This is exactly my point though. She’s been at this for what, 3 or 4 years? Cut her some slack, Lauer is a professional, doing this for as long as she’s been alive, you’re right, and even he makes mistakes. That’s all I was saying.

1) how many football fans know walsh “mentored” singletary outside the few thousand who may have read that story?

2) many nfl fans remember singletary playing for the bears — the niners’ bitter rivals — in the 80s.

3) in general sports venacular, “mentor” = coach.

4) of course, a professional broadcaster would have prefaced that quesiton with, “mike, we know bill walsh meant a lot to you as an assistant with the niners… ” that simple sentence would have greatly softened the blow of her mistake. given her history, she isn’t exactly professional though is she? and this isn’t counting the fact she didn’t even know what she said was wrong.

5) to compare her mistake with lauer is laughable at best, and why stop there, why not throw in peter jennings or tom brokaw or tim russert? lauer has how many years/decades of solid top-notch work on his resume. lauer had done countless in-depth interviews with the world’s leaders. of course anyone working in the industry that long will have some screwups.
