Maggs: I agree with you (surprise!) about people’s attitudes today. A quick story: My wife is an Attorney, and we were at a wedding reception with about 100 lawyers in the room. A guy starts choking on his rubber chicken, and nobody would help him. They didn’t want to get sued if the guy died. You could hear a pin drop in the room, except for the guy choking. I went over (I’m not a lawyer) and helped the guy, and people looked at me like I was crazy. I think people will “circle the wagons” around their own lives, and, in limited circumstances, extend a helping hand to those who need it. I wouldn’t expect widespread handouts except from the government.

I know what you were trying to say. I still don’t agree that the good old days of helping your neighboor are still around today. i never knew my neighboors growing up, I don’t say hello to people I don’t know when I walk down the street. THAT fear has not been there forever as you say. Back when the Great Depression happened people felt as though they should band together, now people don’t really give a shit about what happens to somebody else. Klosterman had a piece about this in GQ once. He went to a movie and a dude had a seizure… nobody helped him, nobody even ran for help. They all sat there stunned. I think the sentiment that people are willing to help other people for no incentive is growing old hat and I truly think that is very sad.

@maggs – a hithchiker and un-invited guest is not what I was thinking of. I was thinking more along the lines of neighbors, friends, co-workers, etc. Helping out your neighbor is a bit different than picking up a guy on the highway to bring home for dinner. The type of fear you are speaking of has been around forever. What I was trying to get across was that the Nation as a whole is much more banded than people give it credit.
