The Five Most Hated Players In the NCAA Tournament
College Basketball March 17th. 2009, 11:45am
1. Eric Devendorf, Syracuse. Allegedly hit a female student in face late last year, and was nearly suspended for the entire season by the University. The neck tattoos don’t help, nor does the endless preening after three-pointers. Great shooter, but his antics at the Big East tournament vaulted him to the top spot. The word “punk” definitely applies. These guys dislike him greatly.
2. Tyler Hansbrough, UNC. Hated because the media fawns over him (Jay Bilas going down on him at the end of the Louisville Elite 8 game last year may have been the tipping point), and because he seems to get all of the calls from the refs. Guilt-by-success seems to apply here.
3. Greg Paulus, Duke. Probably had this honor the last few years. He’s in the same mold as Chris Collins and Steve Wojo. Spunky, undersized, and a streaky shooter. Except he’s not nearly as good. It didn’t help that Dick Vitale was hyping this kid since his high school days (sort of like how Beano Cook hyped Ron Powlus at Notre Dame), and then he showed up on campus and basically underachieved in the first three years (3-3 in the NCAA tournament), and then lost his starting job this year. There’s no way this guy was the 11th best high school recruit in 2005.
4. Hasheem Thabeet, UConn. Talked some junk in the offseason about Harangody and Hansbrough, which didn’t endear him to many, especially since he really hadn’t accomplished anything. Then, the 7-foot-3 center backed up his play with a strong season – he was the co-Player of the Year in the Big East – but notoriously flopped head-to-head against the much shorter DeJuan Blair of Pitt. Most folks chuckle at the idea of Thabeet being considered a top three pick in the 2009 draft; people relish calling him a bust and overrated.
5. Jon Scheyer, Duke. There’s a website dedicated exclusively to the many faces he makes. If you ask Maryland fans whom they hate most, Scheyer may be No. 1 … perhaps on the level of JJ Redick.
And before you ask, no, we haven’t missed any players on the West Coast. It’s just a down year for hoops on the left coast – their highest seed is Washington (4). The midwest has two young teams (Kansas and Michigan State), a largely unknown team (Missouri), and a player who keeps getting roughed up that you can’t help but feel bad for the guy (Blake Griffin and Oklahoma).

“We” sure do hate a lot of white basketball players.
March 17th, 2009 at 11:55 am
It’s Devendorf and then everyone else. I don’t know or care about his off the court trouble but I’ve never watched someone on the court that is this so easy to dislike. A douche of the highest order.
March 17th, 2009 at 11:55 am
Devendorf is constantly reliving the moment when B-Rabbit flips the script on members of the Free World.
March 17th, 2009 at 11:57 am
tried this in ballin but got no response,
R, HR, RBI, SB, OPS, W, SV, K, ERA, WHIP
Thanks.

Every announcer I’ve heard talk about Paulus says he is one of the nicest players off the court, he actually seems like a good kid. As opposed to say Redick, who liked to piss on girls after fucking them.

Also, I love the stones it takes the second guess recruiting rankings from four years ago. This is the first time a player has failed to live up to expectations.
March 17th, 2009 at 12:00 pm
Of course this is the case. If it were 4 out of 5 black guys on this list, you would be called racist. Kind of like if you didn’t vote for Barry Obama you are racist and didn’t want… CHANGE!!!!
/sincere

you know any of the ‘victims?’ did he warn them about the golden shower? did they request it?

There is a pretty good youtube video about Devendorf being an honor roll student off the court, but on the court he is intensely dislikable. My buddies call him 8 mile. And we’re all SU fans.
March 17th, 2009 at 12:03 pm
It was just a nasty rumor. Still he had several drug incidents too, he wasn’t an upstanding citizen like the media loves to make white basketball players out to be.
March 17th, 2009 at 12:03 pm
I’d replace Thabeet with B.J. Mullens.
Then that makes it creamy across the board.
March 17th, 2009 at 12:04 pm
White, Black, Orange, I think we can all agree that Devendorf is the most hated douche and shouldn’t even be playing right now.

March 17th, 2009 at 12:09 pm
BJ Mullens is hated?
March 17th, 2009 at 12:10 pm
i doubt the average basketball fans has even heard of mullens.
he’s like the darko of the 2008 HS class
March 17th, 2009 at 12:11 pm
nice token black player in thabeet tbl…”no i dont hate white people i have thabeet!”….i havent heard of thabeet(a little but not P.O.Y or anything) or devendorf before this season hanbrough has managed what only a few players have managed and that is what i like to call the 4 YEARS OF HATE!. none of the other guys can approach him on that level with the exception maybe of scheyer and then he doesnt because he doesnt put up the stats that hansbrough does. hansbrough is by far the most hated dude.
March 17th, 2009 at 12:11 pm
The funniest part about this is Devendorf is from BAY FUCKING CITY. Bay City is nowhere close to being 8 Mile.
March 17th, 2009 at 12:13 pm
Don’t you have to be moderately successful to be hated?
March 17th, 2009 at 12:14 pm
“I love you, man” has to be the gayest(nttawwt) movie made this decade, and that includes “Chuck and Larry” and “Spiderman 3″.
March 17th, 2009 at 12:17 pm
where’s lil romeo on this list?
March 17th, 2009 at 12:18 pm
I don’t hate Hansbrough at all. I still don’t think he is that hated. Yeah he gets a lot of pub, but he’s a very unhateable guy.
It’s Devendorf by miles and miles. Not even close. And then of course, anyone at Duke.
March 17th, 2009 at 12:19 pm
Judging by this website, I’m not so sure that Stephen Curry shouldn’t be on the list.
March 17th, 2009 at 12:21 pm
It seems I am in the minority in actually liking Devendorf?
+1000000000 to Hansbrough though. I love UNC, but that kid. He makes UNC fucking unwatchable. His NBA ceiling is Brian Cardinal, at best. Hustle doesn’t work in the NBA like it does in the NCAA.
March 17th, 2009 at 12:21 pm
I’m suprised Vasquez isn’t on here. He’s hated by both opposing fans and his own.
March 17th, 2009 at 12:22 pm
No Grievis Vasquez? Please replace Thabeet with him.
I also nominate Scottie Reynolds, Venoy Overton (Washington), BJ Mullens and anybody on Tennessee,
March 17th, 2009 at 12:23 pm
Meant to preface my Curry comment with “WERE HE IN THE TOURNAMENT…”
March 17th, 2009 at 12:23 pm
Jay – Curry isn’t in the NCAA tournament. But yeah, he would have been included
Wow. Is that ceiling located below or above Mark Madsen?
a punk, surely. the guy already said he’s putting his name in the nba draft. who does before the regular season is over?
March 17th, 2009 at 12:25 pm
what is deplorable about scottie reynolds? from an oklahoma fan, i could understand your anger …
i do agree that tenn is littered with punks. bruce pearl’s kinda guy. i really wanted to include someone on memphis (dozier?) but those guys are mostly nobodies
March 17th, 2009 at 12:27 pm
Above. Cardinal did enough to get a payday once. Madsen is more famous for ‘dancing’ after a championship he watched with the rest of America.
March 17th, 2009 at 12:28 pm
Somebody who is honest? I’d rather have someone come out and say they’re gone than someone who bullshits all year when everyone knows they’re gone (looking at you Oden).
I just read a case about Bruce Pearl ratting out Illinois for giving Deon Thomas money, hilarious.
March 17th, 2009 at 12:31 pm
What the. Leave Pearl alone.
I will agree though, our team is full of chest pounding punks who are soft as hell.
March 17th, 2009 at 12:32 pm
I don’t really buy into Vasquez definitely going to the draft yet. He and Gary have grown really close this past year. Depending on MDs success in the tourney this year, I could see him staying for his senior year. If he developed a jumper, he’d be nasty.
March 17th, 2009 at 12:35 pm
Have you seen him play? He shoots 3s and spasms out looking for fouls. Takes prat falls and throws up ridiculous shots. Add all that into the hardon East coast media has for him and I dislike him for all the same reasons everyone dislikes Duke kids.
March 17th, 2009 at 12:38 pm
Yeah, just call him the Bay City Roller(s).
Oh, that’s right, they weren’t from Bay City.
Now I’m totally confused….
March 17th, 2009 at 12:48 pm
Willie Warren could probably make this list with how much he runs his mouth, this is going back to his high school days up to this year though. Capel might have reeled him in though because I haven’t seen too many quotes from him.
March 17th, 2009 at 12:52 pm
BJ Mullens belongs on there somewhere.
March 17th, 2009 at 12:56 pm
Devan Dumes from IU deserves mention. He was ejected and suspended when he elbowed a MSU player in the nuts. It was his second flagrant elbow of the game. There were other games before then when he couldn’t control his emotions and elbows.
March 17th, 2009 at 12:58 pm
racist
March 17th, 2009 at 1:13 pm
Kyle Singler can slide into Thabeet’s spot. That kid is miserable, and every time you see him on TV he has that shit-eating grin which is usually followed by an expletive or two. Also, he has never ever committed a real foul. Never. Not him.

The Five Most Hated Players In the NCAA Tournament
According to?
March 17th, 2009 at 1:30 pm
my guess would be the author of the post
March 17th, 2009 at 1:48 pm
I think Bay City has more bars per square foot than any place in the country.
Also, I think Psycho T has to be #1. I lean to UNC over Duke. I don’t watch college basketball before the tournament, and I still don’t like him.
March 17th, 2009 at 2:32 pm
Actually, BJ Mullens is immensely hated…by OSU fans.
March 17th, 2009 at 2:45 pm
Blake Griffin makes my top 5 easy. He’s no Devendorf, but I feel he gets pretty damn close.
March 17th, 2009 at 2:50 pm
Thabeet definitely belongs on this list. He’s way too soft to be talking junk like he did in the offseason. I’ve seen him disappear way too many times this season when the opposition got physical with him.
March 17th, 2009 at 4:00 pm
Once again, Scheyer is not given his due. He should be #1, because he makes funny faces.
