If You’re a Young Golf Prodigy, People Are Going to Throw Tiger’s Name Around: Meet 7-year-old Brett Sodetz
Golf, Youth Sports February 5th. 2009, 3:45pm
Anybody catch this kid’s story on the CBS News last night? (Hope a CBS reference doesn’t make us sound old; it is our 6:30 news of choice.) The New York Times profiled 7-year-old first-grader Brett Sodetz at the end of December, and we finally got a glimpse of his ability last night. Not bad!
Many parents would love to see their kid to succeed in sports – otherwise, why would parents be paying top dollar to see if their child is best suited for power sports or speed sports? But uprooting the family from Chicago to move to Nevada so their kid can play golf year ’round (four or five times a week), and then spending $20,000 on lessons?
Seems a bit excessive. Fortunately, the parents are balancing his schedule out with other activities like the guitar, karate, and Spanish lessons. But so far, the money has been well spent – last year, Sodetz beat out 1,200 golfers aged six and under to win a golf tournament.
No need to go confusing the kid with Tiger Woods – the greatest golfer in the history of the sport shot a 48 on nine holes at the age of three.

Soon enough the kid will start to hate golf and they will be spending that 20k on therapy and rehab.

Check this girl out from down here. She has the potential to be incredible. She played in the US Women’s Open at age 12. Her brother is a pro, other brother is playing in college..

i was bowling with friends one time and we saw a mother, father and son bowling right next to us. the kid was crying the whole time saying much he hated bowling but his parents forced to throw ball after ball after ball. it was awesomely funny but i wanted to kick the parents for forcing their kid to do that shit.

CBS News? Wow. I had a hard time believing Katie Couric when she was telling me that Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston broke up. How can I believe her telling me about the economy or Afghanistan?
Rough decisioning for the parents. Do you push the kid in something that he is obviously very talented at? or Do you let the kid explore different things to become more well-rounded? I’m not sure how I will do so when my kids get older. I don’t think there is a right or wrong so long as the kid is still allowed to be a kid…

Tampa Bo – Did you say you know how to play the piano?

first broke par at age 6…was a scratch by 8. only person to win three US Amateur titles…
do you have any idea how absurdly, otherworldy talented Tiger Woods is?
he’s mozart-esque when it comes to prodigies.

Totally uncalled for CRM. I owe you a gay joke.

The real question is, does this kid still leave 20% if his McNuggets are a bit overdone?

You must be right, because Woods is in therapy too, plus he hates golf.

100% guarantee for the next 50 years: ANY kid people refer to as the next Tiger Woods will become anything but the next Tiger Woods.
