Philadelphia is the New New England
College Basketball, NFL, NHL January 12th. 2009, 4:30pm
Phillies win the World Series. Red Sox let fail in ALCS, then miss on Tex.
Eagles reach the NFC Championship game. Patriots lose their QB in week one, then miss playoffs.
Flyers in first place in the Atlantic. Bruins are actually better, but it’s only hockey.
76ers? Well, Elton’s out, but he’ll be back soon. Celtics fading fast.
Villanova? Jay Wright’s awesome at recruiting guards, but eventually, he’ll need to bring a capable low-post scorer into the program. Boston College beat UNC, but then it lost to Harvard and Miami. At home.
JC Romero? No supermodel is perfect.

I live and grew up just outside Philly, and hate all Philly teams and fans almost as much as anybody you’ll meet, and even I’ll argue that the fans here aren’t even close to the level of obnoxiousness (is that even a word?) that New England has achieved.
My stepdad is from Boston, and he’s way more obnoxious than Philly fans. Just regarding sports, but it’s infuriating all the same. Fuck Boston.
Go Ravens.

Ouch. Just killing this guy today.

rot in hell.

Re: Wright and big men. Sumpter was a really good player, no?
Cunningham is 6′8″, I think — and a damn good scorer.

Suck it Philly! (clap clap, clap clap clap)

TBL, have you watched Villanova play this year? At all? Their leading scorer is a “capable low-post scorer” in Dante Cunningham. Antonio Pena is also developing into a low-post scoring threat, he just can’t shoot foul shots. Villanova’s problems this year have NOTHING to do with lack of scoring in the paint, and everything to so with inconsistent point guard play from Corey Stokes. If Stokes gets his act together, this team can contend for a Final Four…inside play is not an issue.

That hurts, spence. Cuts me deep.

i hope so…you, and im holding you personally accountable, owe me three years of NFL back…and a super bowl.
i’ll settle for art modell’s head on a stick.

I would probably recieve much more abuse here than I normally do if people realized I was a fan of all Boston teams. As far as this post, wake me when the iggles and the sixers win titles

AND michigan…im just shocked i actually like your writing and don’t want to burn your house down while you’re sleeping.

Well, sadly, head on sticks is not something I’m particularly skilled with. I think my dad’s despair over the Colts is actually worse than yours over the Browns. I think he still might be crying on the inside about that one. It’s legit sad, 20 years later.

This is laughable. Villanova hasn’t beaten anybody yet. They played zero true road game out of conference and left the Philly area once to play at MSG. This Nova team better figure out how to make the tourney because if they go 9-9 in the Big East they might be out. Their schedule is one of the easiest in the conference and they won’t get a bump from playing a tough schedule in conference.
They better get their act together. They haven’t gotten any better since last year and they barely got into the tournament last year. You can make the argument that every other team outside of Louisville has gotten better. Forget about the final 4.
January 12th, 2009 at 5:21 pm
sorry just because he’s leading them in scoring doesn’t mean he’s a capable low-post scorer, IMO. i’ve seen villanova enough to know that cunningham is a nice player, but a garbage man and a slasher, not a guy you can dump it down to who will try a move and get to the line. look at how many Fts he attempts per game.

i like nova – to watch. they’re quick and fun and run and gun … but i just dont know how much of a factor they can be this year in march. i think next year their 3 guards will resemble foye/allen/nardi.
January 12th, 2009 at 5:26 pm
i think RS and I are on the same page is BE hoops. mostly.
just a gander at BE weaknesses:
louisville – chemistry, PG
gtown – youth, rebounding
ND – shot selection, defense
syracuse – depth, inside scoring
connecticut – passion, takeover offensive force
marquette – size, size, size
pitt – depth, history of march letdowns, sam young in a big spot
that being said, i think a few of these teams could have F4 potential. im starting to think the NCAA title is wide open. hell, marquette could be a F4 team. stanford was just a bad matchup and it nearly pulled that one off.
January 12th, 2009 at 5:32 pm
Just not sure how much you guys have watched Nova this year…Cunningham’s game has certainly transitioned to much more of a low post, than any slashing bs. And, not only that, they certainly aren’t getting out and running this year. They are definitely playing a lot lot lot more half-court offense…Stokes just isn’t good enough to run and gun.
I was not of the opinion that Nova will make the Final 4, or even contend. If they had a PG better than Stokes, I would feel differently.
January 12th, 2009 at 5:34 pm
couldn’t they run more if Scottie was on point?
January 12th, 2009 at 5:34 pm
Nova seems to be at their best when they are running, but I think Jay V is right that they are predominantly playing a lot more half-court offense. I think when they run on offense it helps them have more energy defensively from what I’ve seen out of them.
January 12th, 2009 at 5:38 pm
Sponge…it’s been suggested, but Wright seems against it.
January 12th, 2009 at 5:41 pm
I certainly could be half crazy and other half wrong because i usually dont watch College ball until Feb. but hasnt he run it in the previous seasons? at least for a little bit?
January 12th, 2009 at 5:50 pm
TBL: i suppose you are right in saying that Dante Cunningham is not your typical low post player, but you should have made that distinction. Cunningham is arguably NOVA’s MVP at this point.
btw, check their recruiting class for next yr and tell Jay Wright that he can’t recruit post players
January 12th, 2009 at 6:17 pm
We’re talking about the 17-20 76ers and the 30-9 Celtics, right?
/don’t let me stop you from enjoying your Jump to Conclusions mat
//this post could be the lead story on Sportscenter

I think you pretty much nailed it. Syracuse’s weakness will be turnovers and not depth as much and Gtown will have trouble with their perimtere scoring if Dajuan Summers doesn’t step up, but other than that I would have to agree.
I still think UConn is the team that is most set up to play the varying styles in the tourney. They can run and they can play half court offense if they need to. Whether they have the will to do that is another issue.

Your theory is flawed TBL, Boston dominates in the category of obnoxious fans and fugly women and the media slurps Beantown all the live long day.
Philly is a big beast, Boston = minnow.
January 13th, 2009 at 8:07 am
Hopboy: Just you wait. 2-3 more titles for the city of Philly, and all of a sudden everyone will hop on the bandwagon that Philly fans are the most horrible human beings to ever walk the planet. Just think about this: was there even close the current over the top complaining about Boston fans pre-2001? Personally I cant wait to transfer the hatred of the country onto Philly.
January 13th, 2009 at 9:23 am
I hear you Crack-jack, but the media was always in love with Boston. Even non-Boston fans love Ted Williams and the history of the Red Sox, I know I do.
I think what ended up happening to Beantown is that there was over-saturation of the Red Sox/Yankee rivalry and the Celtics turned into goons after they won and now they are on everyone’s sh*t list. Tommy “Dreamboat” Brady and the whole Patriots thing were/are still respected by non-Boston fans, but the Red Sox and the Celtics killed it for Boston in my opinion.
The media is not enamored with the Philly/south jersey/Delaware area, so we will always be more of a Baltimore than a Boston, which I am cool with.
January 13th, 2009 at 10:22 am
I would actually venture to say the Patriots are the most hated franchise of New England.. even pre-Spygate.
January 13th, 2009 at 12:33 pm
The Patriots are a different story, Spy-gate may have tainted the titles a little but they are still respected by most non-pats fans for no other reason than the scorched earth policy Darth Belichick used after Spy-Gate blew up.
I think the Red Sox and Celtics thing is more of an example of the country turning on the teams after initially embracing the two because both teams became annoying and lame. The Pats were never annoying, they just always won and consistently winning always garners hatred. At least that is just my opinion.
