Hunter S. Thompson Remembered
Video February 21st. 2009, 2:50pm
After yesterday’s PM Roundup, I got a pretty sizable response from other Hunter S. Thompson fans - most of whom were considering some Wild Turkey for their Friday night drink of choice. On the advice of many of the e-mails, I am in fact blogging today under the influence of performance enhancers.
If you’re interested in reading Hunter’s Hey Rube columns, they were compiled and published as “Hey Rube: Blood Sport, the Bush Doctrine, and the Downward Spiral of Dumbness Modern History from the Sports Desk.” (Available on Amazon) While it doesn’t appear that ESPN has a proper working archive, old columns do exist online. You can read the first column Google brings up from the Page 2 days, XFL, R.I.P and then click on other columns on the side.
Of course, Hey Rube was far from his best work and it was done in his last years. He has a number of collections available in big thick paperbacks. And there are a ton of fan sites and blogs. And then there are the documentaries - most recently, Gonzo: The Life and Work of Dr. Hunter S. Thompson. (I also recommend Breakfast With Hunter and the accompanying When I Die.) Do yourself a favor and educate yourself. After the jump, Hunter’s appearance on Late Night with Conan O’Brien.

Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail ‘72 literally changed my life. It is THE reason I’m addicted to politics now and will be forever.

Watching that made me appreciate more how good a job Johnny Depp did in portraying Thompson in the movie Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. Awesome stuff.

I’m interested in seeing how The Rum Diary comes out now that they’re really making it.

Bill Murray was probably better in Where The Buffalo Roam. Both performances were excellent though.

There should probably be a /bsanders tag there, but its true.

I have never seen Where the Buffalo Roam. I’ll have to see if I can track it down and watch it sometime.

After watching the Conan video, it looked like a dry run for the day he shot himself

CRM - Props for mentioning the new Rum movie. Depp signed on crazy early…cannot wait to see how it comes out.

Just a question (bsanders could probably answer this):
What was the last movie that Johnny Depp appeared in without playing a “character” (costume/make-up, etc?) Blow, maybe (and even that he was made up half the time)?
Check out the 2nd movie listed on his IMDB here as rumored and then follow the link to that movie for possible cast. Like a bad acid trip!!

Hmm, probably depends on how you define “character.” In The Libertine he was just dressed up in period attire, fucking everyone and passing STD’s along. He really only was “in costume” at the end of Secret Window. Maybe Once Upon a Time in Mexico? Save for the ironic t-shirts he sported throughout it.
Rich Eisen with the line of the day: “We got tight ends stretchin, people!”

Are they finally making it? That’s been talked about for years. Is Josh Harnett still in it?

Hey Rube(sucker) was pretty weak compared to some fear and loathing books and strange and terrible saga.
Thanks for the link to amazon CRM. You capitalist swine. go pimp your neo-con agenda elsewhere. Ever heard of a library? you dipshit poo-butt motherlovin cuntbubble.

I don’t know much about the production of The Rum Diary other than they were rumored to be starting production in Puerto Rico sometime this Spring. I am, however, unbelievably psyched for Mann’s Public Enemies with Depp and Bale. Even when Mann stumbles (cough, Miami Vice) his stuff is still more interesting than most of the stuff out there.

Library? TBL told me they all went bankrupt and shut their doors.

Thompson was a 9/11 truther and devoted Che fan.
Fuck that guy.

Hunter and I were buds in high school and he told me once that he thought CRM and Mike NYC were both gay and queefed in each others’ mouths.

I’m convinced Rum Diary won’t ever be made because Depp continues to make horrible Tim Burton movies. See: Alice in Wonderland. Is that a movie that needs to be made? No. And surprise surprise, Helena Bonham Carter is in it.
Campaign Trail 72 is one of the best political books ever written, and reading it during the primaries last year was perfect because the elections were so incredibly similar.
And Where the Buffalo Roam sucked, Thompson hated it too. Murray and Boyle were great but the screenplay was just terrible.
