Is There a QB that Terrell Owens Can Get Along With?
NFL December 12th. 2008, 11:00am
Has anyone seen ESPN’s Ed Werder this morning? After his scathing reporting last night – it was the first time in months years we were transfixed to the 6 pm Sportscenter- two things are obvious: 1) He didn’t sleep a wink, 2) He rigged the windows in his house with rope, like the cop in Cape Fear, while sitting in a chair with a double barrel shotgun in his lap.
No need to go through the gory details, as they’re everywhere and you’ve probably committed them to memory now, but …
1) Bye, TO. The drama queen had a nice run with the team. Now, he can go make life hell for another QB. He can go and try to break apart another franchise. Teams will no longer double Owens, and their focus will turn to Witten, which means more drops for Crayton, hopefully more burn for Miles Austin, and definitely a 1,000 yard season for Roy Williams. Life will go on, expectations will be lower.
2) As a commenter pointed out last night, this whole “Romo is a choker” thing is a joke. You want to say he’s struggled in December and January, fine. The stats back it up. He’s also been in the league three years. Guess who else started their career 0-2 in the playoffs. Eli Manning. Lost in the first round in 05 and 06, and he was a No. 1 pick. Man, too bad the Giants never got rid of that bum! John Elway. Lost in the first round in 84 and 85, and he was a No. 1 pick. Ditto!
3) ESPN showed a great stat last night: Romo has thrown to Owens 87 times this season, and Witten 80. Not 100 percent certain, but there was another stat flashed that said Owens has been throw to more times in the last three years than Witten. Where’s the beef?
4) We mostly enjoy the candor of Owens. Thought the sit-ups thing is his driveway was one of the funniest interview scenes in the history of interviews. But we’re done with the guy. He’s Hall of Fame-bound and in his prime, he was one of the best in the league (but never better than Randy Moss). He’s now gone to three different teams and each time raised hell and ruined a good thing. Have the teams been successful party due to him? Definitely. So why does he always seem to be in the middle of things?

Can I get a name-check?
Best part of Werder’s report:
December 12th, 2008 at 11:06 am
But I though Romo was his teammate.
December 12th, 2008 at 11:10 am
he’s a choker until he wins something…isn’t that the rule?
December 12th, 2008 at 11:10 am
Answer: Himself

yet another friggin soap opera with the cowgirls. yawn. next.

seriously?
name me a DC who won’t ALWAYS have safety help over TO and i’ll show you a DC who’ll find himself on the unemployment line at season’s end.

Steve Spagnuolo.

Cape Fear is a great movie
December 12th, 2008 at 11:18 am
John Elway started 0-2!? Holy shit! That’s the best evidence I’ve seen yet to indicate Romo will win Super Bowls.

Here are 2 things that directly contradict each other. These two things prove my point.
December 12th, 2008 at 11:23 am
also, lets remember that Eli’s first postseason game, the team was ravaged by injuries. the second one, he actually played quite well, but they were also the underdogs.
Romo’s teams were healthy and the favorites both times. sounds like a choke to me.
December 12th, 2008 at 11:23 am
They’ve all been successful with him except the Cowboys, they havent made it out of the Wild Card rd of the playoffs.
/Eagles fan LOVING this

CRM, just answer this: did you, as a Giants fan, consider Eli Manning a “choker” up until the start of the playoffs last season? Yes or no.
December 12th, 2008 at 11:27 am
10/18, 113 yards, 0 TD, 3 picks and no offensive points, at home, and you’re playing the injury card?
December 12th, 2008 at 11:28 am
CRM is no Giants fan. The shade of blue on their unis is way too masculine.
December 12th, 2008 at 11:28 am
Also, Eli Manning’s Super Bowl win has a lot more to do with a great defense, a solid running game and a lucky catch than Eli Manning.
December 12th, 2008 at 11:28 am
oh yeah, he did play bad in that game. but Tiki said it was the coaches fault.
December 12th, 2008 at 11:29 am
Romo hasn’t been in the league for 3 years, he’s been in the league for 6 years. he continually gets the benefit of the doubt because he wasn’t ready to play early in his career. name me another QB that gets the run Romo does with 0 playoff wins after his 5th year in the league.
December 12th, 2008 at 11:29 am
Mike, I’m not a Giants fan.
December 12th, 2008 at 11:29 am
CRM is fired up this morning.
December 12th, 2008 at 11:30 am
I want to tattoo that on the heads of all my friends who like the Giants
December 12th, 2008 at 11:30 am
What? Sorry, thought you were. Jets?
Where have I been?
December 12th, 2008 at 11:32 am
@Mike-everyone talked about the inconsistency with Eli up until the playoffs last year, so kinda hard to call him a choker in that regards. Romo is always compared to Favre (the Super Bowl winning Favre, not the 6 turnovers in 1 playoff game Favre).
December 12th, 2008 at 11:32 am
Don’t forget Asante Samuel’s easy INT drop!
December 12th, 2008 at 11:35 am
CRM is a Dolphins fan.
December 12th, 2008 at 11:36 am
They are the same person. He didn’t magically stop throwing interceptions when he won the Super Bowl
December 12th, 2008 at 11:37 am
So you can only be a choker if the media thinks you’re awesome? I’m just having a tough time following the guidelines. Eli was the No. 1 overall pick. Doesn’t that alone qualify him?
I’m just saying, be consistent. If you want to call Romo a choker, fine. Then so were Elway + Eli before they won their playoff games.
December 12th, 2008 at 11:37 am
Yeah, because leading a team down the field in the 2 minute drill has nothing to do with the QB. How did that workout for Romo in the NFC Title game?
December 12th, 2008 at 11:37 am
That’s Owens being Owens. This is his 3rd year in Dallas. Didn’t everyone predict this?
BTW, if this was happening in Minnesota, no one would give a damn.
December 12th, 2008 at 11:39 am
how can you lump elway in with romo and eli? elway had half the supporting cast those guys did and came through in the end in numerous games. just because he got shelled in the SB doesn’t mean that he wasn’t tits in the playoffs.
/trying vigorously to block memories of the drive
December 12th, 2008 at 11:39 am
i think the word choke gets tossed around too much. just to play pro sports is quite an accomplishment.
December 12th, 2008 at 11:40 am
I know. but when Romo has a bad game, the comparisons stop. only when he is on fire and creating on his own for a positive play does anyone say that he looks like Favre.
@Mike-let’s stop dwelling on the past, lets look at the here and now. Eli and Elway=Super Bowl MVPs and Champions. Romo=Choker.
December 12th, 2008 at 11:42 am
i think the word choke gets tossed around too much.
Choke. Fraud. It’s all good hyperbole!
December 12th, 2008 at 11:46 am
Mike, I assume you’ve stopped talking to me because I’ve never said Eli Manning was some elite quarterback who is worthy of praise.
December 12th, 2008 at 11:48 am
the reason things like choke and fraud are thrown around so much is because our society, especially sports, has become a place where schadenfreude runs rampant.
Not that thats a bad thing…COWBOYS ARE IMPLODING!!!!!
December 12th, 2008 at 11:48 am
All I asked was if you considered him a choker prior to last year’s playoff run.
December 12th, 2008 at 11:51 am
If you lose, you’re a choker.
If you win, you’re a fluke artist.
If you’re Oden, you get a free pass.

+1 clown
December 12th, 2008 at 11:55 am
no.
December 12th, 2008 at 11:56 am
I look at Eli Manning the exact same way I looked at him before. And when he throws 3 picks in the NFC Championship this year, I’ll still look at him exactly the same. He’s a quarterback whose success rides on the ability of his offensive line to protect him, a good running game and a good defense.
December 12th, 2008 at 12:22 pm
I think Eli is a good sometimes great quarterback who becomes a average quarterback when his offensive line isn’t able to protect him but you can say the same about just about any other good quarterback in the league.
December 12th, 2008 at 12:30 pm
Isn’t that a little hasty, TBL?
In related news,if the Chargers lose this week, then maybe they’re not for real.
December 12th, 2008 at 12:30 pm
Eli Manning was pretty good in their playoff loss to the Eagles on the road two years ago. 16/27 161 2 tds 1 int and rallying them from 10 down to tie the game with 5 minutes to go. Eagles then used the rest of the clock and kicked a field goal.
As for as choking and what not, what gives Romo that kind of scrutiny is that the last two playoff games have ended on mistakes by him which makes him look a lot worse.
Everyone thinks Owens is the problem, but what have the niners and eagles done without him? I hate the guy but its not like Garcia and McNabb have been awesome without him.
December 12th, 2008 at 1:22 pm
Something that most quarterbacks need.
I’d love to get into the argument how both o and d line are possibly more important than QB but I’d rather not.
December 12th, 2008 at 1:24 pm
How O-line is more important than QB and how d-line is more important than star positions (CB, safety, whatever)
/fixed to read what my mind was thinking.
December 12th, 2008 at 1:29 pm
phat…OL is about as important as QB, hard to say one is more important than the other.
DL, more importantly DT, is the most important position on defense, agreed there.
December 12th, 2008 at 1:31 pm
Go the fuck away Dallas Cowboys. If it ain’t Cowboys, Patriots, Celtics or Lakers, it ain’t news for ESPN!!!!!
December 12th, 2008 at 1:43 pm
Eli’s problem was never about choking. Even in his first two and a half seasons, this was always a guy who ran a two minute drill in either half as well as any QB in the league. I can remember games where he brought the Giants back to tie or take a lead only to have the defense let him down. Eli had to become consistant and have better play calling.
December 12th, 2008 at 1:51 pm
T.O. loved Tim Rattay.
December 12th, 2008 at 2:16 pm
I can’t argue with any sort of statistic (at this moment) that OL is more important but I’ll use some anecdotal evidence… Kerry Collins.
Tennessee has won despite Kerry Collins being a great quarterback because their offensive line can keep pressure off Collins’ back and stuff the ball down the other teams throat when they run. I think this season, the TEN offensive line has been more important to their wins. I also think Joe Flacco, Matt Ryan, and Jake Delhomme are good examples of this.
I am being anecdotal because I’m at work and really should be doing my job but I’m sure statistics will back me up.

December 12th, 2008 at 4:10 pm
I’d like to see T.O. play with a QB who would call him out on his shit. “Yeah, that deep pass in the third quarter was right on – too bad butterfingers dropped another one.”
March 5th, 2009 at 8:00 pm
Yeah, thats counting the balls that Romo throws 10 yards in front and behind Owens.
