It’s Getting Silly in Indy: Get Rid of Dungy
1-liner, Media Gossip/Musings, NFL January 5th. 2009, 2:30pmTony Dungy Must Go: What a weekend for columnist Bob Kravitz. First, he calls the Colts “underachievers” because they lost to the Chargers. (Like going on the road and losing is something to be ashamed of.) Now, Kravitz says it’s time for Dungy to go. (Then again, that’s his job – firestarter, get people talking, etc.) So getting to the playoffs 10 years in a row (NFL record) means nothing? The Super Bowl means nothing? We’re still surprised everyone drank the Colts kool-aid because they won nine games in a row. Remember when the Eagles tied the Bengals this season and everyone wanted Andy Reid and D-Mac banished? Ha! Knee-jerk columnist reactions – love it! (Indy Star)

So…What did I miss?
January 5th, 2009 at 2:34 pm
who is D-Mac? do u just make these nicknames up?
January 5th, 2009 at 2:35 pm
Kravitz is a Mariotti in a smaller market. He wants the Colts to get a new coach and new management because he hadn’t had access to the team for several years now. No one will talk to him, not players, coaches, Polian, anyone. He’s probably scared shitless because he has a bloated salary and the Indy Star’s been forced to lay people off left and right lately. His only recourse is to try and stir up shit whenever possible. He can call them underachievers all he wants, they’ve lost in the postseason twice when they “weren’t supposed to” and won a Super Bowl under Dungy. If that’s so bad, it’s fine with me.
January 5th, 2009 at 2:36 pm
9 games in a row is a lot…but in this shitty, shitty NFL season where nothing was for certain, doesn’t the safe bet seem to be the most consistently productive QB in NFL history?
January 5th, 2009 at 2:37 pm
Kravitz complained about Knight every year until they ran him out of Bloomington. Is it really that hard to find something to write about on a daily basis? Why not discuss the Manning injury cover-up and if the Colts hurt their chances for home field advantage by letting him play the first few weeks?
January 5th, 2009 at 2:37 pm
Manning is a first-rate choke artist.

January 5th, 2009 at 2:39 pm
Now remember, kids, CHOKE is a four-letter word, an angry little expletive thrown around by individuals who need to make themselves feel superior to professional athletes.
January 5th, 2009 at 2:41 pm
can’t you count? choke has at least six, or even seven letters.
January 5th, 2009 at 2:41 pm
Who cares? Sure, Indy rode a weak division to consecutive playoff appearances, but did anyone mistake them for some kind of dynasty?
Get rid of the bigot.
January 5th, 2009 at 2:41 pm
Hire Mangini!
January 5th, 2009 at 2:42 pm
Did he go a little far, sure, but both stories make good points. Every year (save one) its something, weather, refs, Pittsburgh kicked in your teeth, blah blah blah. It’s frustrating because they are so good in the regular season and because they have a lot of talent. I mean 3 of the past 4 years, one and done, during Peyton’s prime.
January 5th, 2009 at 2:42 pm
Call it what you want, but when you lose 3 out of last 4 playoffs in the first round there is a problem.
January 5th, 2009 at 2:43 pm
wow. any bullets left in that gun?
So if i can’t call McNabb D-Mac, what can i call him?
January 5th, 2009 at 2:43 pm
yea…STOP FUCKING RESTING YOUR PLAYERS AT THE END OF THE REGULAR SEASON!!! THEY GET FUCKING RUSTY!!!
January 5th, 2009 at 2:43 pm
Weak division? Wha? Pretty sure the Titans are Jaguars are always good. Yes, the Texans suck. But I’m also certain there was one NFL division this year whose four teams’ SOS were all 25th or lower.
January 5th, 2009 at 2:44 pm
Yeah, what is “choke is a four letter word” from?
January 5th, 2009 at 2:48 pm
Why is it that the media is not mentioning the poor officiating throughout this game?
Indy was penalized 9 times for almost 80 yards while SD only had 3 penalties called (I forget the yards, sorry). The two Defensive Holding calls in OT absolutely F’d the Colts.
The first one was on the Colts Foster, a defenseive lineman, who was being blocked (if you watch it again, you could easily argue Foster was being held) into the player he “held”. Holding on a defensive lineman is a very rare call, but in the OT of a playoff game? You’re kidding…
The second one was a holding on Colts DB Jennings. He made contact with Chambers w/in the 5 yd cushion, then once Rivers threw it Chambers ran into Jennings and Jennings got the call for holding… another ticky tacky call giving the Chargers a first down. What bullshit.
Granted the Colts didn’t go for the jugular earlier in the game and allowed the game to be within reach but still, an NFL playoff game should hinge on two flags in overtime.
This game still makes me wonder why a 12-5 team is on the road in the playoffs against a team with a worse record.
Also why is it the MVP of the league has to sit on the sideline while a coin toss decides the game. Awesome rule NFL, way to think of the fans here.
I guess we should get into those arguments another day.
January 5th, 2009 at 2:49 pm
@spencer096
Don’t teams usually win coming off of a bye? Manning and company played a little bit in the last game of this season so I find that reasoning hard to swallow.
January 5th, 2009 at 2:50 pm
@CRM: Casablanca. Or Stuck On You. Can’t remember.

January 5th, 2009 at 2:53 pm
is it though? manning thrives on getting in rhythm and clicking on all cylinders and the only way to do that is through repetition. the last three playoff exits by the colts have all had that rest in the last week and the year they win the super bowl they didn’t rest.
seems pretty plausible to me.
January 5th, 2009 at 2:53 pm
You proved my point phatj, its always something with the Colts, always an excuse somewhere. How about Peyton/Dungy had multiple chances to salt that game away in the 4th and just plain didn’t get it done. How about you’re playing an 8-8 team without its best player, and just didn’t get it done.
January 5th, 2009 at 2:54 pm
There’s no “reasoning,” it was just the way the games played out. Pittsburgh’s zone blitz destroyed Indy’s o-line in ‘05, the Colts had no pass rush in ‘07 and anyone can beat the Cover 2 with 10 seconds to throw. In this year’s game, the Chargers got an all-time great performance from their punter and it’s hard to drive 85+ yards when you have no running game. Shit happens sometimes.
January 5th, 2009 at 2:55 pm
Written by a commenter calling themselves “cubsdynasty”. I love it.
January 5th, 2009 at 2:56 pm
@phat: blame Polian. Those ticky tack fouls weren’t called in the playoffs 5 years ago.
January 5th, 2009 at 2:58 pm
Phat and Cracker
- The Pats mauled the Colts DB’s in the 2003 AFC Championship Game. That wasn’t why they lost, but it still happened. That defensive holding call on Saturday might have been ticky tack, but you can’t have it both ways. It was a good call. And I also have to question someone with the name “cubsdynasty” calling out anyone’s postseason ineptitude.
January 5th, 2009 at 3:01 pm
@coop: I’m not making an excuse for the Colts but those penalties in an overtime of an NFL playoff game are criminal. Regardless of which team that it was called on. I’m a Colts fan and I would’ve felt bad about winning that way had it gone exactly the other way.
I said that in my post. Or how bout lining up shotgun empty set with 2 yards to go when a first down seals it? There was many things that they should’ve done differently. That doesn’t make it OK for the refs to fuck them in the end.
I honestly think that LT would’ve been a non factor in the game anyway. Hes a step slower than Sproles even if hes healthy and that would’ve allowed the Indy dbs to fill gaps better whereas Sproles got through the gaps before the secondary could even blink. Thats just my take on that.
I didn’t mean to sound bitter in that post about the Colts losing. I just think that ANY game, especially a playoff game, being decided on a coin toss and 2 bad penalties is criminal.
/just saying.
January 5th, 2009 at 3:03 pm
@cubsdynasty: Can it really be a coincidence that the only Superbowl the Colts won was in a year where they played a competitive week 17 game?
January 5th, 2009 at 3:05 pm
The fact that I have to ask you WHICH holding call you are talking about is pathetic.
Neither holding call was a good call. No way was Chambers running into Jennings a hold. The Foster call was bad because he was getting pushed from behind into the player he held. Besides, how many times did Freeny DESTROY the Chargers LT McNeil and get pushed in the back/facemasked/or held and not get a call?
It should be more even, and if it isn’t, overtime is not the time to try and justify it.
January 5th, 2009 at 3:06 pm
I’m with phat. You shouldn’t call penalties against the team with the MVP in overtime. Especially if that MVP incorrectly called the coin toss.
January 5th, 2009 at 3:06 pm
BTW, I’m calling it now, that Polian brings up this rule for discussion this year in the competition committee. Bank it.
January 5th, 2009 at 3:07 pm
@crackerjack Of course it can be a coincidence or a spurious relationship. You are going off of one game/year/scenario.
January 5th, 2009 at 3:07 pm
He didn’t call it, their backup DT did.
/nitpick’d
January 5th, 2009 at 3:09 pm
@ clown: that should be the biggest discussion, the coin toss. Doesn’t Peyton know that tails never fails??
January 5th, 2009 at 3:09 pm
Your hatred for Polian is pretty strong. You’d think winning both of those AFC title games would be enough to not embitter you. I guess some are just more petty than others.

I looked up the Colts record since Dungy took over after a bye, they are 6-1 and average 31 points a game and 393 yards.
points yards
2008 Win 31 314
2007 Win 29 384
2006 Win 36 452
2005 Win 40 453
2004 Loss 24 446
2003 Win 30 391
2002 Win 28 311
31 393
January 5th, 2009 at 3:18 pm
Two separate things.
I’m saying from a “make the game better”, “make the game more fair”, “make the game more for the fans”, or whatever you want to call it standpoint why should a coin toss put any team’s best player on the sideline for a sudden death? That seems stupid in any situation, even more so in a playoff game.
I’m not saying don’t call penalties either. I’m saying don’t call ticky tacky calls, that haven’t been called all game, in overtime. Consistent officiating is what I’m looking for. Not inconsistent, game changing officiating.
I like how you tried to twist my words like you were an actual member of the media, that was sly.
January 5th, 2009 at 3:24 pm
Thank. It’s who I am, and what I do.
January 5th, 2009 at 3:26 pm
bsanders: I didn’t say it was neccessarily a bad thing. But a rule negatively effected his team and he will want to see if he can rectify that. But yeah, he is a dickhead.

January 5th, 2009 at 3:27 pm
You’re still focusing on the wrong part of the game phat, the game was lost (alternatively the Colts failed to win) long before overtime.
January 5th, 2009 at 3:29 pm
Cracker
- Polian and Belichick are both shitty human beings, but both are by far the best at what they do. Plus, Dungy hates the gays, so he’s not bulletproof.
January 5th, 2009 at 3:33 pm
I know, I thought it was bullshit when they started ending NFL games with four minutes left in the fourth quarter at first…but I’ve learned to adjust.
January 5th, 2009 at 3:33 pm
Agreed!
TMQ would disagree with you though. Good versus Evil!!
January 5th, 2009 at 3:42 pm
every team has 60 minutes to win a game. Teams know the risks when going to OT, if you don’t want to be there, don’t let mistakes put you in that position. tough titty, that’s how it is.
January 5th, 2009 at 3:43 pm
@coop: So you’re saying poor officiating is alright just because a team didn’t finish their opponents off?
@bsanders: If that is a shot at me, I don’t get it.
January 5th, 2009 at 3:45 pm
Yeah, no big deal if the refs decide to call the game completely different in the 5 period of the game. Its all a toss up anyway and you should know that…
January 5th, 2009 at 3:47 pm
No, it wasn’t. I was just pointing out that a game that goes to overtime is never over “long before overtime.” That’s a completely asanine statement, not made by you.
January 5th, 2009 at 3:52 pm
@bsanders, I’m tired of you’re unwavering support for the colts. I am a huge colts fan, and being such a big fan, one has to realize that Dungy needed to go years ago… If if wasn’t for that one fluke year of winning the superbowl, he would’ve been run out of town. Defensive guru?????
January 5th, 2009 at 3:56 pm
@bsanders, I thought it was directed elsewhere but havent been keeping perfect track.
January 5th, 2009 at 4:10 pm
Don’t you people know that it’s always the fault of the referee/umpire? The losing team is never, ever, ever responsible for what happened. EVAR.
