We Haven’t Spent Five Minutes with Tim Tebow, But After Last Night, It Is Now Our Dream
College Football, Media Gossip/Musings January 9th. 2009, 9:00am
Can someone please check Thom Brennaman’s identification? Seriously. We’d like to see his social security card and passport. We firmly believe he is in some way related to Mountain-Mover/QB Tim Tebow. (Speaking of the Tebow’s family, why no shots of them during the broadcast? Were they in the Phillippines?) We pulled one of Brennaman’s many lascivious quotes last night, and a couple other bloggers are getting on his case for letting the hyperbole fly. Seconds after the game ended, here’s what he said:
“And really, Charles, you begin the conversation now when you talk about greatest players in the history of college football. Tim Tebow, a pair of national championships and a Heisman Trophy award in three years. He is unquestionably in that Top 10, perhaps now in that Top 5.”
In the modern era alone, a couple guys that come to mind are Nebraska’s Tommy Frazier, Oklahoma State’s Barry Sanders, Georgia’s Herschel Walker, and maybe even USC’s Reggie Bush. Brennaman got a little carried away with the excessive praise last night – how many times did he say unquestionably? Four? – and our biggest gripe is that while Tebow had a good game, there are two reasons the Gators really won that game:
1. The Florida training staff for working their Miyagi-like powers on Percy Harvin’s ankle. Harvin tallied 171 all-purpose yards was the offensive MOP. Someone mentioned he could be a Desean Jackson-like figure in the NFL, and that’s a much better assessment than our previous Peter Warrick comparisons.
2. Charlie Strong, the Florida defensive coordinator whose phone will be ringing off the hook for the next week after devising an outstanding plan to hold the highest scoring offense in the history of the sport to 363 yards of offense and 14 points.
Both of these points were lost on Brennaman (who really is a baseball guy) and Charles Davis. It was all-Tebow, all the time. Even over at ESPN (we had to get away from FOX as soon as the game ended), Desmond Howard and Lee Corso was effusive in their praise for Tebow and Harvin … and then Chris Fowler jumped in to mention the Florida defense as the primary reason the Gators took their second championship in three years.
Tebow is a great college football player. No question. What has taken the Tebow love to another level are his off-the-field activities, the political stuff, the church stuff, and of course the big-boobed woman on his arm. He reminds us a little bit – and pardon the white-on-white comparison – of Duke’s Christian Laettner. Great college player, great winner, detested by most everyone who doesn’t attend that school, and probably will be a nice pro with a solid but far-from-spectacular career.
We’d like to see Tebow come back for one more year. Three titles and two Heismans? Then we’d definitely listen to the argument about him being one of the best players in college football history (remember, he only split time as a freshman). What’ll help his cause more than anything: the defense is devoid of seniors. Spikes may jump to the NFL, but 10 others should return.

The only thing more ridiculous than the love Tebow gets from the media is the hate he gets from the blogs. Seriously, two posts on this in the matter of hours? You win a Heisman and a National Title and your name immediately will be mentioned as best of all-time. I’d like to wait and see what happens next year, but he’s certainly in the conversation. And competent writers like Tony Barnhart agree.
You pretty much damn your argument here as Laettner is seen as one of the greatest college basketball players ever.
I think Harvin is more of a Reggie Bush type. He’ll run a little (not as much as Bush), but mainly be a guy that can line up in various positions on the field trying to find mismatches. If put on the right team, he could be really, really good.
January 9th, 2009 at 9:08 am
Yes he did. I think I heard him say “every minute you are with Tebow you are a better person.”
January 9th, 2009 at 9:09 am
He’s in the top five, no question about that. Still the slurp didn’t match his on field performance last night.
January 9th, 2009 at 9:10 am
Not really caring too much about Tebow, I do have to post a comment about how horrible the FOX announers were last night. I know Brennaman’s a baseball guy, but come on…know your downs and distance! And while a Florida player is down on the sidelines in obvious pain, let’s not go to a replay two or three times before finally mentioning a player (the player who was tackled) was down on the sidelines. It’s really annoying that a network that shows NO college football the entire season has the BCS rights. I hate that I’m saying this: I’m thankful ESPN will soon have the rights.
January 9th, 2009 at 9:11 am
Well said TBL, completely agree. Tebow is freakin great, and he was instrumental in that win, but the defense and Percy should get most of the credit.
If Fla was going to win, it was nice to see them hold OU to 14 points, finally showing how absolutely fraudulent the Charmin Soft Big 12 is, can we stop killing the Big 10 for a day and ban Stoops from all future title games.
January 9th, 2009 at 9:13 am
+1
January 9th, 2009 at 9:14 am
It was actually a hairline fracture in his ankle. The heel was before the season.

January 9th, 2009 at 9:14 am
top 5 ever? let’s hear your top 10, just for kicks. dont have to explain things, but well all riddle it with bullets.
and NSR – there’s no hate for tebow. i like the guy. big fan. but the announcers got so caught up with blowing tebow that they missed the point – the DEFENSE WAS INCREDIBLE. not once did i hear a breakdown of what the heck florida was doing. disguising looks? how? what about some aerial evidence? where were all the easy slants that bradford hit to no end the last 6 weeks of the season? how did florida take it away?
fox was dreadful.
January 9th, 2009 at 9:15 am
Stoops should take the Broncos Job.
January 9th, 2009 at 9:15 am
I think Brennaman does Big Ten Network games, does he not?
January 9th, 2009 at 9:17 am
I actually thought him and Davis worked together on BTN games.
January 9th, 2009 at 9:18 am
McCoy will win the Heisman next year and the Horns will be the BCS/AP/Harris/Spencer National Champs. End of story.
January 9th, 2009 at 9:18 am
it’s kinda surprising to say this but…thank god for ESPN coming to the rescue. they may do a lot of annoying shit, but ESPN does college football well.
January 9th, 2009 at 9:20 am
Top five ever, yes. He was the first person to win the Heisman as a soph. First person to run and pass for more than 20 tds in the same season. He contributed to two BCS titles for Florida. Will he be a great(or even good) pro? hells naw. But he is in the top five.
January 9th, 2009 at 9:22 am
TBL – in case you were unaware, Strong has a white wife and shit like that doesn’t fly in the college football head coaching community.
January 9th, 2009 at 9:25 am
I say top five ever, with a hype machine that spreads across THREE tv networks. That old fat creepy guy who swooned over him during CBS’s coverage of the SEC championship, of course Lou Holtz loves him at ESPN, and of course Brennaman totally swallowed the money shot last night with FOX.
January 9th, 2009 at 9:26 am
yup, posted on it yesterday, miz.
mak – top five? really? ok, let’s hear the top 5. dont have to be in order, just the top 5. it’s much more difficult to compile the list than just say “top 5″
January 9th, 2009 at 9:29 am
I was Ron Franklin to eulogize me at my funeral using home spun phrases and good old fashioned charm
January 9th, 2009 at 9:30 am
My top 5:
1. Orlando Pace
2. Eddie George
3. Troy Smif
4. Craig Krenzle
5. Terry Glenn
Just my opinion, of course.
January 9th, 2009 at 9:31 am
hershel walker
barry sanders
tommy frazier
archie griffin
tim tebow
that’s not the order…
January 9th, 2009 at 9:32 am
Does Mo Clarett not exist in your world Nick?
January 9th, 2009 at 9:33 am
nick, you left off arcihe? you are a young buckeye, aren’t cha?
January 9th, 2009 at 9:33 am
25.
January 9th, 2009 at 9:34 am
he exists in buckeye-land, but he’s not mentioned by name, only number.
his one year was fucking amazing…shame he was such a douchebag.
January 9th, 2009 at 9:34 am
Hershel Walker, Barry Sanders, JIM BROWN (y’all are struggling for forgetting him), Tommy Frazier, Tim Tebow.
January 9th, 2009 at 9:36 am
Archie’s better than at least one of those system QBs.
I love Mo-C. Always will. Banners fly forever.
January 9th, 2009 at 9:37 am
OJ Simpson carved through defenses the way Tim Tebow does through Phillipino foreskins…he has to be Top Ten right?
January 9th, 2009 at 9:38 am
i’m not that old lance, but you’re right.
January 9th, 2009 at 9:43 am
ButtersBC- That may be the post of the year and we are only 9 days into it. Well done sir.
January 9th, 2009 at 9:44 am
Reggie Bush blew my mind.
January 9th, 2009 at 9:44 am
Mak I turn 22 next month but I can respect the past.
January 9th, 2009 at 9:44 am
Utah is #2 in the final poll.
In other news Thom Brennaman is still on Tebow’s poll.
January 9th, 2009 at 9:45 am
Archie’s second Heisman was a joke. I would take Reggie Bush, Dorsett, Bo Jackson, Jim Brown, and Earl Campbell over him as RB’s.
January 9th, 2009 at 9:45 am
Makblunt – your list needs serious help. CFB did exist before the 1970’s. People like Staubach, G. Davis, Grange, J. Brown, etc. laugh at your list. Sanders may be your only legit entry.
January 9th, 2009 at 9:45 am
fair, but that’s not ‘ever’ there are several players from like 1900-1970 who deserve inclusion. here are just a few:
http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=3086827
January 9th, 2009 at 9:46 am
OJ was top 10 ever…shame that he’ll be remembered for his off-field behavior. watching old clips of him is ridiculous, it was unfair. it looked like he was from the future playing in a game none of those guys could comprehend.
January 9th, 2009 at 9:46 am
Reggie Bush < Rocket Ismail(as far as mind-blowing plays)
Utah finished fourth on the coaches poll.
January 9th, 2009 at 9:47 am
If your helmet is leather or doesn’t contain a facemask, you are not eligible.
January 9th, 2009 at 9:49 am
He never rushed for 1000 yards in college so I don’t rank him that high. But id we’re talking lacrosse…
January 9th, 2009 at 9:49 am
What did OJ do?
January 9th, 2009 at 9:49 am
Red Grange says “Blow me”
January 9th, 2009 at 9:50 am
In 50 years someone will say “If your helmet didn’t have a heads up display and rockets on your shoes you are not eligible.”
January 9th, 2009 at 9:50 am
I think he’s talking about his Naked Gun movies.
January 9th, 2009 at 9:51 am
Starred in the third Naked Gun movie…had they just stopped at two he’d still have his Heisman Trophy
January 9th, 2009 at 9:51 am
Earl Campbell was a beast/monster/mutant, and a half.
January 9th, 2009 at 9:52 am
He made some horrible Hertz commercials that overshadowed the Naked Gun movies.
January 9th, 2009 at 9:52 am
I heard Red Grange was pretty decent. They named an award after Doak Walker. Glenn Davis/ Doc Blanchard were pretty good. Marcus Allen, OJ, Earl Campbell, Billy Sims. LeeRoy Selmon………..
January 9th, 2009 at 9:52 am
I’d take Beanie Wells over Archie, as far as talent. Bu that’s the difficulty of comparing across eras. Who else has 2 Heismans?
January 9th, 2009 at 9:53 am
From his page on Heisman.com:
I think they may have missed some details…
January 9th, 2009 at 9:54 am
Tebow/Brennaman > Farve/Madden
/knob-slobbering’d
January 9th, 2009 at 9:54 am
If Tebow comes back he could.
January 9th, 2009 at 9:55 am
That Heisman.com entry is definitely not /jmorris.
January 9th, 2009 at 9:55 am
OJ was top 10 ever…shame that he’ll be remembered for his off-field behavior.
What did OJ do?
I think he was caught robbing some dudes to get his sports memorbilia back. Oh, and he killed his wife and her lover according to the results of a civil suit.
January 9th, 2009 at 9:55 am
Harold Edward “Red” Grange (June 13, 1903-January 28, 1991) was a professional and college American football halfback for the Chicago Bears and the New York Giants. He was a charter member of both the College and Pro Football Hall of Fame. In 2008, he was named the greatest college football player of all time by ESPN.
/jmorris
January 9th, 2009 at 9:56 am
I put jim on there because he opened several doors: race-related, power-running. If you only put up decent numbers, I think you can make up for that by changing the game in a few ways. Earl is a hero of mine and Hershel was outstanding, but they def owe some royalty checks to Jimbo.
January 9th, 2009 at 9:56 am
he shouldn’t have rob those people. His legacy would not be tarnished if it wasn’t for that. Oh, and that murder thing. Wasn’t he found innocent?
January 9th, 2009 at 9:56 am
I agree two Heisman’s is a great accomplishment, but in ‘75 the runner-up outgained Griffin by 600 yards. And if you look at the next 8 Heisman winners, the list goes:
Dorsett
Campbell
Sims
Charles White
George Rogers
Allen
Walker
Rozier
If Griffin’s career happened during any of those years, nobody outside of Columbus would know who Archie Griffin is.
January 9th, 2009 at 9:58 am
Not to mention the great job he did in The Dirty Dozen
January 9th, 2009 at 9:58 am
False.
January 9th, 2009 at 9:58 am
Wasn’t he found innocent?
Not in the civil suit. Although I don’t think innocent or guilty matters in that.
January 9th, 2009 at 9:59 am
Ernie Davis > Jim Brown in college
January 9th, 2009 at 9:59 am
Who would be older, Ernie Davis or Jim Brown?
January 9th, 2009 at 9:59 am
I lobbed that one up for you, Tampa. I was hoping for a smack out of the park, but all we get is a bunt? Come on.
January 9th, 2009 at 10:01 am
Let’s set aside the hyperbole for just a second. He retired as the NCAA’s all-time leading rusher. So maybe a few people outside of tOSU-ville would have known who he was.
January 9th, 2009 at 10:01 am
Jim Brown
January 9th, 2009 at 10:02 am
Although I don’t think innocent or guilty matters in that.
Except financially, which lead him to where he is now.
January 9th, 2009 at 10:02 am
Turns out that I’m the one struggling.
January 9th, 2009 at 10:12 am
Fellas, Archie Griffin is not a one-name athlete. When you someone mentioned Archie as one of college football’s all-time greats, the first Archie that popped in my head was Archie Manning … who, in my neck of the woods, is still considered one of the best quarterbacks to ever lace ‘em up.
I think the argument for Tebow is not is he one of the best, but one of the most accomplished and decorated college athletes of all time? A contributor in two national championships and a Heisman Trophy make is hard to argue that he’s in the conversation. And, as a Tennessee fan, I would love to hate him, but I can’t. I just hope he leaves Florida. But he’s probably not.
January 9th, 2009 at 10:15 am
Thank god ESPN bought the BCS, because I was actually considering never watching NCAAF after that travesty of a crew that was on the game last night for Fox. Worst fucking announcing crew. Ever. No argument can be made otherwise. It was Tebow all the time until the last minute of the game and then they started talking about how OU should be proud. Fuck Off!!!
An what is this fucking shit about Stoops being on a hot seat if he didn’t actually win the game last night. These fucks should be happy that this team actually made it to the fucking game. Florida as well. this fucking tired BCS system has made people fucking stupid with expectations. Fucking be happy that the team actually made the game, rake the cash and shut the fuck up.
January 9th, 2009 at 10:16 am
Puck off, Miss.
January 9th, 2009 at 10:17 am
Pardon the anger, I really hate the BCS and all the old rich foggies that run it. Greedy fucks that cheat the fans who pay for it of a really champion.
January 9th, 2009 at 10:17 am
Kiper was on the Mikes this morning. His prediction for Tebow? If he left his year, he is a 3rd or 4th round pick… AS AN H-BACK. He repeats, to anyone that will listen, that Tebow is not an NFL QB. He can run some “Wildcat” or funky plays, but will never be a starting NFL QB.
That said, the kid is a great college player. He gets a disservice from the sheer amount of knee pad needed publicity, which taints his career (and his life) to a portion of the public.
If he comes back next year, with that defense intact, he may end up one of the best college players of all time. He will have a chance at winning 2 straight national titles (he won’t get credit for 3 from me since he wasn’t the starting QB when he was a frosh), winning 2 Heismans, and chalking up a boatload more TD’s courtesy of that ridiculously good offensive scheme.
January 9th, 2009 at 10:20 am
LOL at Pistol Pete
January 9th, 2009 at 10:20 am
I’m sure you’ve supported Tressel and the Big 10 with similar statements in the past.
January 9th, 2009 at 10:21 am
I know a lot of people don’t like tebow but he is top 5 in my book and if he wins a heisman and another title next year he will be #1. The other 4 that I would mention would be, in no order:
Tommy Frazier
Herschel Walker
Bo Jackson
Dave Rimmington
January 9th, 2009 at 10:26 am
Fox was amatuer hour. Mind boggling how little those guys knew about the actual game.
Listening to Herbstreit, Corso and Fowler after the game was much needed. At least those guys know their shit and discussed some of the interesting shit and Florida’s D other than rewording the same cliches over and over.
January 9th, 2009 at 10:27 am
I have had the exact same feeling for most of the teams that have been chosen for the BCS Championship game. With every team having one loss being eligible for the game whoever makes it should just be happy.
I am not supporting any of these factory conferences, because they are all stuck in the fucking tradition and history (which really means dollars and cents), and refuse to admit that some of these outside teams can actually beat them and are scared to death of being shown up in a tournament.
January 9th, 2009 at 10:29 am
Do you know who’s record he broke? Ed Marinaro. Not too many people know who that is and probably don’t know what school he went to. Thus, retiring as the NCAA’s all-time leading rusher does not equal notoriety.
January 9th, 2009 at 10:29 am
Does anybody actually care/listen to Kiper anymore. I honestly have no idea how true some of his predictions have been. I would love to see some research on how his projections look five years later.
January 9th, 2009 at 10:31 am
I’m still waiting for the blogosphere to unload on Bob Stoops and Oklahoma with a Ohio State-like “oh, of course they lost a big game! they never win big games!” now that they have lost 4 straight BCS games.
For some reason, it doesn’t seem to be happening though…
January 9th, 2009 at 10:31 am
Of course nearly all of the ESPN analysts (save Herby) all said that USC was still the best team in the nation. If FLA played PSU I’m pretty sure the same thing would happen yet no one discusses this. They see Pete Carroll and feel the need to get on their knees. Between Tebow and Carroll the media must believe that it is totally necessary to have a praise-off. Totally ridiculous.
January 9th, 2009 at 10:33 am
That guys is stealing money. He and Berry (the ESPN fantasy dude) should be in prison for larceny.
January 9th, 2009 at 10:34 am
You probably aren’t hearing about Stoops and Oklahoma in the blogoshpere because most people realize that neither of these teams might not have belonged in the game in the first place. I know that’s all I heard in the media the last three days leading up to the game though, was how Stoops could be on the hot seat if they didn’t win, cuz getting there just isn’t enough.
January 9th, 2009 at 10:57 am
I;m surprised Bush isn’t getting more play as a top 5 college player. N/C, heisman, top 5 heisman, electrifying player. I’m sure the NFL stuff and all the violations have hurt him,but he was dynamic. If Tebow is getting all this love where is it for Bush? And before we talk about how great Tebow is, last night before the second to last FLorida possession he was 12-22 with one TD and 2 INTS. If Florida’s defense wasn’t awesome last night they would have been down 2 TDS at that point. And when the game was tied in the 4th quarter who got the ball on 3 straight possessions? Percy Harvin.
Tebow did make some plays to ice the game but to think he was some kind of messiah last night is utterly false. He was very average.
January 9th, 2009 at 12:00 pm
That just makes me pissed off all over again in how Carroll could have R.Bush off the field on that 4th down and 2 that cost USC the National Title in ‘06.
January 9th, 2009 at 12:09 pm
/fixed
January 9th, 2009 at 12:35 pm
Ed Marinaro went to Cornell, and later was an actor on Hill Street Blues as well as some corny Saturday night show that had Sela Ward in it. I forget the name of it…
January 9th, 2009 at 12:50 pm
Tebow’s love of taunting isn’t really consistent with the humble, great person thing.
January 9th, 2009 at 12:54 pm
1) Bob Griese
2) Leroy Keyes
3) Drew Brees
4) Mike Phipps
5) Otis Armstrong
January 9th, 2009 at 1:02 pm
Why the hate for Tebow?
