World Series Game 6: Andy, Pedro, Wickman, Howe

Baseball 559 Comments »

world-series-yanks-philliesCould Game 6 of the World Series be setup any better for Fox? Facing elimination, the Phillies are sending Pedro Martinez, a Yankee nemesis who somehow doubles as endearing, to the mound to face off against beloved homegrown Yankee, Andy Pettitte. chase-utley-wife-does-tvChase Utley's Wife: The possible MVP of the World Series has a very telegenic wife, and so Access Hollywood visited her in Philly. She says about dating Utley ... "It was not love at first sight ... he was a mess. A big mess." Women love to say that about men they eventually marry. Why is that? Because they want to feel like they somehow changed or improved the guy? We digress. Chase and his wife, Jennifer, met at UCLA. The man responsible for their first encounter? None other than Freddie Mitchell (aka Fred Ex), the former wide receiver who was an epic bust in Philly. [700 Level via Hot Clicks, Philadelphia Magazine] (24)

Trading Josh Beckett Would Be Silly

Baseball 47 Comments »

Dave D’Onofrio of the Concord Monitor believes the Yankees were demonstrably better than the Red Sox this season (ignore the run differential).  To close that gap, he argues the Red Sox should trade Josh Beckett.  As is customary for such blanket assertions, he leaves the salient questions unanswered, to whom and for what in return?

Brett Favre, Ratings Bonanza: Brett Favre returning to Lambeau Sunday resulted in incredible ratings for FOX - 17.4 rating and 29.8 million viewers. It is estimated that 39 million were watching around 7 pm. That easily bested anything the World Series has done so far (evrn though the World Series numbers have been vastly improved over last year). Without competition from the NFL Sunday night, game four of the World Series generated a 13.5 rating and 22.8 million viewers. Game five's numbers were impressive, too. Favre's return to Green Bay wasn't the best regular season game in FOX history, though - that honor belongs to San Francisco vs. Dallas in 1995 (32.1 million viewers). In that game, the 49ers rolled behind ... Elvis Grbac, 38-20. [USA Today, Media Life Magazine] (28)

BCS Bowl Games Predictions: Uninteresting Unbeatens and Penn State vs. Notre Dame

College Football 193 Comments »

colt-mccoy-texas-girlfriend-hot-longhorns-fansOn a lazy Wednesday, how about some navel-gazing BCS projections?

Florida/Alabama (SEC champ) vs. Texas (Big 12 champ) – 100% sure it’ll involve two of these three teams.
Oregon (Pac-10 champ) vs. Iowa (Big 10 champ) – Practically written in stone.
Notre Dame (at-large) vs. Penn State (at-large) – BCS would be so lucky to get a matchup like this. Boffo ratings. Read the rest of this entry »

Media Musings: Multiple sources tell The Big Lead that Gordon Edes, a baseball writer at Yahoo Sports, is leaving for ESPNBoston.com upon completion of the World Series. Presumably, Edes will cover the Red Sox, which was his primary focus for many years at the Boston Globe. We emailed Edes about the move and all he would say is that he's under contract at Yahoo and covering the World Series. He didn't elaborate. (104)

Brad Childress on Brett Favre’s Groin

Kind of Gay, Music, NFL 37 Comments »

brett-favre-brad-childress-groin “I was standing behind him and I saw him kinda reach for it … reach for his groin … and … you know … hold it and … rub it … that’s what I think I witnessed. It twinged a bit on him.” [Star Tribune]

carrie-underwood-dating-mike-fisher-hockey-playerMike Fisher and Carrie Underwood: "Thank you #12. You are the most amazing addition to my life! You are such a wonderful person and have had such an amazing hand in the building of this album and in the growth of me as a person. I love you so much! You make my life better in every way! I thank God for you every day." The former American Idol contestant/girlfriend of Tony Romo wrote that on the linear notes of her recent album. Fisher is on the Ottawa Senators. He's having a considerably better 2009 than Hilary Duff's boyfriend, Mike Comrie, who was sidelined recently with the flu. [People] (18)

Thoughts on 30 for 30: Without Bias

College Basketball, ESPN, Movies, NBA Draft 96 Comments »

It’s hard to find a more classic tragedy than Len Bias.  He was a Maryland basketball phenom, the #2 overall draft pick and the extender of the Celtics dynasty.  He achieved his greatest dream.  He had it ripped away in a dreadful night of stupidity, as an overdose of cocaine ended his life.

Tubby Smith and Minnesota: The Golden Gophers appear to be on the rise - they reached the NCAA tournament last year for the first time since 2005 - and Tubby Smith is bringing in high-profile recruits to the program. Problem: They keep getting in trouble. JUCO transfer Trevor Mbakwe, who is supposedly a force, won't play until his December court case (assault) is complete. Royce White, a freshman who was Minnesota's Mr. Basketball last year, was arrested Oct. 13 for shoplifting and fifth-degree assault at Macy's in the Mall of America. Did a 6-foot-8 guy think he could steal $100 worth of merch and get away with it? Assuming these two guys are playing by Jan. 1, the Gophers - who return all their best talent from last year - should still be looking at about 24-25 regular season wins (the out-of-conference schedule is a joke) and another NCAA berth.
