Gary Sheffield is a Free Agent
1-liner, Baseball March 31st. 2009, 2:15pmGary Sheffield: The mercurial DH was released by the Tigers this morning. He’s one homer short of 500. Detroit will pay him $14 million to not play a game in a Tigers uniform. Clearly, this was money well spent. (Freep)

I’d like to see him in Boston just to see if he strangles a member of the media.

The economy is great if you’re Willis or Sheffield. A combined $24 million this year to do jack shit.
Wait ’til Congress hears about this!

Thank god people still buy Little Caeser’s pizza during these tough times, or Mike Ilitch would be a broke summa’ bitch.
Sheff was a good signing at first. He was healthy his first year and really produced, but the second half of 2007 and most of last year he was half the player he’s been in his career.
The Tigers are my team. I’m glad he’s off the roster because it frees up some space for Leyland to play with the DH spot (Thames) and give Maggs, Guillen and Cabrera some days off on the field and work some younger guys into the rotation for better defense (Larish, Thomas, Rayburn). I’m not really sad to see Sheff go. He was more of a burden than a help.

Not worrying about the money, this is a good baseball move. Sheffield is basically done. He is just a decoy and a power hitter who only draws walks and acts as a decoy is no longer a power hitter.
He wants to play the outfield, which will only further his decline. Let him find a team that will allow him to play the field and say hello to the DL.
Give some at bats to Thames, let Guillen DH. Let the kid they just got from Atlanta (Josh Anderson) play some outfield and let Clete Thomas or Brent Clevlen make the team.

Detroit just makes it too easy for the rest of the AL Central. Can’t wait until they have to trade Cabrera for 10 cents on the dollar.

What are you talking about? Not having Willis in the rotation and Sheffield in the daily lineup makes Detroit a better team.

a power hitter who only draws walks I’ll grant that it is expected that a power hitter will do more than walk, but is getting on base a lot the worse thing in the world?
Full disclosure, I have not looked at his OBP from last season.
