Another McAllister is Cut (Goodbye, Deuce)
1-liner, NFL February 17th. 2009, 12:40pmDeuce is Loose: A day after the Jags cut loose Fred Taylor, the Saints have done the same to 30-year-old RB Deuce McAllister. If we were, say, the Jets, and we couldn’t get our paws on Donovan McNabb, or we decided Chris McAllister of the Ravens was done, then sure, we’d grab Taylor or Deuce to steal 5-10 carries a game from Thomas Jones. We’d pursue Taylor over Deuce. (NOLA)

Hey, more over-the-hill “names” the Jets should sign! TBL is a master of the Jerry Jones/Dan Snyder model of roster building. How about the Jets just do their homework and draft better?
February 17th, 2009 at 12:47 pm
Why would they take either? They have Washington and Jones. If they had to sign any of those (they wont) they should get McAllister.
February 17th, 2009 at 12:48 pm
If the Saints don’t grab a power back, they’re going to be even worse next year.
February 17th, 2009 at 12:49 pm
TBL why would you want either of those bums? When you have Leon Washington to steal carries from Thomas Jones.

Deuce is also single-handedly responsible for getting the Saints to their only NFC Championship game. He carried that team on his shoulders in the 4th quarter against Philly.
And then next week in the snow and wind in Chicago, he ran the ball 6 times for 18 yards, while Drew Brees threw 49 passes.
That sums up the Deuce McAllister/Sean Payton era in a nutshell so far. There’s snow and wind, and Deuce was unstoppable last week, so let’s throw the ball 49 times! (and the game wasn’t out of hand until the last 10 minutes or so)

TBL- why would taylor or deuce waste their time with the Jets for 5-10 carries? these guys are looking to split time in the backfield somewhere, or be the main guy.
the Jets already have someone that should be getting the ball for at least 10 carries a game, in Leon Washington.
February 17th, 2009 at 12:54 pm
the shelf life on RBs these days is short, and while i like leon washington, i dont think he’s as good a pure RB as Deuce or Taylor. I like Washington returning kicks and catching passes out of the backfield. dont think of him as a between the tackles guy.
giants had 3 RBs. steelers had 2 and russell. cowboys will have 3 next year. if you can take the pressure off your No. 1 guy, why not? it’s not like taylor or deuce are going to be expensive.

If the Saints don’t grab a power back, they’re going to be even worse next year.
Then the Saints will be worse next year. They had Deuce last year, and they still ran reverses and pitchouts to Reggie Bush on 3rd and 1. I hope he learned his lesson, but I have my doubts.
February 17th, 2009 at 12:55 pm
@Jay: Payton clearly would rather throw 50 and run 10 than throw 30 and run 30.
As for Deuce…sad to see him go. But major knee surgeries on both knees and a large contract on a 30-yr old RB = bye-bye time.
I’ll hope he can be resigned at a lower rate.

Or, ya know, the Jets could just draft a back in the third or fourth round instead of wasting cap space on someone with little tread left on their tires who even if they signed for the vet. min. would cost twice as much as a rookie. Or they could worry about the bigger holes on their roster.

The Giants backs are under the age of 30 as well. Ward is gone, Danny Ware will take his place.
February 17th, 2009 at 12:58 pm
TBL…why are you operating under the notion that McNabb is somehow available? He’s not. He won’t be. Odd.

I don’t know where our resident Saints fan is hanging out today, but i will pass on the opp to take a shot at Payton and Brees.

that’s what they said about favre … before he ended up with the jets. let a boy dream, will ya?
February 17th, 2009 at 1:02 pm
BFFredo, I don’t think that’s what he truly wants to do. I just think he gets caught up in out-thinking the other coach and does too many stupid things as a result. As I said last year, he’s the kind of coach who would run a flea-flicker on 3rd and goal from the 1 because “the other team would never expect it.”
That playoff season sums it up:
Vs Philly–34 rushes, 32 passes: WIN
Vs Chicago–12 rushes, 49 passes: ASS KICKING

The Colts will sign Haynesworth and go 19-0 before the Jets will end up with McNabb prior to the 2009 season.
February 17th, 2009 at 1:06 pm
the biggest holes would be … on offense, which sputtered down the stretch.

jones didn’t have a 100 yard game in december. a DB is top priority, and if one assumes (prays?) that gholston becomes a pass-rushing force, i think the defense will be fine.

Re: Taylor
I wonder how much of this had to do with him speaking out towards the end of the season about the locker room problems. Del Rio is very anti player’s voice (see peterson, mike). Word is Taylor even offered to take a paycut, but was axed anyway. I’d be worried about MJD as a feature back, though theyre sayin greg jones will get more carries….I’m rambling here. I love Freddy T

Bsanders, top 3 things Caldwell needs to address this offseason are? Hayden, obviously. He’ll get franchised I think…
O-line? Lilja is always hurt, Saturday is getting old…
#3? Cut Marv? D-tackle?
I’m getting nervous as I think the window for them has 1 or 2 years left.
February 17th, 2009 at 1:08 pm
TBL this is what drafts are for dont waste your time and money on old guys.

Isn’t there usually somebody else out there with me? I’m only half-assed today because I’m taking a real sick day. This is one of my few chances to talk on a weekday.
February 17th, 2009 at 1:10 pm
I wouldn’t blame that on Jones, I would blame that on Favre hitting the wall and the offensive line regressing down the stretch. I don’t think spending probably at least a million of your cap space on a third-string RB is a good way to manage your roster.
February 17th, 2009 at 1:15 pm
Top priority has to be Hayden, but his agent is playing hardball so they might have to franchise him. If Saturday will sign a two-year deal, hang onto him, but if not at least they’ll have an entire offseason for Richard to get ready this year. They’ll try to get Harrison to restructure as he can still be a productive third WR, but if he won’t then they’ll have to cut him and try and grab another wideout in the second round. I think they have to go DT in the first round, most likely Peria Jerry.
I’m not sure about the window closing, as they’ve done a good job of replacing their aging guys with younger versions. Peyton’s 32 and Marvin’s old, but other than that Saturday’s the only guy on offense who’s over 30. I think Brackett’s the only guy on defense anywhere close to starting to slip.

The Jets will be a solid 5-11 next yr. With no QB, an old roster, and no cap room. Good job Jets.
