Matt Stafford, Knowshown Moreno About to Announce They’re Leaving Georgia for the NFL
1-liner, College Football, NFL January 7th. 2009, 12:00pmStafford and Moreno: The press conference is at 3 pm, but the UGA boards all morning have been buzzing that both are goners. Intern Parrish said via email that the Bulldogs next year will look like the Tide did this year, and be bowling again. Stafford as a pro? Eh. Ditto for Moreno, whom we loved as a sophomore (when he had that awesome blocking FB). We suspect both will still go in the first round.

loved em both in college…think stafford has more upside…don’t see moreno doing anything special NFL wise.

TBL- How many times have you seen Stafford play? the kid has all the tools and is way ahead of a Sanchez, a guy for some reason you love as a pro.
January 7th, 2009 at 12:10 pm
Overrated? Thought the Bulldogs already looked that way this year.
January 7th, 2009 at 12:11 pm
yeah, stafford, eh.
moreno though… wow.
still think sanchez is better than stafford. for whatever reason i’ve never been that impressed with stafford. he’s not bad but he’s never impressed me like sanchez, graham harrell or even matt ryan.

Stafford won’t amount to anything. He’s got a big arm, but so do plenty of dudes. He never impressed me as an actual QB.
Moreno seems small for the NFL, but he is a big time competitor and runner.
I don’t think either of them will amount to that much, but I’d side with Moreno way before Stafford.
January 7th, 2009 at 12:14 pm
Jimmy how is Moreno a “wow”? He will be a solid NFL back but will need to be paired with a slasher to have a good effect. I wouldn’t rely on him to be an every down back.

The SEC is looking like it will be pretty pedestrian next year. With Tennesee/Georgia/Auburn/Arkansas/South Carolina/MSU/UK/Vandy all pretty average.
Top three teams are UF/LSU/Ole Miss being head and shoulders better than the rest.

Oh I forgot BAMA.
January 7th, 2009 at 12:27 pm
I’ve seen Sanchez play every game this year and it seems like everybody is wowed by the way he played against Ohio state and Penn State, but he looke awful during the year in the Pac 10. Poor decisions, poor throws. Carroll tried to say it was ofensive philosophy but he was killing them in some games.
January 7th, 2009 at 12:29 pm
Intersting point RS. It just seems like everyone is intimidated by USC, except Pac 10 teams. They were unimpressive throughout the Pac 10 season offensively.

diesel:
moreno is damned good, maybe the best in the country. possibly another shaun alexander. everything about the guy i like. he’s physical. he’s quick. he can catch. he’s about as a total package as you can get.
remember, the nfl is in an era now where the “every down back” is virtually extinct. when guys like willie parker and earnest graham can walk off the street (free agents) and succeed, i don’t see how moreno cannot.
January 7th, 2009 at 12:35 pm
isnt Moreno just a redshirt sophmore this year? so TBL loved him as a freshman, right?
January 7th, 2009 at 12:44 pm
I’m not sure Moreno and Shaun Alexander could be any less alike.
January 7th, 2009 at 12:52 pm
Stafford = Kyle Boller.
Moreno = Cadillac Williams
/guess’d

I think Moreno is the best back in the draft. I would like to say it’s Wells, but I have serious questions about his health.
I was skeptical about Sanchez until the bowl game. He runs the play-action pass as well as anyone I’ve seen in college football. I think he still needs another year though.
Stafford definitely has all of the tools and will probably be the first QB taken after working out and showing off his arm for the scouts. But I just don’t trust his decision making. I should say I, and most others on this board, had the same thoughts about Matt Ryan this time last year.
January 7th, 2009 at 12:57 pm
Stafford actually takes snaps from under center unlike so many other “top prospects for the nfl”.
Sanchez has NFL talent blocking for him, rbs to hand off to, and nfl wrs to throw to and he didn’t put up prolific numbers.
Moreno will be a nice NFL back, very nice. Has hands and speed not sure on the head and blocking.
January 7th, 2009 at 12:58 pm
Sanchez’s only bad game was against ASU. Other than that, he was slightly above average in all other games with a few great ones. It appears that his worst games came when USC struggled to run the ball thus affecting the play-action pass.

I honestly think UGA will look a lot like Bama. They will have a much better defense and a 5th yr SR at QB. They will have a really good o-line and will look to run the ball and hit the big play to Green…which sounds a lot like Bama.
January 7th, 2009 at 1:01 pm
He didn’t put up prolific numbers because he didn’t pass very much. He ranked 20th in yards passing and 46th in attempts (260 less attempts than Harrell).
January 7th, 2009 at 1:06 pm
Huh? as in, flirting with #1 ranking in the nation and playing for the SEC title? Whatever Intern Parrish is smoking, order me a pound of it…
January 7th, 2009 at 1:09 pm
What I mean is that UGA can still get to 9 wins. They won’t be spectacular just as Bama was not spectacular this year. Vandy, Kentucky, Auburn, and South Carolina will not be very good. LSU should be much better but they come to Athens. I do think Tenn will contend for an East title and finish 2nd to FLA though. TENN is pretty young and Kiffin will recruit well.
January 7th, 2009 at 1:17 pm
How exactly will they look like Bama? 1 position QB, and I already see a difference, where Bama already had a vet, UGA will have a newbie.
They will lose their 1st game of the year @ Oklahoma State….who returns everyone.
January 7th, 2009 at 1:22 pm
RS – big-arm QBs flame out often. stafford had great weapons at WR and maybe it’s just me, but i didnt see greatness.
January 7th, 2009 at 1:35 pm
Joe Cox is a 5th year senior that has seen playing time albeit in small doses. He will know the offense and will not turn the ball over (just like JPW). UGA will look to pound the rock and throw the ball to AJ Green while relying on their defense to keep them in games/give them great field position. Now, if there is one team that relied on that exact formula this year, who would it be? Alabama. Hence, intern Parrish’s stating they will look similar.
January 7th, 2009 at 1:47 pm
Awesome, thats what the SEC needs, 1 more shitty Offense….Congrats!
So I think he should have just compared them to every other SEC team other than Florida and Ole Miss.
Good Luck stopping Oklahoma State, esp at home. You can’t win shootouts with Joe Cocks and thats exactly what Oklahoma State plays…..
January 7th, 2009 at 1:58 pm
I was merely explaining why they would look like Bama. Georgia was supposed to have lost all of their early season, out of conference games, for about the last 5 years and funny enough, they have won them all. CMR has a pretty damn stout road record.
January 7th, 2009 at 2:02 pm
How do you see ole miss and lsu being any better than they were this year? lsu possibly since they were horse shit the second half of the year, but ole miss is losing a ton of seniors, and i think other than snead don’t have a whole lot coming back skill position wise. Arkansas will be much better next year (22 returning starters, plus Mallet at qb), and could possibly contend with bammer for the sec west.
January 7th, 2009 at 2:22 pm
Ole Miss still has a ton of talent due to Orgeron’s recruiting. I think their only losses are 2 OL (yes, Oher hurts), a WR, and 3 defensive players. They als get their tough divisional games (LSU, Bama, Ark) at home while avoiding Florida and Georgia next year. They’ll be in the mix.
LSU does lose some key players. I’ll reserve judgement until I see Charles Scott, and Jean-Francois return, but if Perriloux hadn’t screwed the pooch, they would have probably been right there this year.
I can’t see the SEC being pedestrian. Florida and Alabama will probably start the year in the top 5 if not the top 2. Georgia and Ole Miss probably repeat this year’s performance. I can’t believe Tennessee and Auburn will be as bad as they were. And Arkansas will be vastly improved.

Jets drafting Stafford = Shotgun to my face
January 7th, 2009 at 2:27 pm
@gods – the UK recruiting class is sick…on offense at least.
January 7th, 2009 at 2:32 pm
This last year it was highly publicized that Georgia was going west for a game for the first time since Dinosaurs roamed Pangea.
So them winning home Non. Conf games does not impress me. Also who exactly were these stud teams that were favs over Georgia at home?
Don’t get to frisky after beating an Ariz St team that was shelled the week prior by UNLV, esp next year when you have not Stafford or Moreno.

358 miles for noncon road games since 1998 before Ariz. St…..lol
January 7th, 2009 at 2:35 pm
The only problem is their defense was terrible this year and you’re losing a great back. I’m not sure how losing your two best players makes you better off (record wise).
January 7th, 2009 at 3:35 pm
UGA was a huge dissapointment this year, (part of which was masked by the unusually weak SEC) and now they lose their top 2 offensive players and you guys see them getting better?
