@atl – I think my point was more than Seinfeld/Simpsons are kind of like the Dave Kingman of TV shows. When they get a hold of one, it’s beautiful stuff. But the consistency was gone for Seinfield, and The Simpsons can be hit or miss as well.

@Nick – I’ve found that the first two years of Seinfeld blow since they are just horribly dated. The fashion, technology, everything. Almost unwatchable, but maybe they’ll get better over time.

@412–I do think they were all roughly equal. I guess where my disdain for this comes from is that Seinfeld and Simpsons fans often say the same thing. I can’t remember how many times I’ve heard “The Simpsons has really lost some mph off its fastball.” I think the writing is just as funny and inventive as it’s always been, but the show has been on the air for almost 20 years.

I thought the first 2 seasons were almost draconian in their suckdickitude. For sure, I prefer it over most sitcome fare, but I hate the first two seasons, compared to the greatness of the rest.

atl – I don’t think it’s a matter of anyone thinking they’re “edgy” so much as people just expressing a view–commonly held among Seinfeld fans–that the last few seasons were subpar. Are you of the opinion that all of the roughly 180 shows were equal in their merits?

The definitive opinions on here kill me. Seinfeld was still a juggernaut in the last three years. In addition to Frogger, Puerto Rico Day, etc, there was also the Peterman reality tour and other great ones. What is the constant fascination with people thinking they’re “edgy” if they like the old version of something better? I don’t get this.
