And Spence, haven’t heard A.J. publicly push for surgery myself. I’ve only heard that it’s Shawne’s choice to do what he does. They have a policy to not discuss injuries and let the players and agents sort it out.

@Sterlin: I guess I’d better use colored fonts for my sarcasm. Taking the field as your ‘bet’ is a pretty safe bet in any situation, hence me betting on the sun for tomorrow…maybe the sun only comes out in San Diego, who knew?

And @ Sean Jean: Taking the field against the Chargers for best team in the AFC is a bold prediction. I ‘betcha’ the sun comes up tomorrow too. We all saw what happened to the ‘best’ team in the AFC in the Super Bowl last year anyway, just cause you may be the best, doesn’t mean you win by default.

CJ…i heard that AJ Smith actually wanted Merriman to have the surgery. any truth to that? i think Alex Marvez said something to that effect on Fox Sports Radio’s the Drive hosted by Chris Meyers and Sean Farnham.

@August West: Yeah, it could be posturing, but around these parts A.J. is widely considered being half Corleone and half John Wayne (Any Nick Canepa column will beat you over the head with that) and is rather thick in the skull. It wouldn’t surprise me in the slightest to see him laugh maniacally as Merriman’s knee blows like the death star and he gets another opportunity to play draft genius and save some scratch…I wouldn’t be at all surprised to see him dole out a huge number to the kid either…

Hey, a discussion I can get involved with… I think the prevailing thought is that Stephen Cooper is out for the first four games on suspension, or ‘unpaid leave’ for ‘recreational’ drug usage. I think Merriman feels he needs to be out there during that period of time. I wouldn’t be surprised to see him shut it down after Coop returns.

The recovery time for the knee post surgery is 6 months (best case), 9 months (worst case) so, even if he is productive for most of the season, or blows it out right away, he should be ready to go for ‘09 and that’s the kid’s contract year so you know he’ll make himself ready…

As far as it being career threatening, docs are saying that was blown slightly out of proportion and he’d have to severely damage the joint to make that a realistic possibility, and even so, recovery from joint damage is still very possible and probable.

@August West: My first thought was to circle the Donkey’s games on the schedule for exactly that reason…

All that being said, it’s not the ’smartest’ decision to make, but he’s into it so let him go hell fire all over the place. They are a better team with him on the field, there is no arguing that. There are indications that A.J. may not resign him anyway…(yesterday’s U.T. can’t find link)

But what the hell do I know, I only live in that town, and you know, actually follow the team…
