Michael Phelps Speaks!
1-liner, Michael Phelps February 5th. 2009, 1:45pmMichael Phelps: “I’ve been waking up to guys yelling into megaphones outside my window at 7 o’clock in the morning,” he said. “I’ve been through just about everything you can go through. I’ve had paparazzi people following me from my house to my mom’s house. People knocking on the door. It’s crazy.” Also, it should be noted that not everyone at the Baltimore Sun is giving him a free pass: “Let us not absolve ourselves of blame; before, during and after the Beijing Games last summer, the drunken-driving incident was all but left out of the heroic narrative. One wonders whether he thought he was done paying any consequences for it.” (Baltimore Sun)

Still bothers me that Phelps’ DUI charge got ignored. I really did lose a lot of respect for him and didn’t give a shit in the world if he won 8 gold medals or not. I was certainly not on the Phelps Hype Express then and I still am not now.

That Sheriff in South Carolina will get Phelps

I don’t know if you can say it’s hype. The guy was pretty dominant and did everything he had to do from a competitive standpoint. As for the DUI, he blew a .08, right at the limit. So it’s not like he pulled a leonard little or something.

Yeah, life is tough winning six gold medals and being financially set before you hit age twenty.

if he satisfied whatever sentence the court gave him for the DUI, shouldn’t he be done paying the consequences of it? at least until there is a reason (ie. a crime) that makes it relevant again?
if he gets busted for this, i want the cops busting everyone on myspace, etc that is smoking or drinking underage

good for those assholes to wake him up
February 5th, 2009 at 2:06 pm
i listen to the morning show that woke him up while on my way to work. it was actually pretty funny. i know a lot of people around baltimore who weren’t big on him despite the olympic success, maybe b/c the dui was a bigger story around here as opposed to nationally.

@Ruck: he was 19. any alcohol would’ve been against the law.
February 5th, 2009 at 2:17 pm
I didn’t say he didn’t break the law, but it wasn’t like a crime against humanity or anything. He paid his dues for it. The bigger offense is now that the olympics are over, all of a sudden its popular to turn and villainize this guy because there’s nothing better going on.

Bolt > Phelps

i agree…the jamaician smokes WAY more ganja than phelps.
February 5th, 2009 at 2:40 pm
Nope…still not giving a damn…

Also lost in the mix is that this past year (2008) the DA that prosecuted Phelps got a DUI himself, but still has a job.

Phelps was a 19-year-old and blew a .08. He broke two big laws. He paid his dues.
The guy busts his fucking balls in the pool for four straight years and in the process gives up his entire college-age life, friends and weekends for a shot at glory. He accomplishes that glory and gets a few months off. He’s 23. What the fuck else do you think he’s gonna do? He’s acting like most any 23-year-old who’s been cooped up for the previous four years and currently has a shload of money and women. He smoked weed. Whoopie. Welcome to college, Michael Phelps.
Get off his fucking ass.

It’s not that he got high, it’s that he was dumb enough to do it in an unknown crowd and allow somebody to take a picture of him with his grill buried in a 3-footer full of ganja.
