Charles Barkey’s Ticked Off That Auburn Didn’t Hire Turner Gill
1-liner, College Football, Race December 15th. 2008, 6:00pmCharles Barkley: Really wishes Auburn had hired a black coach. Like Turner Gill. “I think race was the No. 1 factor. You can say it’s not about race, but you can’t compare the two resumes and say [Chizik] deserved the job. Out of all the coaches they interviewed, Chizik probably had the worst resume.” Worse yet, the guy who wrote that piece, Mark Schlabach, said he was told by two SEC coaches that Gill didn’t get the gig because of his white wife. Whitlock must be licking his chops to write about this as if he were sitting down to chow some bbq. Obviously more on this tomorrow. (ESPN, Deadspin)

Oh that Barkley, always trying to keep the white man down. When he has his first heart attack, guess who’s NOT operating on him? All more black coaches will do is raise our taxes even higher.

the whole white wife thing is fucking ridiculous. Also, way to drop the eating bbq reference, you should have said watermelon while you’re at it.

re: white wife.
Bsanders - Who knew Tar Baby was a big-time Auburn booster.
Worse yet, the guy who wrote that piece, Mark Schlabach, said he was told by two SEC coaches that Gill didn’t get the gig because of his white wife.
That’s all recruiting right there. Why would two opposing coaches know the internal goings on of the Auburn coaching search? They don’t, but it does nothing but help them if 5 star recruits think Auburn is racist. Say what you will about Saban and Nutt, but they know how to recruit.
December 15th, 2008 at 6:20 pm
Again…you’re bringing in a guy who is 5-19 in the last two years in the Big Ten.
That’s not just racist. That’s idiotic.

KC Resident understands.

I think the eating bbq remark refers to Whitlock’s location (KC), not his race. BBQ is a unifier, not a divider.
December 15th, 2008 at 8:57 pm
But the vinegar proposition, that is a divider my friend. If you’re against it, you should have been aborted.

BBQ is a unifier, not a divider.
Amen, brother. You can’t throw a dead cat in this town without hittin a BBQ joint. For the record, I believe Whitlock is partial towards Gates. I’m a Oklahoma Joe’s and Authur Bryants’ man myself, but there are many great joints in town.

Damn, Mole. That’s harcore.

The Auburn nation is not happy. There is no way Chizik is going to be able to recruit against Saban, Richt, Meyer, Nutt, Patrino, and Miles.
Sir Charles gave an interesting radio interview locally this afternoon, telling how when Auburn was looking for their last basketball coach, he gave them the names of three black coaches, all of whom had been to at least the Sweet 16 in the last two years and was promptly thrown off the search committee.
As for having a white wife, it is still a big deal in the good ol’ boy, big money alumni world of the deep south. The boosters and AD got what they wanted, a coach they can control. Tubs didn’t put up with their shit and they couldn’t stand him for it.

If Chuck took his myopic goggles off for one god damned second, he’d see that there are also 20 or so potential white candidates better than Chizik too who would have gladly taken the job and were passed over.
Buffalo was a good but not great MAC team that got lucky in the championship. I doubt you’d consider a white coach jumping from Buffalo to an SEC power. Brady Hoke was a better MAC coach and he had to go to San Diego State, but Auburn is racist for not hiring Gill?

Sir Charles felt that Gill was the only coach out there who might give Auburn an edge in recruiting elite black athletes.
As it stands now, they are only going to get leftovers from the other programs.
