Beers are on Nnamdi Asomugha … For a While
1-liner, NFL February 20th. 2009, 9:45amNnamdi Asomugha: (Eyes bulging out of head) “The first two years pay him $28.5 million – all guaranteed. That’s how much he would have made if the Raiders used the franchise tag on him. The difference now is both years are guaranteed against injury. The third year will pay him $16.8 million, or the average of the top five quarterback salaries whichever is higher … The Raiders have a team option for that third year but must void it in early March 2011 or that season’s salary becomes fully guaranteed … the contract includes a guarantee that the Raiders will not use the franchise tag on Asomugha again. In other words, Asomugha becomes an unrestricted free agent after either the 2010 or 2011 season.” It’s why Tom Condon is one of the best agents in the business and why the Raiders are … well, the Raiders. *Ahem.

So this gets 26 original words but Cole Hamels adopting some AIDS-ridden kid gets its own post?
February 20th, 2009 at 9:49 am
So this is a bad deal? I like the idea of locking him up for 3 prime seasons. He’s good, you know.
February 20th, 2009 at 9:49 am
is he really that good? i mean, his reputation is top-notch, but seeing as no QB throws his way, i never really get to see him work.
February 20th, 2009 at 9:50 am
I’ve never even heard of this guy. Is he a real person?
February 20th, 2009 at 9:52 am
Yes, he’s really that good and no way the Raiders pick up that third year. I have to say that seeing a corner getting the average of the top-five QB salaries is one of the quirkiest things I’ve ever seen in a contract. He’s far and away the best corner in the league, but I think the Raiders would’ve been better off getting saying a first and third in return for him and using that cap room elsewhere. But it being the Raiders, they probably would’ve spent it all on Cedric Benson.

He’s making more than the postmaster general!

Asomugha is the type of player you overpay; the best cornerback in the NFL squarely in his prime. He’s worth extra to Oakland because of their man-to-man scheme.
/Rotoworld – They know everything.

But he and his agent got someone to pay it, so no, it doesn’t bother me. Leave the rich alone!

Don’t see that much of a problem with this contract other than the guaranteed element. He’s the best CB in football by most accounts. Thus, he should probably be paid like it. And if the Raiders weren’t the ones giving him this money, someone else would have.
February 20th, 2009 at 9:55 am
Little know fact – the Raiders actually think Nnamdi is the Nigerian sending them all the emails and were just trying to help them out in return for more money.
February 20th, 2009 at 9:56 am
this is very true, however, im still torn.
he’s a great CB and is awesome in that scheme, but CB’s are like RB’s to me…just not as important as pass rush.

they’re 10 times more important than pass rush when you DON’T have a pass rush
btw +1 roeth

Agreed. I think Super Bowl 42 and the ‘07 Colts vs. Pats game proved that a great pass rush is the best way to neutralize a great passing offense. But I think the real reasoning behind this is the Raiders realize no good free agents are going to come to Oakland anyway, so why not spend the money on a dude who’s already stuck there?
February 20th, 2009 at 10:06 am
Good one, Roeth.
February 20th, 2009 at 10:07 am
that’s why you use that money for pass rushers, not secondary guys.
look at the past SB champs…pit, great pass rush. NYG, great pass rush. colts, great pass rush. pats, great pass rush. see the trend?
CB’s are overrated…oakland should learn this. either that or join the 21st century and have your safeties play 2 deep.
February 20th, 2009 at 10:09 am
I don’t think this guy is real, and I think everyone else is just playing along.
Where’s a Yu Darvish post when you need it?
February 20th, 2009 at 10:11 am
Have to agree, pass rush is the key to stopping the passing game. There are too many good quarterbacks that given time will pick apart any DB. Making the QB uncomfortable is the best way to go.
February 20th, 2009 at 10:24 am
like putting them in the back seat of a volkswagon?
February 20th, 2009 at 10:39 am
As long as he’s taxed at a 50% rate, it’s all good.
/BSanders
Seriously though, you don’t pay that much for corners.
February 20th, 2009 at 10:49 am
spencer: I agree w/ your point. My point was just that with no pash rush, you are dead w/out good cover corners, because all QB’s (even JP Loss-man) can pick apart a secondary if they can just sit there.
that’s why you use that money for pass rushers, not secondary guys.
there isn’t a pass rusher to be had in free agency, or a big sure-fire one in this year’s draft (Maybin or Brown in the right scheme…maybe). With that being the case, the Raiders overspent (just like last year) for a player they needed to have
February 20th, 2009 at 10:56 am
there’s julius peppers (tho i think he’s overrated) and albert haynesworth. then again, they decided to give tommy kelley, haynesworth money so…
god are the raiders dumb.
