The St. Louis Rams are on the Clock
NFL March 24th. 2009, 9:00am
With nearly a month to the NFL draft, we’ve now seen our third story about whose name is going to be called first on April 25: Baylor OL Jason Smith. First it was Georgia QB Matthew Stafford, and post-combine it was LB Aaron Curry. Assuming this latest report is accurate, two significant questions immediately come to mind: How far does Stafford fall, and what will the Rams do with the No. 2 pick?
The Free Press reports today that Stafford the Wonderlic-standout will work out for the Lions a week from today, and if you want to attempt to read between the lines on some of the quotes from members of the organization, you may come away thinking Stafford won’t go first and get Matt Ryan money. Calvin Johnson weeps. Mel Kiper feverishly scribbles a diatribe directed at the Lions for not taking Stafford.
If Baylor indeed goes first, we’re guessing Stafford could plunge all the way to 10 (San Francisco).
The Rams have Bulger, the Chiefs have Cassel, the Seahawks have Hasselbeck (sure, they could think long term, but not when they’re contending for a playoff spot), the Browns have Quinn, the Bengals have Palmer, the Raiders have invested too much in Russell, the Jags have Garrard, and the 49ers have … an opening, really.
St. Louis saw UVA OL Eugene Monroe this weekend and came away impressed, news that is sure to thrill Stephen Jackson and perhaps every bone in Bulger’s fragile body.

Monroe has to be the pick for the Rams. I could see the Jags being inept enough to pull the trigger on Stafford, but with the way their line crumbled last year you’d think they have to give him another year to prove himself. And earn all that money. And beat Chron’s!

Sorry, pet peeve.

How does UVA consistently churn out top 10 picks yet never even contend in the pitiful ACC? Have to figure they take OL. Was Jake Long any good last year, I dont think I saw St Louis play once.

Jake Long plays for the Dolphins. Chris Long plays for the Rams and had a decent rookie year for a pass rusher. No pass rusher has really made a big impact as a rookie since Freeney and Peppers. He was certainly more effective than Vernon Gholston.

I don’t think the Rams, Jags and Seahawks should be content with their QB situations. I don’t see any of those 3 QBs winning a Super Bowl anytime soon.

Seems like years since Bulger was considered “good”, that’s Jacksons team now.
O-line would make sense but I wouldn’t put it past them to draft Stafford and slap a bunch of nobodies in front of him.

let’s leave Gholston’s name out of this, please. i dont need to go 3 rounds with OSU fans at 920 am.
i think the seahawks and jags could easily get back to the playoffs next season with the QBs they have. rams are garbage, but bulger’s only 32

It’s not about winning a Super Bowl. It’s about being competitive enough in a cost effective manner to sell tickets and merchandise. Plus, if you can win 2 SBs with Big Ben, then obviously you don’t need top flight talent.

@Coop: It’s because they have one good player every year, two coming up, and the rest of the team blows.

The Seahawks could def get back to the playoffs but would get bounced in the first round.
Houshmazilla and what the hell else?

Well to be fair I was more effective than Vernon.
BraveSrRob, they should be better, there’s a ton of talent around there and Charlottesville is an awesome town. And the ACC blows.

With all the turnover among NFL playoff teams, I wouldn’t count the Seahawks or Jags out of next year’s playoff hunt. The Rams are a mess, and will likely be drafting in the top 10 again next season, so why not get a really good left tackle prospect now and wait on a better-rated QB prospect than Stafford? Besides, if you can keep Bulger upright he can still be effective for another year. Key phrase being keeping him upright.

Top tier talent tends to go to other schools, either NFL draft factories (OSU) or schools that are good football schools and in awesome climates (Florida, USC). Cville can’t compete with that because, while the weather’s nice, it’s not as nice as the other places and the school’s a basketball school.
Plus, there isn’t anything to do in Cville other than to go out drinking or havine house parties. You can go hiking in the surrounding areas, but I don’t know how much of a plus that is for potential football recruits.

I will inject rum straight into my veins on draft day if the Lions take Stafford or anyone but an OT. I will drink straight from the bottle (in celebration, of course), if they trade out of the top pick and pick anyone except a QB with like the No. 4 pick.

Correction (so you all don’t think I’m crazy):
I will inject rum straight into my veins on draft day if the Lions take Stafford or anyone but an OT with the top pick.

it’s not as nice as the other places and the school’s a soccer school.

i love how the draft is on my birthday this year…wake up, load up the bong, and celebrate 25 years on this earth while watching the browns fuck up the draft. doesn’t get any better.

You drink rum, meth is for injecting, geesh, you would think someone from (assuming) Detroit would know how to shoot meth. Next you’ll say you have no idea what a foreclosed home looks like.

Everything that I am reading (Mort, AJC, Peter King) is saying that Stafford is going #1 unless he doesn’t perform well in his workout for the Lions on the 31st. This is why I love the draft. GM’s and coaches let little things get out for no other reason than to confuse everyone. They tell the reporters what they want to reporters to write. It’s as simple as that.

Coop247 – I am not from Detroit. Injecting rum straight into the veins fucks you up beyond belief. I saw a kid do it in college with vodka. It surpasses your digestive system and goes straight into your bloodstream. FUCKS. YOU. UP.
Anyway, it was a joke.
