People have got to let go of the “how can you get talent to Iowa” argument. That is his job people. He is paid $3.03 MILLION each year to get talent. If he cannot do so then Iowa should pay someone have as much and get the same result.

Then Ferentz stopped recruiting. Also, how do you recruit against Michigan, Ohio State and Penn State. Now, add Notre Dame and Illinois in the picture and it’s tough picking.

more important, how do you recruit to iowa? at least michigan, ohio state, penn state, notre dame and illinois, if they are not located in picturesque areas (penn state) they are located close to major cities (close = two hours away).

iowa city is close to… the quad cities.

Glad you left Mozzatta! Get a clue. Hope you moved to Ohio. Really, there is a bigger fan base for football than wrestling? I’m shocked. There’s also a bigger fan base for Iowa basketball. The only claim wrestling has is that it’s what their best at.

PurdueMatt is right, it’s just not realistic to expect 10 wins every year. It happened a couple times, and the cycle is coming back around where it will again. When was the last time a major conference football team had open tryouts for RB mid-season? That’s what Iowa had to do in 2006. Quarterback play has been erratic as well. That being said, Ferentz has turned out quite a bit of NFL talent, so it’s obvious the talent is there. It just hasn’t hit all at the same time.

It’s not that they think they always have the best team, it’s that the Hawks are all Iowa has. And no Cyclones, Iowa State doesn’t count.

In Iowa, there are 2 sports. Hawkeye football and Hawkeye wrestling. People in Iowa expect a Big 10 championship every year. Every year they think their Hawks are the greatest team in the world. Iowa is big in wrestling, but football has a bigger fan base. Iowa finished in the Top 10 three consecutive years. Then Ferentz stopped recruiting. Also, how do you recruit against Michigan, Ohio State and Penn State. Now, add Notre Dame and Illinois in the picture and it’s tough picking.

Did he deserve the contract, yes. Does he now? No. The Hawks had 3 great years, people jumped on the bandwagon and now they are just realizing they aren’t that good. I lived there for 6 years and had such a blast rooting against them. Go to Hawkeyenation.com and you can see how much Black & Gold kool-aid they drink. Probably the stupidest fans in the Big 10.

he’s the best O-line coach in college football. say what you will, the Iowa O-line is usually top notch, insanely well coached and runs some of the most complex blocking assignments in college football.

then again, that’s worthless without talent (just don’t tell Charlie Weis).

I don’t think there was enough Big Ten bashing in that post.

He hasn’t earned his pay the last 3 years, that’s for sure. But at a school like Iowa, you can’t expect 10 wins every year. I think he earned his pay during the 2002-2004 seasons and a certain amount of patience and good will accompanies that at a place like Iowa.

how did this become a big 10 – SEC debate? Tyduffy, settle down. Florida got thumped but I doubt it had anything to do with intelligence or lack thereof. Also, Ferentz is responsible for getting talent to Iowa. So the excuse of not enough talent doesn’t hold water. And everyone gas injuries so that is another bogus excuse.

Ferentz was the hottest commodity in coaching when he signed his contract. He had NFL teams coming after him. He hasn’t had a great last few years, but he’s still generally accepted as doing the most with the least amount of incoming talent. It’s hard to get big time recruits to go to Iowa. They have also had a lot of injuries.

Also, Michigan (my alma-mater) bitch-slapped Tebow in their bowl game last year. No SEC team was intelligent enough to figure out to just blitz him constantly to take away the run and force him to make quick throws.

So Arkansas fans are supposed to be happy and have patience with a mediocre coach who has a decent year once every 4 or 5 years? Really? I am not naive enough to think that we will be a national title contender year in and year out, but to say that we didn’t have patience with a coach that had the longest tenure in a BCS conference without going to a BCS bowl is a bit of a reach. And it’s not like we got rid of a shitty coach and got a even shittier one to replace him, we made a definite step up IMO.
