batting against even a high school pitcher and you’ll see just how difficult it is to even touch the ball, let alone put the ball in play.

None of this is to denigrate the talent of Tiger, who I believe is probably one of the top five athletes of my lifetime.

Ive been playing golf for years, and hitting the ball is no problem; getting it to go where I want it is the issue.
I have always believed that hitting a baseball is the hardest thing to do in sports.
