You're talking about one of the cheapest sports to fund...the facilities are already in place and dirt cheap to begin with, the team is pretty damn small, and most of the players already buy their own equipment. Personally, I think it's more impactful/important/beneficial to throw yourself wholly into a local charity/cause than it is to try and donate a little bit to the huge organizations (United Way/Red Cross/etc.). I don't donate much to the bigger causes, but I'm a big supporter of local youth athletic leagues. The altruism article is an interesting read.
