Another Week, Another Lane Kiffin Drama
College Football, Recruiting February 10th. 2009, 3:45pm
Rapidly becoming our favorite topic of college football: Lane Kiffin. What’s not to love? An ego that can’t fit in Neyland Stadium? Check. Hot, Friday Night Lights-caliber wife? Check. Plays by his own rules? Check.
The first incident occurred when a fog machine was used as a recruit entered Neyland Stadium during a visit. In the second incident, nine prospects who were visiting took part in a mock press conference at the media center inside Neyland Stadium.
Under NCAA rules, schools are prohibited from simulating a game experience for recruits during official visits. Recruiting coordinator Ed Orgeron was also issued a letter of admonishment.
What’s sad is that Orgeron was a head coach at Ole Miss, and must have known it was illegal. Kiffin is a hot mess and we’re loving every minute of it.
How fun is the SEC? It has the best coach (Meyer), ego-maniacs (Spurrier, Kiffin), a born choker (Richt), a guy everyone loves to hate (Saban) and a guy who is playing above the rim and will be mocked throughout the year (Chizik). Actually Chizik may not get berated too much - Bobby Petrino’s bound to bolt for another job anyday now.
UT reports recruiting violations by new coach (Tennessean)

While this makes Kiffin look dumb I cannot believe this stuff is outlowed by the NCAA. Seriously, of all the things they should worry about this is on their list. How is Richt a born choker? Seriously, timing is everything. UGA goes 13-1 and because two teams go undefeated in crappy leagues they get to go ahead of them. Florida goes 13-1 twice and no one goes undefeated thus putting them in the title game. Hell, LSU loses 2 times and still gets in…again, how is he a choker?

Fog Machines rock!
February 10th, 2009 at 3:52 pm
Yeah it’s a pretty big circus thus far. I’ll reserve my judgment until we hit the football field, but I can’t lie and say I’m not a little weary at this start.
February 10th, 2009 at 3:52 pm
Though I guess it was Richt’s fault that UGA had 18…yes, 18, players go down with season ending injuries this year.

Sean Jean: Kiffin has looked very young and, at times, stupid. However, I still want to see how he coaches. I think everyone thinks he will land top notch talent but the question is how will he coach; or more importantly, who will play QB for him. I just don’t know if Crompton is that good.
February 10th, 2009 at 4:00 pm
Kiffen’s method of operation has to be “just win baby”.
/ironic
February 10th, 2009 at 4:02 pm
Gods: No doubt. He is embarrassing us thus far. He’s acting like a little bratty kid, and I’m not too pleased. I’m giving him the benefit of the doubt so far, but he isn’t making it easy on himself.
As for Crompton, I do think we’ll get better QB play this year. Our entire offense was just a disaster last year. From every position down.

mizerle06 approves of all of these nefarious shenanigans.

September can’t come fast enough. Having to sit through months of baseball gibberish makes me sick.
February 10th, 2009 at 4:08 pm
The NCAA is so hypocritical. Big surprise that pile of shit Miles Brand is running it. Bust kids for doing the smallest infractions, then sell your soul to corporate america… doesn’t make sense but I don’t care. I hate that prick. He ran IU directly into the ground
February 10th, 2009 at 4:08 pm
You are claming that the 13-1 Georgia team was better than a Miami team that won 35 straight games and produced 12 1st rd draft picks? Or was Georgia better than the Ohio St team that beat Miami and produced another 8 1st rd picks? The Georgia team produced 5, with backup TE Ben Watson being by far the best pro on the team. Next.
February 10th, 2009 at 4:10 pm
Also, I absolutely love Kiffin. There is nothing “Collegiate” about college basketball or football. Let them recruit, pay the kids, don’t even make the kids go to class. Kiffin just pushes the system to the edge, that’s why I love him
February 10th, 2009 at 4:11 pm
Miami would have assraped that Georgia team.
February 10th, 2009 at 4:12 pm
I’m claiming that it is all about timing. Also, both Miami and OSU played shitty schedules, this is not even debatable.
February 10th, 2009 at 4:14 pm
I have no clue as to who would have won the game. But if you look at that Miami team they didn’t beat anyone of note all year long. Again, who’s to say what would have gone down, but it is all about timing.
February 10th, 2009 at 4:15 pm
Miami played Florida that year also Gods, and beat the shit out of them. The same Florida team, who, you know, beat Georgia.
February 10th, 2009 at 4:15 pm
If he starts handing out free lava lamps, it’s over.
February 10th, 2009 at 4:16 pm
pat devil should have transferred to UT.
February 10th, 2009 at 4:17 pm
Also, of note, Bryce Brown is visiting UT this weekend.
February 10th, 2009 at 4:18 pm
pat devlin, not devil. my bad.
February 10th, 2009 at 4:20 pm
Transitive property arguments are so lame.
I’m not sure I would want any part of this kid. I know he is a stud but his “handler” is shady as hell and this kid has NCAA violation written all over him. Anytime you handler’s reusme includes former rapper and cell phone store manager I would be worried.
February 10th, 2009 at 4:21 pm
All I know is that the gazillions of crappy gator fans here are salivating that Kiffin is an idiot. Please, Sean Jean, let him coach well and at least beat Florida to shut them up.
February 10th, 2009 at 4:22 pm
Ex-USC offensive coordinators seem to like this one. Sarkisian was found guilty of doing the exact same thing up here. Where’s our post TBL?
February 10th, 2009 at 4:23 pm
Where is the outrage about Sarkisian at UW getting busted doing the same exact thing with the fog machine? I wonder where the two of these learned this trick? I dont know maybe Pete Carrol? Orgeron, Kiffen, and Sarkisian all hail from U$C….jes sayin
February 10th, 2009 at 4:25 pm
lol. wtf? Then don’t claim they played a weak schedule as a basis for your argument. Rather than playing each other, they played the same team, which is the closest proxy, and Miami beat the shit out of that time while Georgia lost. And the game was in Gainesville, by the way. QED.
February 10th, 2009 at 4:25 pm
Bryce figured out his “agent” was full of shit? No one explained to me how would he get 5 mil a year in the CFL when each team’s salary cap in only 4.2 mil?
February 10th, 2009 at 4:25 pm

USC has become untouchable to the NCAA. I’m not sure why but that team has more shadiness surrounding it than any other team yet nothing is ever done.
February 10th, 2009 at 4:27 pm
Big L, there’s no outrage because it’s a secondary violation. Every team has them, and they’re self reported with basically no consequence (unless you have a bunch of them, a la Neuheisel). The only reason this one is news if because Kiffin has been doing such an excellent job of making an ass of himself in his brief tenure.
February 10th, 2009 at 4:28 pm
I like what Kiffin is doing, and I’m not a UT fan (or haven’t been). When kids are allowed to assclown their signings by fucking around major Universities (ie Pryor last year and Brown this year), to high school coaches “forbidding” players to attend certain colleges due to a beef w/ the college coach (Plant City coach vs Randy Shannon and Pahokee now w/ Kiffin), I’m glad sometimes to see a young guy do this.
He will probably get his ass kicked, but here’s one guy hoping he doesn’t (until he does somethiong that pisses me off, then I’m done w/ him)
February 10th, 2009 at 4:28 pm
As bad as Tenn was this year, I’m pretty sure you have to win at least one game to get national news coverage.
Over/Under on the Kiffen era, 2.5 years.
February 10th, 2009 at 4:28 pm
Yeah I can’t really blame them thus far. All I can do is sit back and take it, since our coach does look like an idiot thus far and they have won 2 of the past 3 national championships. Assholes.
February 10th, 2009 at 4:30 pm
i like kiffin. plus he gives something besides arod to talk about.
February 10th, 2009 at 4:32 pm
UT isn’t coming within 3 TDs of UF at the Swamp. But good luck with that.
February 10th, 2009 at 4:38 pm
You can’t be serious. Those Miami teams could have played an entire Ivy League schedule and followed that up against the MEAC and still would have come out and stomped a mudhole up the ass of that Georgia team.
February 10th, 2009 at 4:40 pm
thank god for that… and kiffin’s wife.
February 10th, 2009 at 4:42 pm
until ESPN shows her picture more than once. At that time she will become teh ebil and overrated

I have $20 that says Petrino is at Arkansas at least 5 years.
Any takers?
February 10th, 2009 at 4:53 pm
“Playing above the rim” doesn’t mean what you think it does.

The Bucks beat 2 of the top 10 teams in the Final AP poll (Washington St, Michigan) and 3 of the top 16 (also Penn State) that year. But don’t let facts get in the way of a good tOSU bashing.
February 10th, 2009 at 4:55 pm
I approve of all of these nefarious shenanigans.
February 10th, 2009 at 4:57 pm
And they beat #2 Miami of course.
February 10th, 2009 at 5:00 pm
I’m taking the over…but only because you didn’t set it at 3.5 years.
February 10th, 2009 at 5:03 pm
nice petrino rip thrown in there at the end.
February 10th, 2009 at 5:42 pm
If they played the same schedule, than yes, this argument would hold water. But seeing as how they played one team I think your argument is a stretch. Playing 7% of the same schedule doesn’t quite add up to me.
