ESPN Lunacy: Cris Carter Would Solve the Cowboys’ Woes by Putting a Bullet in Terrell Owens; Michele Tafoya Finds This Hysterical
NFL December 30th. 2008, 9:00am
Got off a flight yesterday, turned on the phone, and a voicemail sounded something like this: “You have to blog about Cris Carter saying he would put a bullet in Terrell Owens. When you listen to the audio, make sure to listen for Michele Tafoya laughing.”
Starts at the 2:05 mark here (you’ll need ESPN Insider): Gottlieb and Tafoya ask Carter how he’d rebuild the Cowboys.
“If I’ve got a gun, I’ve got one bullet in it, I shoot TO right now, right on the spot. I have a press conference, I have him come in, and I put a bullet right there [inaudible] in him.”
Tafoya erupts in laughter. It isn’t even a fake “ha ha” - she blurts out uncontrollable laughter. There’s a nervous silence, and then Gottlieb attempts the save, saying “Tongue planted firmly in cheek.” Tafoya, remembering that she is employed by Disney, quickly repents and agrees with Gottlieb that it must be a joke. Carter says nothing.
Remember how when Cris Carter arrived at ESPN, many folks said, “man, what a great hire! He really knows his stuff!” Wonder how many of those folks are saying today, “just another level-headed analyst who goes to ESPN and turns into an incendiary, look-at-me imbecile.”
Cris: You sound like a buffoon. Do you want to be the second incarnation of Michael Irvin? What does the name Trev Alberts mean to you? Are you competing with Keyshawn Johnson to see who can make the dumbest, most vitriolic comments? Are you upset that Mark Schlereth’s “name” is bigger than yours right now because of his asinine “Reggie Bush is not a good football player” comments?
(We were completely wound up over those comments, but it was the holidays, and time didn’t allow for a lengthy, angry diatribe. But essentially, Schlereth seems to think he’s more of a man than Bush because he had 29 surgeries on his knees, and played through pain during most of his mediocre NFL career. Clearly, he believes that playing through pain on the offensive line is more difficult than playing through pain as a punt returner/RB. But more importantly, this is why we don’t watch any of those idiotic pre-game NFL shows. If he’s saying this junk on the radio, what other garbage is he peddling on TV? We’ll take the games and the Sunday NBC recap show, or ESPN highlights on mute, thanks.)
Essentially, this is what ESPN has created: An army of analysts constantly trying to out-do one another - not with reporting, but with fire and brimstone, as if that will make the show a ratings hit.
Apparently, this isn’t the only radio show in which Carter used his “bullet” analogy. Way to go, Cris. Now, you’ve been talked about by a couple blogs. Congrats.
Rebuilding Dallas by shooting a player. Brilliant. Thanks for the penetrating analysis.

I’m just hoping that the [inaudible] was Carter saying BOOM.
December 30th, 2008 at 9:11 am
it was an attempt to bring humor to his point that they should cut ties with TO (not the best attempt but he tried)… this is a non story on a football friday.. next post please
December 30th, 2008 at 9:12 am
I would have shot Romo and traded TO. TO might have some trade value. Not after he’s been shot of course.
December 30th, 2008 at 9:12 am
Garcia and Mcnabb have no clue why this is such a big deal.
December 30th, 2008 at 9:13 am
bad choice of words Cris
Mark Schlereth sucks. that is all
December 30th, 2008 at 9:15 am
Carter is an idiot. Makes you think about how disfunctional the relationship between he and Moss was during those Viking years. Carter was viewed teacher and Moss the student, but when their relationship went south it was obviously only Moss’s fault.
If I only had one bullet to rebuild the Cowboys I would line up 4-5 of them and hope I had a strong enough gun…
December 30th, 2008 at 9:16 am
what, now we’re so hypersensative we’re going to shut people down for hyperbole?
i have no problem with what carter said in any way. does anyone with an IQ over 80 actually think carter literally wanted to murder TO? i mean, come on.
on a serious note, i cannot believe some linebacker or lineman from frisco/philly/dallass hasn’t pulled TO into a back alley and beat him senseless. that guy absolutely destroys whatever offense he plays on because his ego and mouth are so inflated.
he may be the most talented receiver in the nfl but his 10 cent head isn’t worth an ounce of the aggravation.
December 30th, 2008 at 9:17 am
These are the values he learned at Ohio State University.
December 30th, 2008 at 9:17 am
The Cowboys need to clean house and replace Romo and TO with Vick and Chad Johnson. Problem solved.
How ’bout them Cowboys.
December 30th, 2008 at 9:17 am
Worst Quote ever, Reggie Tore the league up he was just hurt in the end. I lost my shit when I heard this. Flashback.
December 30th, 2008 at 9:18 am
i think Keyshawn is getting a lot better.
December 30th, 2008 at 9:20 am
addendum: if we’re going to crucify carter for his hyperbole, then we cannnot refer to long passes as “bombs,” we cannot refer to lopsided wins as “blowouts” or “a team got killed.” we cannot say a team got “murdered,” we cannot refer to last-second desperation passes as “hail marys” or “prayers.” i could go on and on.
December 30th, 2008 at 9:21 am
Cris Carter is a
scumbagscoundrel.December 30th, 2008 at 9:22 am
he is more of a man than reggie and it is harder to play OL than what reggie does (run east/west until he gets out of bounds) and to say schlereth was mediocre? he had a remarkable career and was a pretty damn good guard.
December 30th, 2008 at 9:22 am
reggie bush is a great athlete playing football well, but he isn’t a good football player.
December 30th, 2008 at 9:22 am
Man, TBL killed Carter for his comment.
December 30th, 2008 at 9:24 am
Agree with sparty, Keyshawn’s the best guy they’ve got on the pregame show.
December 30th, 2008 at 9:24 am
Tafoya is annoying, cant stand when her and Tirico are on together.
December 30th, 2008 at 9:26 am
These are the values he learned at Teh Ohio State University.
December 30th, 2008 at 9:28 am
OMG!! HUGE controversy!
December 30th, 2008 at 9:28 am
TBL is getting soft. No name calling(scumbag), No violence toward a guy who drops balls then causes drama in the locker room. Got it.
Chris Carter was just keeping it real.
December 30th, 2008 at 9:30 am
“This is a non-story. Murdering football players is no big deal.” - Charles Wardlow, Jason Mitchell, Eric Rivera, and that Venjah guy.
December 30th, 2008 at 9:31 am
ooo…way to sneak that in. very wordsmithy.
December 30th, 2008 at 9:32 am
“This is a non-story. Murdering football players is no big deal.€ - Charles Wardlow, Jason Mitchell, Eric Rivera, and that Venjah guy
is this supposed to be funny?
December 30th, 2008 at 9:32 am
Schlereth has 3 Super Bowl Rings. not exactly mediocre.
December 30th, 2008 at 9:33 am
pretty much. considering you have your own 300 pound body to deal with on that knee, and you have to push around another 300 pound body on every single play. then there are pile ups with guys being thrown into your knee about once every 4 downs.
December 30th, 2008 at 9:33 am
Depends on your point of view. It’s mostly making fun of Cris Carter for being an idiot.
December 30th, 2008 at 9:34 am
@happy- i think you were making in fun of Sean Taylor being murdered. that isnt funny
December 30th, 2008 at 9:35 am
Someone should go around asking all of TO’s current and former teammates if they agree with Carter on this one.
Going to go out on a limb here and say that most feel the same way.
December 30th, 2008 at 9:36 am
TBL doesn’t value the O-line. He likes shiny, sparkly things.
December 30th, 2008 at 9:37 am
No that’s not what I was doing. And you’re right, that wouldn’t be funny. I was saying that Cris Carter’s hyperbole was dumb and using an example as to why. Ironic that you’re telling me it isn’t funny since that was the point.
December 30th, 2008 at 9:38 am
Keena Turner has four super bowls. he can’t be mediocre.
December 30th, 2008 at 9:38 am
Most probably feel like if TO was thrown too more they would win more.
It seemed like when he caused that scene in Philly the defensive players had his back for some weird reason.
December 30th, 2008 at 9:38 am
If TO starts hanging out with Pacman, the odds of it happening skyrockets.
December 30th, 2008 at 9:40 am
Keena Turner
Who is that chick?
December 30th, 2008 at 9:42 am
Did you guys hear Robert Horry has 7 rings?
That makes him equal to a weird Shaq-Kobe-Mailman-Charles Barkey hybrid.
December 30th, 2008 at 9:42 am
schlereth was a starter on those three teams tho and was 2 time pro-bowl selection. he wasn’t a hall of famer by any means, but he def was better than mediocre.
December 30th, 2008 at 9:44 am
Dan Marino has zero rings. He does suck.
/zero sarcasm
//as sincere as one can be
///fucking hate marino
December 30th, 2008 at 9:45 am
Amen. To call Schlereth medicore is just ignorant. TBL, you just don’t like him because he’s white.
/NickP’d
December 30th, 2008 at 9:47 am
Hear, hear. ESPN belongs on mute. Schlereth is a fucking retard. I first realized this few years back when someone stumbled onto the phrase, “thrown under the bus” in mid show and Schlereth chanted it for a half hour.
Bring back Rush Limbaugh.
Fuck yo couch.
December 30th, 2008 at 9:48 am
and if we are going to make any references to reggie bush…
December 30th, 2008 at 9:50 am
TBL, Schlereth started on all those teams. games are won in the trenches. OL is more important than you would think.
December 30th, 2008 at 9:50 am
Um, not to veer off topic, but, Indy -1.5? This has to be my favorite bet of the year.
December 30th, 2008 at 9:51 am
OL is more important than a fucking RB. That’s for sure.
Btw, I believe Schlereth has a hot daughter that’s an actress.
December 30th, 2008 at 9:53 am
Sparty thanks for that picture. I have a pretzel in the Microwave but now Im going to wait a couple minutes before I get up.
December 30th, 2008 at 9:55 am
Schlereth is just one of dozens of former players who think they are more important than they are. In fact, he is not important at all. His analysis is dime-a-dozen and easily replaceable.
December 30th, 2008 at 9:57 am
Yeah Chris, but have you seen him on Guiding Light?? Dude definitely thinks he is God’s gift to the world.
December 30th, 2008 at 9:57 am
have received a few emails and links re: Schlereth and alleged use of performance-enhancing drugs.

December 30th, 2008 at 9:57 am
shooting t o would be a waste of a perfectly good bullet.
December 30th, 2008 at 9:57 am
unless your name is barry sanders, you need these guys to gain yards as a running back.
December 30th, 2008 at 9:58 am
while i disagree with TBL’s assertion about schlereth as a player, i totally agree with him being a shitty analysis. he adds not one single thing that isn’t a bullshit cliche and sucks at his job in that regard.
December 30th, 2008 at 9:58 am
Tampa, that reminds me of a trip I had to traffic court a few years ago. I was sitting in a room with a hundred or so other traffic violators waiting for the judge to call my name. There was a girl sitting in front of me the whole time with her thong showing (whale tail?), so for 45 minutes or so, I was just sitting there staring at it. The judge calls my name, I stand up, and oops. There was nothing I could do. I was pointing at him the whole time.
December 30th, 2008 at 9:58 am
His daughter…
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm2365730/
I hope she has a second job.
December 30th, 2008 at 10:00 am
because the guys he would be blocking (such as his colleague Mike Golic) weren’t on anything, right?
December 30th, 2008 at 10:00 am
Happy that’s why I don’t wear sweat Pants. I would go to Jail.
December 30th, 2008 at 10:01 am

wow.
December 30th, 2008 at 10:01 am
agree as well. most of these guys are replaceable, except for Trent Dilfer. Right, Spencer?
December 30th, 2008 at 10:01 am
meant to say analyst.
TBL…yea, he probably juiced to hell and back, but so did everyone back then, so it’s not that big of a shock. hell he was on a team with romanowski and shannon sharpe, two guys who used to show up to interviews with supplement and pharmaceutical companies’ logos on their hats…id be shocked if he wasn’t juicing.
December 30th, 2008 at 10:02 am
funniest thing i will read all day.
December 30th, 2008 at 10:03 am
you can’t replace a douche of dilfer’s proportions easily, sparty.
December 30th, 2008 at 10:03 am
Kinda cute, though.
Both of those articles framed Schlereth as pretty anti-steroid, so not sure why you posted them.
Even if he did, who cares? The NFL doesn’t.
December 30th, 2008 at 10:04 am
Even if he did, who cares? The NFL doesn’t.
Winner!
December 30th, 2008 at 10:06 am
Best pic of her here.
December 30th, 2008 at 10:06 am
I completely agree with Carter. T.O. needs to go. He is a huge part of the problem in Big D.
December 30th, 2008 at 10:06 am
jimmy and NickP - you fellas are gonna have to pick up the pace if you wanna hang with the big boyz
December 30th, 2008 at 10:07 am
+1 Tampa
December 30th, 2008 at 10:08 am
all i can find are head shots. let’s see the curves!!
his son, Daniel Schlereth, was drafted by Arizona last year. Fetch can probably break down everything about him.
December 30th, 2008 at 10:09 am
Yeah, fetch said he had a nice ass.
December 30th, 2008 at 10:11 am
Benji- Found one.
December 30th, 2008 at 10:12 am
Not sure if this is her, but it does look like her face. Kinda grainy, though.
December 30th, 2008 at 10:13 am
@benji - turn safesearch mode to off and you can see her dick.
December 30th, 2008 at 10:14 am
Did you guys hear Robert Horry has 7 rings?
That makes him equal to a weird Shaq-Kobe-Mailman-Charles Barkey hybrid.
Take out Mailman and Barkley (they know nothing of winning) and you might be on to something.
December 30th, 2008 at 10:19 am
Screw the mailman. I love the fact that his career ended at the Palace in 2004 when the Lakers lost Game 5 of the Finals to the Pistons (I was at this game and saw a championship won).
Championships:
Joe D - 3
Isiah - 2
Karl Malone ending his career with zero - Priceless
December 30th, 2008 at 10:31 am
We’re missing the bigger picture here, people.
Why does ESPN think that we give this much of a fuck about the Cowboys?
December 30th, 2008 at 10:35 am
Jay, more imoprtantly.. What does Brett Farve think?
December 30th, 2008 at 10:36 am
oh, apparently carter replied yesterday about this
December 30th, 2008 at 10:40 am
that is not how you spell “importantly”, dumbass
December 30th, 2008 at 10:43 am
PFT weighs in
December 30th, 2008 at 10:44 am
makblunt…i liked “imoprantly” better. im gonna see if i can sneak it in to a casual conversation today and sound smart.
December 30th, 2008 at 10:49 am
Well, the NFL season is almost over, and the Cowboys are done. So maybe ESPN can now move on and do the next thing that they do best:
Shove the Lakers and Duke basketball down our throats.
December 30th, 2008 at 11:34 am
I’m sure Carter really meant someone should shoot and kill TO. Wow. Talk about taking it literally.
December 30th, 2008 at 11:50 am
Sounded like Doug Gottlieb laughed at first comment too. Then when Carter repeated himself there is that awesome “holy shit, he just said that” pause, then Doug jumps in. Doug has certainly had his strong idiotic statements.
Re: Carter. He did not talk like this when he was a player, calling in for interviews. I noticed it when I caught of few minutes of either the Sunday or Monday night pregame. He was talking like I have never heard him talk before.
Oh well. Like you said, mute is a wonderful thing.
