So Many Suitors, Only One Manny Ramirez
Baseball January 8th. 2009, 11:15am
Manny Ramirez left Boston, with a Boras-infused vision of four-years $100 million. Suddenly motivated, he hit .396 with a .489 OBP, a .743 SLG and 17HR in the final 53 games. In the playoffs, Ramirez reached base 24 times in 36 plate appearances. He was Barry Bonds without the backne and shrunken testicles.  Despite Manny’s Herculean efforts, however, he’s not getting that money in this depressed slugging market. Here are the teams rumored to sign him in reverse probability order.
Texas Rangers: SI’s Jon Heyman claims the Rangers are “mulling” Ramirez. His evidence is that the Rangers’ GM told MLB.com they haven’t ruled out a move for him. But, to our knowledge, they haven’t negotiated with him. Owner Tom Hicks does have a profligate history. Though, the A-Rod and Chan Ho Park experiences would seemingly scare him away. There’s also the $250 million he owes the Royal Bank of Scotland and Wachovia in six months.
Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim: The Angels need a power bat. That’s why they traded for Teixeira last season and why they made a substantial free agent offer. However, the club’s GM denied they were considering Manny, they resigned Juan Rivera to play corner outfield (settle down) and if any manager was to be put off by Manny half-assing it in Boston, it would be Mike Scioscia.
New York Mets: Manny would be a monster addition to the Mets’ lineup. Â Ramirez would also bump the Yankees off the back pages, because that’s crucial to winning the World Series. But, the Mets aren’t so stable financially, with Fred Wilpon’s losses in the Madoff scandal. If they sign Derek Lowe along with K-Rod, that’s already a substantial payroll addition. Manny would be conceivable, but unlikely.
San Francisco Giants: The Giants are gunning for the NL West next season. They signed Randy Johnson, Edgar Renteria and bullpen help to short-term deals. Their pitching can carry them with an average offense, attainable with a big bat. Manny is by far the best one available. It would keep him away from the Dodgers and we know how much Brian Sabean loves slightly rotting veterans. If no one claims him, the Giants might move in, but two interested teams could outbid them.
Los Angeles Dodgers: The Dodgers presumably still have the money. They offered Manny two-years $45 million before revoking it. LA saw how blistering he can be last season. They seem to be negotiating with the upper hand. But, Bill Plaschke thinks the Dodgers handled things “perfectly,” which should worry them. Boras may be money-grubbing and borderline evil, but he’s no fool. He wouldn’t be so stubborn with cards so poor.
New York Yankees: The Yankees have more money than anyone. If New York needed more motivation than a 3-4-5 of A-Rod, Ramirez, Teixeira and Manny, having him in pinstripes would be a wonderful f— you gauntlet to John Henry and the Red Sox. He would upgrade the Yankees’ mediocre corner outfielders, who the Yankees, perhaps not coincidentally, are trading. New York with Ramirez would be the envy of all, the talk of the town and the World Series favorite. They would leave the smug Red Sox grumbling and apoplectic. It’s too much of a Yankee move to not happen.

Boston: Because, you know, you’ve hooked up with an ex before. Just give us another chance, we’ll make it right this time, we swear. We’ll be more patient and let you creatively express yourself to your heart’s desire. I know we had an emotional rollercoaster, but no one will ever love you like we did. Ever.

He would upgrade the Yankees’ mediocre corner outfielders
This is probably the first, last and only time anyone’s thought that Manny would be an improvement over any other outfielder.
End of the day, he’s either going to Frisco or back to the Dodgers. Anaheim’s too smart to get him, the Mets won’t likely back another mega-contract because Omar Minaya knows he’d be the next to go if it fails and the Yankees (who could get involved) would become a Dallas Cowboys-like freakshow with A-Rod and Manny and Jeter all in the same clubhouse.

at the plate, not in the field.

I hope he does sign with the Yankees. Anyone else get the feeling that because the Yankees are signing all these top FA’s they are doomed somehow? I can’t back this statement up with anything other than wishful thinking, but it would just make it all the more sweeter if they didn’t make the playoffs or lose in the first round again.

Cleveland: It would be a grand homecoming. The city would welcome their prodigal son home. Ah, who am I kidding?

He would be an upgrade over just about every corner outfielder (save maybe 5?) in the league.

Throw in Roid Rage Roger, Steinbrenner Sr., and a few talking statues in monument park and I smell MLB Network’s first sitcom.

I am LOLing at the Lane Bryant ad on the top of the page… I am thinking this is not their target audience.

As sparty said, at the plate. Fielding wise, not so much.
Gary Matthews, Jr.
Not the same thing. Matthews was accused of doing something hidden from the eyes of everyone else — and that couldn’t be confirmed. Manny’s flaws are there for all to see.

I am leaving my self imposed exile to say this…I understand what the Mets are doing..pitching first…but getting Manny not only extends that lineup…It is a giant fuck you to Philly..let them enjoy Raul Ibanez’s old age ( and Championship, cockbags)…Manny is fine wine…Ibanez is Ripple. Omar..do this.
January 8th, 2009 at 11:55 am
No. You value a player based on total package, and his hitting (+35 to +40) and his defense (-10 to -15) make him one of the most valuable corner OF in the game.
Holliday is the only guy who projects to be better than Manny this year. Other candidates include *maybe* Braun, Soriano, Drew, Rios, etc. I wouldn’t bet on it, though.
January 8th, 2009 at 11:56 am
Nick..you forgot the Tatis/Murphy platoon.
/seriously Omar..do this
January 8th, 2009 at 11:56 am
yeah, Manny really worked out well in a suffocating media market in Boston, I’m sure he’ll love it in NYC…
i’d like to see the Yankees sign him to a 4 year deal, eliminate themselves from Matt Holiday next season and be stuck with one of the oldest teams in the league.

Wilhelm..if you mean his two world championships and Hall of Fame stats…yes he was pretty good up there
January 8th, 2009 at 11:59 am
A 3-4-5 of A-Rod, Ramirez, Tex and Manny? Are they trading for A-Ram too?
January 8th, 2009 at 12:00 pm
Self-imposed exile?
What happened, Roman? Maggs get the best of you?

There seems to be a lot of fluff in this post because there is little to no chance the Rangers, Giants, and Mets will sign this guy. The Yankees and Dodgers are most likely while the Angels finish somewhere in between.
January 8th, 2009 at 12:26 pm
In Manhattan, fans don’t follow players around and pretend they’re best friends. He’d have a much easier time in New York than he did in Boston.
January 8th, 2009 at 12:33 pm
Manny at Citi Field would be a disaster.
He would help the Mets lineup a lot … it’s going to take bombs to get a ball out of there, and Beltran, Wright et al. are going to see a lot of flyballs die on the track. But Manny trying to cover LF in that behemoth? Yikes.
My guess is if it were up to Manny (and not Boras) he’d land in Texas, DH for a year or two, and play just enough in the stadium-that-built-Arod to get himself one more two or three year deal elsewhere.
January 8th, 2009 at 12:33 pm
good to see you Roman
January 8th, 2009 at 12:38 pm
You Too Irish
Dude…I understand your concern but it is not like Murphy/Tatis is like Barry Bonds pre-juice out there
January 8th, 2009 at 1:38 pm
I would love to see the mets get him. yea hes a great hitter but it won’t make up for the perpetual losers on that team.
