It’s Getting Ugly for Ed Werder and ESPN in Dallas (Featuring Intimidation From TO’s Entourage?)
ESPN, Media Gossip/Musings, NFL December 15th. 2008, 1:48pm
So everybody’s had a good laugh about this Ed Werder-Terrell Owens fiasco … everyone, that is, except for Ed Werder. He’s become public enemy No. 1 in Dallas, where the fans blend passionate and crazy into a concoction that falls just short of soccer hooliganism. A source who was at the press conference last night in Dallas – the one where Owens nearly teared up after a question about the fans booing him – notes:
The funny thing (and the scary thing) about all this is that fans have sort of taken T.O. and his bobo Deion’s lead on this one. They’re emboldened by T.O. calling out Ed Werder and as you saw, one guy showed up to heckle Werder at Valley Ranch. As everyone left the field last night, fans in the stands were really saying some ugly things to Werder. And there’s nothing the Cowboys or anyone can really do. It’s like a bunch of citizen journalists have been turned loose and they’re taking things into their own hands.
Even more bizarre is that Owens has a mini-entourage which may include former NBA guard Damon Jones (currently inactive with the Milwaukee Bucks). After the riveting press conference, our source watched as Jones and Owens appeared to intimidate ESPN reporter Matt Mosley:
“I was talking to a player out in the tunnel when I saw T.O. and his entourage approaching ESPN’s Matt Mosley. I recognized Damon Jones (Miami Heat, Cleveland Cavaliers) from T.O’s group. As T.O. walked by, he started hunching his shoulders like he was trying to intimidate Mosley calling him a “chump.” Mosley seemed unsure of what to do and said something, and right then someone shouted, “Stop it!” Everyone turned to see who it was, but it was just a random fan in a Romo jersey who took a picture of Owens. Then Owens and Jones walked away.”
We’ve got emails out to Werder and Mosley, but there’s no response yet.

December 15th, 2008 at 1:51 pm
that’s “heckling.”
December 15th, 2008 at 1:53 pm
Damon Jones: from D-Wade and Bron’s on-court sidekick to T.O.’s off-field lackey. Ha.
December 15th, 2008 at 1:54 pm
i love how Deion Sanders called Ed Werder a liar, and completely disregarded Rich Eisen speaking up for the guy.
December 15th, 2008 at 1:54 pm
So Cowboys fans are crazy…?
December 15th, 2008 at 1:54 pm
werder deserves it…
December 15th, 2008 at 1:55 pm
I’m sorry, delusional sounds accurate.
December 15th, 2008 at 1:56 pm
it’s Dallas, only reason it was overblown like it was. stories like this pop up on other teams all the time. read the local papers. but this was dallas.

not the first time a media personality has been heckled (cheese doodles, anyone?) and it certainly won’t be the last.

TBL used an anonymous source! TBL used an anonymous source!
December 15th, 2008 at 2:06 pm
Nice shirt, asshole.
December 15th, 2008 at 2:06 pm
TBL’s source = Jerry O’Connell
December 15th, 2008 at 2:06 pm
Damon Jones and intimidation shouldn’t be used in the same sentence.
December 15th, 2008 at 2:06 pm
video of the Cowboys fan heckling Ed Werder during a report last week
December 15th, 2008 at 2:09 pm
Faux-hawk alert!
December 15th, 2008 at 2:09 pm
I don’t wanna say Werder and Co. deserve it, but damn, man, some of their reports and shit are just fucking ridiculous. I remember reading the bottom line on Friday and seeing “Owens called Whitten a name (!!!)”, ESPN’s Ed Werder reports.
Still, TO is a selfish fuck.
December 15th, 2008 at 2:10 pm
That was pretty great.
December 15th, 2008 at 2:10 pm
to was booed more than cheered at the game last night. turning on romo was not a good idea.
December 15th, 2008 at 2:11 pm
I for one am tired of citizen journalists.

Why not? He was a lifetime Robin in the NBA. He can a Robin in real life.
As for the Werder bashing, it’s unfair, but it’s the way it is. There’s a reason ESPN put Werder on the Cowboys beat — same as Pedro Gomez was Barry Bonds’ shadow and Sal Paloantonio breaks pane and olio de oliva with Andy Reid. Because they believe that’s where the “big” stories are going to come out from.
December 15th, 2008 at 2:13 pm
ESPN should make Werder cover the Lions.
December 15th, 2008 at 2:15 pm
Werder was doing his job no? ESPN can run with anything but how is Werder in the wrong?
December 15th, 2008 at 2:18 pm

Off subject but is there an over-under on how many cups get chucked at Steve Young tonight after his Philly – Cleveland comment?
I’ll more cups than Browns points.
December 15th, 2008 at 2:20 pm
you sayin’ romo’s an ass-pirate?
December 15th, 2008 at 2:20 pm
Whats the over-under 2 girls and 1 cup thrown at Steve Young

Werder should have a problem with his ESPN editors who didn’t have the balls to say that a player “apparently jealous” of someone else is not a story. They put Werder on the Cowboy beat and he is probably obligated to report what he hears (I mean it seems to be his only job.) But ESPN has to have some integrity and realize that they are news reporters and not news makers.
December 15th, 2008 at 2:21 pm
I liked Reggie Theus. That team played hard and well, considering the dearth of talent.
Any word if Charlie Weis is on the short list to replace him?
December 15th, 2008 at 2:21 pm
Werder was doing his job no? ESPN can run with anything but how is Werder in the wrong?
Sparty is asking himself the same thing.
December 15th, 2008 at 2:22 pm
Me thinks T.O. doth protest too much.
December 15th, 2008 at 2:22 pm
A reliable source tell me he’ll be back at Deering High by the end of the week.
December 15th, 2008 at 2:24 pm
I don’t know if there’s any snow in Philly but I’d love for someone to tag Emmitt with a snowball this evening.
December 15th, 2008 at 2:29 pm
i still enjoy the double standard of an anonymous source being good enough to create a controversy in Dallas, but not good enough to report on a story about brett favre giving packers info to Detroit.
December 15th, 2008 at 2:34 pm
I’d love to pile on, but as I believe it was MikeNYC pointed out last week, ESPN can’t confirm someone else’s anonymous sources.
December 15th, 2008 at 2:44 pm
In other news: the Blackhawks, Ducks and Canucks all won yesterday, the Winter Classic is 17 days away, and hockey players are hot.
/am beyond sick of this T.O.-Werder story

TBL, are you going to discuss Barkley’s comments?
http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=3770769
December 15th, 2008 at 2:48 pm
I don’t think anonymous sources are bad when reporting on coaching/trade reports but when they are used in a tabloid type of “news†reporting you’re going to be opened up to the type of abuse that Wedner is taking. Ultimately it’s ESPN’s decision to run with Wedner’s report and of course they’re going to….this is ESPN we’re talking about.
The worst part was the bullshit little stat trackers on sportscenter about how many times each player was thrown to. ESPN has taken to not reporting the news but creating the news but we already know that’s their business practice.
December 15th, 2008 at 2:50 pm
John- Barkley is telling the truth.
December 15th, 2008 at 3:02 pm
1). Barkley is correct on this one.
2). I wouldn’t think that guy would be able to hang out with TO anymore, since the Joker took him out about a year ago.
December 15th, 2008 at 3:33 pm
Mark Schlabach (also on the link to the Barkley comments) was on Outside the Lines yesterday and said two SEC coaches told him flat out there was no way Turner Gill and the guy from Florida were getting hired at Auburn because they were married to white women.
re: “TO”: Someone should shoot Deion Sanders for being the biggest asshatand apologist for bad behavior the world has ever seen.
December 15th, 2008 at 3:43 pm
John – they went and hired a guy who is 5-19 in 2 years over a guy who just won his conference and has Buffalo in a bowl.
Not saying it’s race. But it’s tough to defend the decision as one based on merit.
December 15th, 2008 at 3:54 pm
Werder should sue TO for slander, just because it would be too ironic: a reporter suing a source for defamation of character. I do think that non-story was in horrible taste on ESPN’s part, and I don’t really have a problem with people calling Werder unprofessional (I was called that once. It sucks, but you get over it). But I could use a laugh, and a Werder vs. TO lawsuit would get the job done.

is Damon Jones sporting a damn faux hawk?
