Your Chance to Sound off on the ESPN Redesign
1-liner, ESPN January 5th. 2009, 6:00pmESPN Redesign: First thing of note: If you thought the auto-video was bad before, it’s awful now, with a Sportscenter host shouting at us. Not a huge fan of the snazzy colors in the background. Then again, we’re very basic, and ultimately, are trying to persuade the wife into letting us have a minimalist family room – sectional sofa, recliner, table, and TV. Nothing on the table, bare walls, hidden TV wiring, no crown modeling (why do women love this?), no blinds, nothing. Well, maybe blinds for to cut down on the glare on the TV. At any rate, it is nice that Bill Simmons and Rick Reilly have been placed below the fold. It’s as if ESPN is promoting news over opinion, which we love. For that reason alone (and assuming the shouting SC host is a one-time thing), we actually like it.

I like it. It looks cleaner, there are not 97 drop-down menus across the top, and the auto-video has stopped … on the main page, but not on the NFL page.
Overall, it’s an upgrade. Then again, I’m not a rabid ESPN-hater, a la a certain LSU fan around these parts.

The one feature I always loved about ESPN.com is now gone. The ability to get to MLB/NFL/NBA/NHL scoreboard in one click. Hover my mouse over the league and choose Scoreboard from the dropdown menu. Now I have to go to the NBA page and then click scoreboard.
two clicks < one click
Colors are irrelevent. Content is the most important thing.

Was at a small dive bar in Hermosa Beach on NYE when in walks Reilly with some pretty hot older babe and some other couple. They were partying super hard. Then @ 2 am he walks out with a CASE of champagne on his shoulder. Seemed like a pretty nice dude. was friendly with everyone around him

My reaction? Meh….
January 5th, 2009 at 6:13 pm
auto-play on game recaps is the worst.

@chelsea – the scoreboards are still there, all the way at the top

Big splash ad hung my computer. Presumptuous/obnoxious enough.
Then, annoying Orbitz pop-under.
I had to deal with two ads, at which point I was annoyed enough to not click on any content.
I’ll be sticking with Yahoo …

I agree with Chelsea Chris, other than that its ok though.

Hi Mike.
Actually I have no opinion yet. I don’t like it right now, but that is usually the initial reaction.

Eh, don’t really care as long as they get rid of the guy yelling at me. There’s some show they always air at 5 p.m. EST where there’s four guys yelling at me that’s a lot more annoying and uninformed, though. Wonder if Bob Kravitz is hoping for a spot.

That is definitely my biggest complaint. That was the reason I got my scores from espn over yahoo which I usually like better. Now…any suggestions?

Firefox has adblock plus as a free download and I don’t get any autoplay. In fact, a lot of the ESPN homepage is blank because I suspect there are ads in those spots that are being blocked.

Yeah Firefox is def the way to go. It’s adblocking is unparalleled.
Also – Quizz – see Beard’s comment from above. You can still access the scoreboards with one click on the very top line (way up there).
AND – it looks like you can set video to not auto play under user preferances

PE – yeah saw that after i made the comment. i also disabled the video auto play under customize.
I changed my mind, the one thing I didn’t like was just me missing it at the top. I like the new layout. The nice thing about having the scoreboard at the top too is I don’t accidentally hit one of those drop-down menus like in the old design.

For some reason, I reallywish they would offer me a free Apple iPhone.
