In a Major Stunner, Bears Trade For Jay Cutler
NFL April 2nd. 2009, 5:34pm
Just walked in the door and here’s a whopper:
The Bears acquired quarterback Jay Cutler today for No. 1 draft picks in 2009 and 2010, a No. 3 pick this year and Kyle Orton, the Sun-Times has learned.
Wow.

major shout-out to SG, who sent me a g-chat PM with this news just seconds before i was about to hop in the shower. this is why i can’t go play pickup hoops for 90 mins in the afternoon.
im a slave to the cpu.

Congratulations to Jerry Angelo for actually going out and doing something big this year. Quite frankly, I’m happy we gave up first round draft picks. Take a look at the history of Angelo’s first round picks. Almost every single one was a bust.
April 2nd, 2009 at 5:38 pm
Yea we gave up alot for him but you know what our history of No.1 Picks in the draft are horrible.

Strong-arm & fairly accurate QB’s MAKE WR(s) much better players
Put a Very Good Running Game, Decent Special teams & Good Defense…
And you’re building a foundation for Long-Term Success for SB-Chasing!!!

HOLY FUCK!
April 2nd, 2009 at 5:40 pm
The Broncos might not win 4 games next year.
Somewhere, Mike Shanahan laughs his ass off.
April 2nd, 2009 at 5:41 pm
have fun throwing to shitty cornerbacks cutlerfucker
April 2nd, 2009 at 5:42 pm
and patiently waits for Jerra to fire Wade
April 2nd, 2009 at 5:43 pm
Good move for both teams but the Bears probably gave up too much. I think Neckbeard can be successful in a different town/system. Now we get to see what Cutler is made of because he has one of the worst receiving corps in the League and a terrible offensive scheme.
April 2nd, 2009 at 5:43 pm
how did the Bears do this offseason? how are the WRs?

foolish, foolish move by the Broncos, but their idiocy is the Bears fortune. so basically, after the draft, the best team in the division (Minny) will have the worst QB.
yup, i’d take stafford over tjack/sage
April 2nd, 2009 at 5:51 pm
Let me remind all of you who Jerry Angelo has drafted in the first round since 2001:
1. David Terrell
2. Marc Colombo
3. REX GROSSMAN & Michael Haynes (Never heard of him, right?)
4. Tommie Harris
5. Cedric Benson
6. Greg Olsen (even though we already had a great TE in Des Clark)
7. Chris Williams
He could have given up 4 first round draft picks and I would have been fine with it.
April 2nd, 2009 at 5:51 pm
Disagree. I think they fleeced the Bears.
April 2nd, 2009 at 5:52 pm
/High Fives SG cause we see eye to eye
April 2nd, 2009 at 5:53 pm
The Broncos are going to suffer, but they got a shitload in return. Two 1st, a 3rd and an serviceable (?) QB. 12th and 18th are good first round picks, and a 3rd next year. If they go all defense with those picks they can vastly improve their defense in a hurry.
April 2nd, 2009 at 5:53 pm
How so?
April 2nd, 2009 at 5:54 pm
Oh, make no mistake — the Bears gave up way, way too much, even for a franchise QB.
And SG, prior incompetence by Angelo (draft picks) does not excuse the current incompetence exhibited here.
April 2nd, 2009 at 5:54 pm
im 26 years old so i never got the chance to see mcmahon play. Was he worth a damn? When was the last time the bears had a good qb? Never?
April 2nd, 2009 at 5:54 pm
forte is doing his happy dance
April 2nd, 2009 at 5:55 pm
My question is which report is correct in terms of the trade details because it is kinda significant who gets the 3rd round pick:
ESPN has the Bears giving up quarterback Kyle Orton and first-round picks in 2009 and 2010
While both PFT and Sun-Times, has two first-round picks and quarterback Kyle Orton with Bronco giving back a 3rd.
April 2nd, 2009 at 5:56 pm
Two 1st rd this year, two 1st next year (with one likely being top 5) and an extra 3rd? Damn. That’s insane. Not to mention next years draft will have better QBs.
April 2nd, 2009 at 5:57 pm
yes. the girl knows football
April 2nd, 2009 at 5:57 pm
This sounds more reasonable
April 2nd, 2009 at 5:57 pm
agreed.
Broncos definitely got great value out of Cutler (11th pick). McDaniel can revamp his defense within 2 years.
April 2nd, 2009 at 5:58 pm
forgot to mention that ESPN has the Bears getting a 3rd round pick from the Broncos
April 2nd, 2009 at 5:58 pm
Mike, in no way shape or form did the Bears give up too much. They just got a proven QB who could be the face of the franchise for years to come in exchange for “what if” draft picks. Do you know how long it’s been since the Bears have had a franchise QB?
P.S. Orlando Pace is rumored to be seconds away from signing a contract with the Bears.
April 2nd, 2009 at 6:00 pm
the bears defense heard the news and had to go to the bathroom to rub out their hard-ons
April 2nd, 2009 at 6:00 pm
This sucks. My chance of defending my fantasy championship just went to shit. Now, I have to watch my franchise QB lead the shithole Chicago offense. Oh well, at least I still have Fitzgerald.
April 2nd, 2009 at 6:00 pm
Hester is gonna catch some bombs now.
April 2nd, 2009 at 6:01 pm
I’m a huge Cutler fan. I’m just hoping they’ll be able to surround him with some decent WRs w/o those draft picks now.
Not that it matters, but his fantasy stock also takes a huge hit.
April 2nd, 2009 at 6:01 pm
or get alot of PI calls
/truth’d
April 2nd, 2009 at 6:01 pm
If the Bears don’t make the playoffs this year what’s the chance they bring in Mike Shanahan next year? I am going with 80%.
April 2nd, 2009 at 6:02 pm
I’ m curious what the Bears thinking was here. I actually like the trade for both teams, but if the Bears hold out do the Broncos eventually take a 1st, 3rd and Orton for Cutler instead of the extra number 1 or would someone swoop in with something better? I doubt anyone else would be offering two number ones. The Bears could have gambled and waited for the price to go down, but obviously they didn’t want to risk it.
HEre’s the question you have to ask. Is Jay cutler better than Leon Hall (18 pick in 2007) and someone like Rashard Mendenhall (number 22 pick in 2008)?
the answer has to be yes.
April 2nd, 2009 at 6:02 pm
Orton played well before he was hurt. You could put Joe Montana on that Bears offense and he would struggle, they’ve got nothing to throw to.
April 2nd, 2009 at 6:02 pm
OH MY!
/Verne Lundquist
April 2nd, 2009 at 6:03 pm
Definitely gave up way too much. A first and a third would have sufficed. Two firsts? Lunacy.
Still a good move for both teams though.
April 2nd, 2009 at 6:03 pm
P.S. Orlando Pace is rumored to be seconds away from signing a contract with the Bears.
He’s still in the league?
I agree with YYSA, Mole and Mike… too pricey.
April 2nd, 2009 at 6:04 pm
Did he sign a contract extension along with the trade? Lets not jump to conclusions and see if the Bears can outbid Dan Snyder when the Salary cap goes away.
April 2nd, 2009 at 6:04 pm
Billy Wade?
April 2nd, 2009 at 6:05 pm
YEA!!!! This can work.
April 2nd, 2009 at 6:06 pm
clayton is a idiot he said “you could debate that cutler is the most talented qb in the nfc north with him edging out rodgers.”
there is no debate. in my opinion. cutler is better than rodgers substatially. if he had the talent that cutler had the packers would have pushed favre out 5 yrs ago
April 2nd, 2009 at 6:07 pm
the bears are definitely better this evening than they were this morning. i don’t think anyone can conclude that Broncos screwed the Bears at this point.

Since when was being a huge alcoholic make you an huge “intangibles” guy?
April 2nd, 2009 at 6:08 pm
You people are making me mental with your “the Bears gave up too much” bullshit. This was a deal that required a lucrative return to the Broncos, so they HAD to offer first rounders or another team would have swooped in and done the same. You’re assuming the Bears would have been successful with their draft picks and that’s a HUGE assumption.
April 2nd, 2009 at 6:08 pm
And the hate from the homer Schlereth
April 2nd, 2009 at 6:09 pm
Cutler has almost as much talent as Jeff George.
April 2nd, 2009 at 6:12 pm
two random thoughts without reading the comments:
1) even though the haul is much, much less, why can’t this be denver’s ‘herschel walker’ deal?
2) no more ‘cutler doesn’t have a defense’ bullshit … next, the argument will be, ‘he doesn’t have a WR!’
April 2nd, 2009 at 6:15 pm
Wow, Floyd is staying in USC.
Guess Arizona didn’t pony up enough money to get the next OJ Mayo…
April 2nd, 2009 at 6:16 pm
The only way the Bears DIDN’T give up too much is if somehow Cutler helps the Cubs win a WS.
April 2nd, 2009 at 6:17 pm
But he has TEs!!
April 2nd, 2009 at 6:17 pm
Denver was asking for a minimum of two 1st rounders anyway.
And the Bears last really good QB: Sid Luckman. Yeah, its sad. McMahon would have been very good, but too injury prone.
April 2nd, 2009 at 6:18 pm
ESPN should’ve led the 6 p.m. SportsCenter with the resignation of Chris Mortenson, who is the most clueless of the “big name” NFL reporters. Not one time did Mortenson mention Chicago on his list of teams that would trade or consider trading for Cutler. He touted Washington and Tampa Bay as if one was the shoo-in to trade for Cutler. Then news breaks today about Chicago pulling the string. What kind of shoddy journalism is this? Mortenson fucking blows.
April 2nd, 2009 at 6:18 pm
Yeah…It scares me, but I don’t think it will be on that epic of a scale.
That said, I’m skeptical about Cutler having success in Chicago.
April 2nd, 2009 at 6:18 pm
he dont have a wr but he does have pro bowl rb who will make it easier for the wrs.
tbl dont rain on my,tampa’s and sg’s parade.
/high five sg?
//high five tampa!
April 2nd, 2009 at 6:19 pm
And in a shocking move, the Broncos bring in Jake Plummer as Orton’s beard back-up.
April 2nd, 2009 at 6:21 pm
He is somewhere between the 14th and 22nd best QB in the NFL.
April 2nd, 2009 at 6:21 pm
Giants traded two first round picks and a third for Eli. how’d that workout? Oh yeah, they won the Super Bowl. everyone wants to compare big name players traded for draft picks to the Herschel Walker trade. There was ONE Herschel trade. No one has duplicated that kind of move since.
April 2nd, 2009 at 6:21 pm
Um, TBL, the Bears’ D sucks.
April 2nd, 2009 at 6:22 pm
True, but Rivers is better than Eli.
April 2nd, 2009 at 6:23 pm
Before I say anything, I don’t know shit about NFL.
But the Bears D is top 5 in the NFL. Special teams, awesome. O-line, no idea? Good TE’s also.
Give up the picks for proven talent. Cutler was a great pick up. Now go get a #1 WR and they are a top 3 NFC team.
April 2nd, 2009 at 6:31 pm
the Broncos D did blow, and he made Eddie Royal a fucking superstar and shit load of money. He’ll do the same for who ever the Bears take in Round 2.
April 2nd, 2009 at 6:32 pm
As SportsGal pointed out Bears front office terrible while Ernie Acorsi and Jerry Reese have been two of the best over the last 5 years.
I still don’t get why a team that prides itself on knocking opponents out of close games via defense and a running game makes this move.
April 2nd, 2009 at 6:33 pm
wrong. when a defense is the on the field for 75% of the game they get tired…hence the late game collapses.
April 2nd, 2009 at 6:34 pm
Thats not possible when you are not in the NFC East
/ESPN’d
April 2nd, 2009 at 6:34 pm
If you’re living in 2006, yes, that’s true. They were 21st in yards allowed per game last season and 16th in scoring defense. Their defense is the definition of mediocre, yet it still has those “big names” on it people remember from their Super Bowl year so its reputation is inflated.
April 2nd, 2009 at 6:34 pm
“2) no more ‘cutler doesn’t have a defense’ bullshit … next, the argument will be, ‘he doesn’t have a WR!’”
So it’s “bullshit” that the Broncos defense sucked? Because from what I recall watching, it was pretty fucking terrible.
April 2nd, 2009 at 6:35 pm
im just glad we get to hear what mike ditka has to say about this trade because he was the coach almost 20 yrs ago and we give a fuck. thank you espn.
April 2nd, 2009 at 6:35 pm
He’ll do the same for who ever the Bears take in Round 2.
Is that because 1st year WRs have such a high success rate?
April 2nd, 2009 at 6:35 pm
eh…no way to predict if Rivers would have handled it with the Giants the way Eli did. Remember, Eli was starting halfway through his rookie season and then won the division the next year. Rivers sat for two years. Giants wanted someone right away. plus not everyone can play QB in NY. Like Favre couldn’t.
April 2nd, 2009 at 6:36 pm
Yep. Not to mention the NFC in 2006 was god awful
April 2nd, 2009 at 6:36 pm
bears rush D was 6th best in the last
bears pass D was the 3rd worst.
i haven’t checked to see what kind of injuries they had last season on the defensive side of the ball.
2006 – 3rd best scoring D in the league
April 2nd, 2009 at 6:37 pm
The Bears gave up a lot for Culter but it is not like they left the cupboard bare on draft pick http://www.chicagobears.com/2009draftpicks.asp:
They still have their 2nd and another 3rd this year plus extra fifth from the trade. I say get a WR with the 2nd ( their should still be some decent ones left in this draft at spot) and shore up the D with the rest of picks.
Plus for team that was ranked 21 in Defense last year and 26 in offense last year was still only 1 game away from the playoffs and just added “hopefully” a franchise QB
April 2nd, 2009 at 6:37 pm
“Is that because 1st year WRs have such a high success rate?”
Wasn’t Eddie Royal a 1st year WR?
April 2nd, 2009 at 6:38 pm
Sparty that is with Baseball in NY. not football. In football it is not everyone can play QB for Dallas.
April 2nd, 2009 at 6:39 pm
another factor: December weather in Chicago. home games down the stretch run probably are not favorable to a QB.
i’d like to see passing stats over the last few years for home and visiting QBs in chicago. if i have the time, i’ll check it out tonight
April 2nd, 2009 at 6:39 pm
In 2006, Marvin Harrison was the best WR in the NFL. Things change. The Bears need an entire new secondary and need to improve their pass rush. This trade makes their offense a lot better, but it hinders their ability to renew their defense.
April 2nd, 2009 at 6:40 pm
TBL your website/server sucks ass.
The Bears SECONDARY sucks. And I blame the defensive struggles the past two seasons on the loss of Rivera.
April 2nd, 2009 at 6:41 pm
As opposed to December weather in Denver?
/nice try
April 2nd, 2009 at 6:43 pm
and here i thought someone was going to make the joke that no one can play football in NJ.
April 2nd, 2009 at 6:44 pm
Urlacher demanding more money even though he fucking sucks and never steps up as a leader hinders their ability to renew their defense. And keep in mind Jerry Angelo has a history of finding defensive diamonds in the rough with later round draft picks.
April 2nd, 2009 at 6:45 pm
bsanders stop and take a refreshing drink of this…because you’re getting a little low on hateramins. i love ya like a play cousin but the bears have turned themselves into playoff contenders
April 2nd, 2009 at 6:45 pm
oops tbl, I misunderstood your comment
/tail between legs
April 2nd, 2009 at 6:45 pm
uhh yea. there is a huge difference between about 500′ elevation and 5000′ expecially when at the 500′ elevation you are dealing with horrible wind.
April 2nd, 2009 at 6:46 pm
Wasn’t Eddie Royal a 1st year WR?
He and DeShaun Jackson were the only two in the league that had impact seasons. I’d say that equals a low success rate for 1st year WRs.
April 2nd, 2009 at 6:47 pm
got fucked by tbl’s server
bsanders, obviously, i don’t know the NFL. But in my opinion i think they are good enough to be at least a top 5 NFC team. I did get second in my fantasy league this past year.
April 2nd, 2009 at 6:47 pm
pssh. Giants create their own wind.
/”Open the doors!”
April 2nd, 2009 at 6:47 pm
No doubt, but top-flight 4-3 pass rushers are hard to find later on in the draft. If they can get some safety help in the draft and/or Tillman and Vasher can rebound, they could be a top-10 defense again. I do like bringing in Pace for a year to give Williams more time to settle in on the left side. Playing in the NFC and not drawing the AFC South this year, there’s no reason the Bears can’t be an 11-win team.
April 2nd, 2009 at 6:48 pm
Thats not really true. The Giants SWAPPED 1st round picks in 2004. They didn’t give up an extra number 1. The trade was
Giants get Manning
Chargers get Rivers, 1st in 2005, 3rd in 2004 and 5th in 2005.
In this case the Bears are giving up an extra number one pick for Cutler. They aren’t getting the Broncos number one pick in return.
April 2nd, 2009 at 6:49 pm
Not hating, I just get irritated when TBL brings up numbers from two years ago to support a stance when half the playoff teams in the NFL change each season. I like the Bears, I watch most of their games and I’d like to see them do well. I just think Jerry Angelo and Ron Turner both suck.
April 2nd, 2009 at 6:51 pm
Giants, Cards, Eagles, Panthers, Falcons, hell, I will even say the the Cowboys are still better than the Bears. This was a step in the right direction though.
April 2nd, 2009 at 6:51 pm
Congrats Tampa and SG, guess sportsgal needs to reconsider moving…
April 2nd, 2009 at 6:51 pm
you have redeemed yourself bsanders
April 2nd, 2009 at 6:52 pm
whoops, dont know how i did that
April 2nd, 2009 at 6:52 pm
rs27-they still gave up a 1st round pick, even if they selected it for the chargers. they didn’t give up a player, but orton is just being thrown into the deal.
April 2nd, 2009 at 6:53 pm
cards and falcons are not better than the bears now. the cards d got hot at the right time thats all…and if lovie smith didnt have a monumental brainfart we would have been beat the falcons and in the playoffs
April 2nd, 2009 at 6:53 pm
Their pass defense sucked b/c they had zero pass rush. Couple that with Mike “I’m good but tear my acl every freaking year” Brown, its no wonder their how their season ended. You get production out of the line (looking at you adwale oguneleye, tommie harris) and vasher, brown and company stay on the field…yeah this kind of sucks as a Packers fan
April 2nd, 2009 at 6:53 pm
I am curious to see what happens to Cutlers numbers when he passes only 25 times a game instead of 45.
April 2nd, 2009 at 6:54 pm
Had no idea this was the case. Thanks for the info, ReaderM! The Bears now have picks from the 2nd round, 3rd round, 4th round, two in the 5th, 6th round and two in the 7th. I don’t see how anyone can say they gave up too much.
April 2nd, 2009 at 6:54 pm
I’d be willing to bet decent money both the Cards and Falcons take a step back this year. But the G-Men, Eagles, Panthers and Cowboys should all be better than the Bears, yes. And I think the Vikings, even with Jackson or Rosenfail under center, will win 10 games. I think the Packers have a good shot at 10 wins, too.
April 2nd, 2009 at 6:55 pm
Jersey, I don’t want to move. It’s all about being able to find a job.
April 2nd, 2009 at 6:55 pm
What???? I will give you the Falcons but it is way too early to make that statement about the Cardinals. They are young and could build off of this the way the Giants did.
April 2nd, 2009 at 6:56 pm
bsanders you read my mind
April 2nd, 2009 at 6:56 pm
This week, I agree with Sparty. He’s family to me. so whatever he says, I agree with. GO STATE.
April 2nd, 2009 at 6:57 pm
urlacher you are tool.
April 2nd, 2009 at 6:57 pm
Ha, I love Urlacher’s quote about this trade, he sounds kinda pissed about them trading Orton. This thread alone is exhibit A why the NFL rules America’s sporting landscape.
April 2nd, 2009 at 6:58 pm
The Panthers suck
/fuck Delhomme
April 2nd, 2009 at 6:58 pm
I’d be willing to bet decent money both the Cards and Falcons take a step back this year.
Cards, I could see with the defensive issues, Boldin, etc…but why the falcons? if anything I have them winning the South next year. don’t think ryan will go through a sophomore slump
April 2nd, 2009 at 6:58 pm
of course, the Lions are gonna win at least 6 games this year, half of them coming against the NFC North.
April 2nd, 2009 at 6:59 pm
the falcons are not sneaking up on anyone this year badger
April 2nd, 2009 at 7:03 pm
anyone got a good luck to the injuries that have crippled the bears defense the last two years? did they lose a lot of folks? what happened over the last 2 years to change things?
/troy is on and that awesome beach fight scene is coming up
April 2nd, 2009 at 7:03 pm
they don’t have too, they have the talent. They go after defense in the draft and I say they win 11 or 12 games and take the South
April 2nd, 2009 at 7:03 pm
The Falcons only beat four teams with a winning record last year and they ran Turner into the ground last year, obviously not learning the lesson about the “curse of 370″ they experienced with Jamal Anderson. Their defense is also merely mediocre.
April 2nd, 2009 at 7:06 pm
Mark Anderson was a one-year wonder who can’t play run downs, Harris has been hobbled and not the same player, Tillman and Vasher have been plagued by injuries and inconsistency, Urlacher’s neck/back have brought about a rather swift decline, Manning is not the answer at safety. They currently have a severe lack of the pass rush necessary to play a 4-3 defense.
April 2nd, 2009 at 7:06 pm
and they lost Michael Boley to the Giants.
April 2nd, 2009 at 7:07 pm
and we signed a motivated to prove he isnt washed up orlando pace. again matt forte is probably just grinning ear to ear
April 2nd, 2009 at 7:08 pm
IS THERE NO ONE ELSE?
/bad ass
April 2nd, 2009 at 7:09 pm
the Post is going to skewer the Jets tomorrow for not making a deal to get Cutler.
April 2nd, 2009 at 7:12 pm
Chris Mortenson is fucking dumb. Gives us 7 teams that are interested or will get Cutler and none are the Bears. Nice fucking reporting you HACK.
April 2nd, 2009 at 7:12 pm
bsanders, last year they played the AFC West and the NFC North…two divisions where teams with winning records are in short supply. Give them a shot at the more powerful divisions and then we’ll see.
April 2nd, 2009 at 7:13 pm
Troy? Yikes, that movie’s terrible. First off, bad casting. No one believes Brad Pitt could beat Eric Bana’s ass. Second, the script is cringeworthy. Benioff’s only decent script is 25th Hour, the adaptation of his novel. So far this year he’s wrecked the Wolverine movie, but he’s married to Amanda Peet so every year in his life must be a good one.
April 2nd, 2009 at 7:14 pm
Anyone need to be in last place in their fantasy baseball league?
April 2nd, 2009 at 7:14 pm
*someone to be in last
April 2nd, 2009 at 7:15 pm
Wow. ATL gave the Bears 2 gimme td’s late so it wasn’t like Chicago was in crontrol at all. ATL dominated that game. ATL’s defense is a weakness but I’ll take their offense over Cutler’s Bears all day long. 3 solid WR’s and a pro bowl RB versus no WR’s, Greg Olsen and a decent Running Back.
April 2nd, 2009 at 7:17 pm
Is the new Wolverine movie going to suck bsanders? If so, that’s a bummer because I had high hopes.
April 2nd, 2009 at 7:18 pm
troy is weak (though pitt>bana), but there are 2 cool fight scenes in the first 45 mins. and in the interim, helen of troy is worth looking at.
as well it should. BUT, if im the jets, i dont do that deal. #1s the next two years is too much. i would have done this year’s 2 and 3 and next year’s 1 and 4 or something like that.
April 2nd, 2009 at 7:18 pm
so lovie didnt have a brainfart in that game with the squib kick? if he didnt we would have won that game and made the playoffs.
April 2nd, 2009 at 7:18 pm
i really like how everyone speaks with an English accent in this movie. They also managed to make Diane Kruger look less attractive when she is supposed to be this incredible beauty.
April 2nd, 2009 at 7:19 pm
Just by doing the math the Bears STOLE this pick. This is why:
1) Cutler and this years first round pick cancel out… Seriously, if people knew how good he was going to be he would’ve been a top 3 pick.
2) the basically flip flopped a 1st and third round pick. You know how much money a team saves by giving up their first rounder for a third rounder.
3) Most teams suck at drafting. Colts, Pats, Steelers and maybe Giants are in a league of their own. Might as well get a PROVEN guy.
/MIKE!!!! He’s bangin cocktail waitresses two at a time!!!
April 2nd, 2009 at 7:20 pm
go here to read bsanders review gods. the man knows movies
April 2nd, 2009 at 7:20 pm
Really? maybe the Giants?
April 2nd, 2009 at 7:22 pm
The work print that leaked online was pretty bad. There are some plot contrivances and dialogue that will likely elicit some audience laughter once it hits theaters.
No way, Bana was jacked in that movie and would’ve destroyed him, they just shot it to make Pitt look like a badass. Pitt has a small, 6′ 170 frame normally, there’s only so much you can pack onto that.
April 2nd, 2009 at 7:22 pm
Falcons and Cowboys are going backwards next year. Giants will go to the Super Bowl (and I don’t like them, so it’s not a homer pick)
April 2nd, 2009 at 7:24 pm
i agree.
/total homer
//but it is still the truth.
April 2nd, 2009 at 7:25 pm
call as I see ‘em, Sparty
Cowboys maybe not “backwards”, but no playoffs is what I meant
April 2nd, 2009 at 7:25 pm
and get beat by the patriots.
April 2nd, 2009 at 7:27 pm
I agree. The Falcons have a brutal schedule so 10 wins is the tops with 9 being more realistic and 8 being more likely. They will step back, however, because their defense is bad, not because of the offense. I love how people use the “ATL won’t sneak up on people” line. I’m pretty sure after week 5 or 6 no one sneaks up on anybody.
April 2nd, 2009 at 7:27 pm
“No one believes Brad Pitt could beat Eric Bana’s ass.”
“Fight club isn’t about winning or losing fights. Fight club isn’t about words. You see a guy come to fight club for the first time, and his ass is a loaf of white bread. You see this same guy here six months later, and he looks carved out of wood.”
April 2nd, 2009 at 7:28 pm
you need to turn on FX HD right now. Pitt is a beast in this movie. bana is taller, but not nearly as cut/chiseled
April 2nd, 2009 at 7:29 pm
Next year’s Super Bowl should be a Manning Bowl, I think. With the Colts’ schedule and (hopefully) rejuvenated offensive line, they have a decent shot at the #1 seed. And they’ve beat the Pats 4 out of 5. And they won’t have to travel 2,000 miles to beat Jamal “Coltskiller” WIlliams on the road twice in the same season.
April 2nd, 2009 at 7:29 pm
pitt=roids…hell most actors use roids to get jacked.
April 2nd, 2009 at 7:30 pm
Pretty funny on NFL Network just now: Mike Mayock just said when Ron Turner was at Illinois, he turned Cutler down for a scholarship. We wanted to go there (close to home) and Turner said no. Now Cutler and Turner are reunited at Chicago.
/hope this doesn’t get Jay mad & ask for a trade
April 2nd, 2009 at 7:30 pm
Won as many games as the Cowboys last year.
April 2nd, 2009 at 7:31 pm
High fives all around!
April 2nd, 2009 at 7:31 pm
Now I wish the Bears would have picked up T.O.
April 2nd, 2009 at 7:31 pm
Cut doesn’t = strength. Some peoples’ bodies are just more conducive to vascularity. And you see Pitt’s legs? Those are CGI-ed, not his. Bana is bigger, taller, stronger and – if you’ve seen Chopper – a better actor. Though Pitt is great in 12 Monkeys, Fight Club and Ass. of Jesse James. The rest of his CV I could take or leave.
April 2nd, 2009 at 7:31 pm
*playoff games
April 2nd, 2009 at 7:32 pm
On my way to getting outrageous, six Natural Ice’s gone.
April 2nd, 2009 at 7:33 pm
Are we talking Hector vs Achilles or Bana vs. Pitt?
April 2nd, 2009 at 7:33 pm
/high fives diesel
April 2nd, 2009 at 7:33 pm
Now I wish the Bears would have picked up T.O.
sportsgal: on the other post when it got announced I said who would think that the Bills and the Bears would make the two big dramatic moves this offseason. They’re like the last two teams you would think of, very cautious, not willing to take a risk.
April 2nd, 2009 at 7:35 pm
just got a BJ
/high fives
//is it my birthday?
April 2nd, 2009 at 7:36 pm
silly clown- yep, that sucked. but it is the same total number of playoff wins that Romo has.
April 2nd, 2009 at 7:37 pm
either way, it is sounding very Fetch like.
April 2nd, 2009 at 7:37 pm
tory holt is still out there isnt he?
April 2nd, 2009 at 7:38 pm
tory holt is still out there isnt he?
I don’t know, but I think Willie Gault and Dennis McKinnon are available
April 2nd, 2009 at 7:38 pm
I’m not a bears fan, but that offensive line looks better and better. They should be able to run it, if those old guys stay healthy, in addition to passing it. Don’t underestimate that Pace signing. He’s on his way to the Hall.
April 2nd, 2009 at 7:38 pm
mrejr! YOure thinking!!!!
April 2nd, 2009 at 7:39 pm
that was wrong of me, sorry fetch.
April 2nd, 2009 at 7:40 pm
What about Harrison? Harrison and Holt?
April 2nd, 2009 at 7:41 pm
then they can sign Vick to be third down back!!!
April 2nd, 2009 at 7:41 pm
Dirt- He could be like willie Roaf good till hes retired.
April 2nd, 2009 at 7:41 pm
Pitt is about 5′10. Saw him at a red carpet function. No chance he is 6 foot unless he’s wearing platforms.
April 2nd, 2009 at 7:41 pm
i thought i would try it iut and see what it was like
April 2nd, 2009 at 7:43 pm
harrison and holt????? ruck dont play with me…that would be…just incredible. marvin might be a34 steps slower but he is hungry to prove he isnt washed up and holt has at least a couple years left.
April 2nd, 2009 at 7:44 pm
I’m going with Pitt. He’s had much more training.
April 2nd, 2009 at 7:44 pm
It doesn’t even matter how good the receivers are. They can run the ball simply because Cutler can actually put the ball where he wants to. They can have two slow guys and stupid Devin Hester, and Forte will run through big holes, because the defense has to cover 2 tight ends and two slow receivers. Torry Holt makes sense because of Lovie Smith and the Rams, plus he’s washed up, but can totally catch.
I’m big on the Pace signing.
@Tampa – Willie Roaf helped the Chiefs immensely. Usually guys that good just decide they don’t want to go that hard anymore. I’m glad Pace feels like there’s something left to prove. I’ll write his Cooperstown speech, and I hated those Rams.
April 2nd, 2009 at 7:44 pm
Torry Holt? Come on now. I know we’re all excited, but let’s not overdo it here.
April 2nd, 2009 at 7:45 pm
Wait, let me get him out of Cooperstown and put him in Canton, please.
April 2nd, 2009 at 7:46 pm
I don’t think Harrison is hungry to do anything, really. He had the same motivation to prove the critics wrong last year and he alligator-armed many a pass and cut short many a route. And he also wouldn’t have the same relationship/timing with Cutler he had with Manning, which was the best QB-WR wavelength we’ve seen since Unitas to Berry. The only place Harrison will probably play is Philadelphia.
April 2nd, 2009 at 7:46 pm
colts in the super bowl? optimistic … but also not a surprise seeing as its from a colts fan.
now that the west has been reduced to the chargers and shit … why wouldn’t SD definitely be in the 12-13 win category ?
what you have forgotten was that if not for that sage stupidity … who knows if the colts would have even made the playoffs?
April 2nd, 2009 at 7:46 pm
Do you know what’s good about Torry Holt? 2 Things. #1: Unlike Devin Hester, he can catch a ball thrown at him. #2: He’s available, and your receivers suck.
April 2nd, 2009 at 7:46 pm
SG hes better than anyone on our roster. WHy not hes a killer.
April 2nd, 2009 at 7:47 pm
sg fuck it the bears have qb…it just goes to show you nothing is impossibe.
April 2nd, 2009 at 7:47 pm
SHit lets get Marvin Harrison!? RIGHT!?
April 2nd, 2009 at 7:48 pm
“i can put the ball where i want to. I can make it rain out here.”
wedding crashers, which is such a fucking great movie
April 2nd, 2009 at 7:48 pm
two words: Norv. Turner.
April 2nd, 2009 at 7:49 pm
I agree about Harrison. If he sticks around, it’s more for his own #’s than anything. His pride is already wounded, as he refused a pay cut and got his request granted to go away. Now, nobody wants him. He’s slower, he’s shy from contact, and if your precise route running takes too long, it’s like you weren’t even in on the play.
April 2nd, 2009 at 7:49 pm
SG hes better than anyone on our roster. WHy not hes a killer.
He’s no killer

April 2nd, 2009 at 7:50 pm
“we are lions!”
“immortality, take it. it’s yours!”
it’s so on
April 2nd, 2009 at 7:51 pm
jay cutler could shit into a brown bag ,light it on fire, put one on every bears fan doorstep and we would stomp it out and just go “jay you crazy kid…good luck!” with a smile on our faces.
April 2nd, 2009 at 7:51 pm
And if the Chiefs could recover an onside kick the Chargers don’t make the playoffs, and if the Colts pick up two yards on third down they beat the Chargers and face Pittsburgh in Pittsburgh, where they’d won only a month earlier. We can play “what if” all day if you want. San Diego isn’t in the 12-13 win category because this year they don’t play shitty divisions.
April 2nd, 2009 at 7:52 pm
LOL! BUt not better than Old School!
April 2nd, 2009 at 7:52 pm
They play one shitty division – The AFC west. That’s 6-0 right there.
April 2nd, 2009 at 7:53 pm
teams stopped kicking to him.
April 2nd, 2009 at 7:53 pm
Maybe they should’ve taken out that first part… I’m picturing a Zoolander type photoshoot… You’re a lion…Rawr…
April 2nd, 2009 at 7:54 pm
It’s ok, I didn’t get it anyways. Bring the funny next time and you won’t have to apologize.
April 2nd, 2009 at 7:57 pm
TBL, you’re really taking nerdiness to an entirely new level. Easy on the lame movie lines, big guy.
You could make the argument that a washed up Torry Holt or Marvin Harrison are better than the current options the Bears have at wide receiver, but I’d rather use a 2nd round on a rookie WR or better yet somehow land Boldin. Oh how I wish the Cardinals were dumb enough to do a Boldin-for-Urlacher trade.
April 2nd, 2009 at 7:59 pm
earl bennet was cutlers fave target in college…lets not forget that.
/wishful thinking
April 2nd, 2009 at 8:02 pm
is there a tbl streak for cash group?
still want to take last in someones fantasy baseball group.
what the fuck is on TV tonight besides the (other) Office? and PSU BU?
April 2nd, 2009 at 8:03 pm
torry holt, earl bennet, devin hester, brandon lloyd, rashied davis and greg olsen…torry holt would put us over the hump…and from what i have read earl bennet is going tp be #2 reciever next to devin unless the bears get someone else…like holt
April 2nd, 2009 at 8:04 pm
Brandon Lloyd when healthy is good.

So do you think Obama had anything to do with this!?
April 2nd, 2009 at 8:23 pm
+1
im still not voting for him in ‘12 if he did.
April 2nd, 2009 at 8:27 pm
I wouldn’t put it past him. He is an alcoholic. Bears fans are enablers!
April 2nd, 2009 at 8:29 pm
if being a alcoholic makes him throw the ball the way he does then i might start drinking. sour grapes yysa?
April 2nd, 2009 at 8:31 pm
not at all but his alcohol consumption is what scared McDaniels alot. I am in the same boat as Bears fans. Good to Great QB at times that wilts in December
April 2nd, 2009 at 8:31 pm
doug buffone is gonna get on the score and sound drunk and proclaim the bears super bowl champs already.
April 2nd, 2009 at 8:33 pm
yup he was the cause of the broncos collapse..not the defense…good call
April 2nd, 2009 at 8:40 pm
well the 4td’s to 5 Ints certainly did not help
April 2nd, 2009 at 8:44 pm
having to throw constantly because they were always behind helped alot. i can play this game all day.
more throws than normal = more picks
13-1 in games when the defense allows less than 21 pts
April 2nd, 2009 at 8:45 pm
Most QB’s can say that, though. Shit, Peyton Manning’s won 25 straight games when his defense has allowed 20 points or less.
April 2nd, 2009 at 8:46 pm
Watch for the Donk’s to go after Sam Bradford next year with the 2 #1’s. They will keep Orton for this year: Schedule next year: Ravens, Pittsburgh, New England and the NFC East. We would have been 6-10 anyway. I like the move. The schedule buys McDaniels 1 year to get Bradford and then move forward. Great move by the Bronc’s.
April 2nd, 2009 at 8:47 pm
YES BEARSSSSSSSSSSSSS!
A real live qb in my life time.
“not at all but his alcohol consumption is what scared McDaniels alot”
He will enjoy Orton than.
April 2nd, 2009 at 8:53 pm
Half of some white guy on Penn State’s face is still on the court.
April 2nd, 2009 at 8:53 pm
cutler – 616 atts
manning- 555 atts
if cutler had manning’s defense im sure they would have made and done some damage in the playoffs
April 2nd, 2009 at 8:55 pm
the only person who attempted more passes last year was brees and did they make the playoffs? nay
April 2nd, 2009 at 8:57 pm
You must have missed Darren Sproles running through Manning’s defense then. Cutler’s good, don’t get me wrong, but he’s not even comparable to Manning. Is it possible someday? Possible, but highly unlikely.
April 2nd, 2009 at 9:01 pm
manning is leaps and bounds better than jay but the colts offense is known to like to throw the ball and the broncos threw more. thats the point i was making i wasnt comparing the skills of jay and peyton. and the colts defense is better than what the broncos had.
colts 7th defense
broncos 30th defense.
/science
April 2nd, 2009 at 9:01 pm
the fuckin texans better make the playoffs this year or kubiak might be looking for a job
April 2nd, 2009 at 9:01 pm
Yeah 138/210, 65.7%, 1,490 yards, 83.9 rating in last 5 games. That sure is “wilting”
April 2nd, 2009 at 9:05 pm
Oh you mean the picture from him drinking in 2006, before it was known he had diabetes? Mc Dipshit will have to trade away a lot of players if having a drink scares him off.
April 2nd, 2009 at 9:05 pm
That’s because the Colts offense is more efficient, but neither of them have a running game worth a shit.
April 2nd, 2009 at 9:06 pm
the patriots trade moss to the bears for a 12 pack of olde style and a large chicago style pizza!
/i wish
April 2nd, 2009 at 9:08 pm
They did a descent job salvaging a shitty situation that they created. But I have a bad feeling it’s going to be a long decade for us Bronco fans.
April 2nd, 2009 at 9:10 pm
mcdaniels pulled a classic patriots type move..now he needs to draft well…2 picks in the top twenty aint bad, orton did look decent at parts last year
not to farmiliar with the bears, is their defense still any good?
April 2nd, 2009 at 9:11 pm
They were decent Sage Rosenfels sucked a fat cock.
What if the Broncos get Bean Wells THey have shitty running backs.
April 2nd, 2009 at 9:12 pm
addai and rhodes is better than what jay had. i think they tried to get terrell davis out of retirement
Peyton Hillis 12 68 343 28.6 5.0 19 5 0 0
Michael Pittman 8 76 320 40.0 4.2 20 4 0 0
Selvin Young 8 61 303 37.9 5.0 49 1 1 1
Tatum Bell 7 44 249 35.6 5.7 37 2 0 0

April 2nd, 2009 at 9:16 pm
The Broncos line was MUCH better than what the Colts fielded last year. Unless you’re Barry Sanders, if your line sucks, you’re going to suck.

that was probably the only thing better on the broncos
manning 14 sacks
cutler 11 sacks
April 2nd, 2009 at 9:21 pm
springfield,illinois america’s asshole msu you?
April 2nd, 2009 at 9:23 pm
I was talking about run blocking, but the Colts pass blocking was shit, too. Manning doesn’t take sacks because he feels the pressure so well gets rid of the ball so quickly, ergo sacks allowed is a misleading stat. Cutler hasn’t developed that ability yet, but he could in time.
April 2nd, 2009 at 9:24 pm
born in England, moved to Atlanta, GA at age 6. Moved to Michigan at age 10. been here since.
April 2nd, 2009 at 9:26 pm
The Colts O-line is amazing in my opinion bsanders. They have to work so much harder than other teams b/c they have to hold their stance for about 30 seconds every play. They have to be exhausted at the end of drives.
April 2nd, 2009 at 9:26 pm
that must have been a culture shock.
April 2nd, 2009 at 9:29 pm
yea, i didnt know what baseball was when i got here.
April 2nd, 2009 at 9:30 pm
“He and DeShaun Jackson were the only two in the league that had impact seasons. I’d say that equals a low success rate for 1st year WRs.”
illformula, I’m about five hours late with this cause I was in class…but don’t you think Jay Cutler had something to do with the success of Eddie Royal? I’m not saying they’ll get another Eddie Royal in the second round, but whoever they do land, Cutler will get the best out of him
April 2nd, 2009 at 9:30 pm
playing against the colts on madden is fucking annoying. manning uses the whole clock to do his seizure at the line of scrimmage
April 2nd, 2009 at 9:33 pm
you poor soul. what other evil things do the english do? i hear they have this thing where they kick a ball around for like 4 hours without any real progress and that sometimes they end in a tie. any truth to that rumor?
April 2nd, 2009 at 9:33 pm
They don’t hold their stance the entire time Manning is gesticulating, if you watch them they’re standing up, pointing out LB’s as Manning’s yelling out signals. Up until this year, they were great. But Ugoh can’t stay healthy, Lilja never played a down in 2008, Scott signed with the Titans, Diem declined rapidly almost overnight and their rookie guard got destroyed at the point of attack in the running game. Next year they should be much better via health alone, and hopefully some added experience from their young guys.
April 2nd, 2009 at 9:37 pm
when do the regular season schedules come out?
April 2nd, 2009 at 9:38 pm
nope. just a hour and a half. I think your talking about the greatest game ever? Footbal…barring the two years in 7 and 8th grade, the only sport I’ve ever played.

April 2nd, 2009 at 9:41 pm
wow espn 1000 in chicago is just destroying cutler right now. the reporter says “jay cutler for some reason can throw for 400 yds and lose by two points granted he has a poor defense and granted he doesnt have a running game” you just answered your “for some reason”
and then he goes “and for some reason kyle orton could throw for 125 yds and win buy 3 granted he has a defense and a good running game” this guy gets paid for this crap i guess
April 2nd, 2009 at 9:41 pm

April 2nd, 2009 at 9:45 pm
Yep, we lost there in 2006 when Ron Dayne ran wild, the Colts had about six possessions and the Texans hit a FG as time expired. It was Xmas Eve and I was flying into Chicago and following the game on my cell phone and couldn’t believe it when the final score popped up.
Very much so. It makes up for the late 80s, early 90s, but I fully expect them to revert to annual 3-13 seasons when Polian and Manning leave.

bsanders you are the only one who might have seen it, “Angels in America”. If you have what did you think?
April 2nd, 2009 at 10:02 pm
I think it’s an amazing work of art and has so much energy, intelligence, wit and pathos packed into it I’m still amazed it got made. Only HBO could do it. The writing, acting, directing – all superb. But keep in mind I’m a liberal commie whose political views are very much aligned with Kushner’s (I also used to work for the same place as his “husband”) so I’m probably biased.

we need another cold war…and some dominate russians athletes in soccer and then have a bunch of 170 lb college kids from america meet them in the world cup final…then i will watch it. i want my generation’s “do you believe in miracles?!”.
and i wonder what the russion announcer sounded like on the other side. was he just like saying cuss words in russian? we may never know.

April 2nd, 2009 at 10:48 pm
Doesn’t help that every one of those players, with the exception of T-Mobile Bell ended the season on the IR. The lowest yardage per carry was 4.2 by Pittman (goalline back). Teams would love to have that. And Ryan Torain, if healthy, is the real deal.

triston thanks for helping prove my point that denver barely had arunning game last year. thats what i was saying
April 2nd, 2009 at 11:49 pm

April 2nd, 2009 at 11:55 pm
mrejr, Denver had the 12th ranked rushing attack. Chicago was 24th. Where are you trying to go with this?
April 3rd, 2009 at 12:30 am
So I’m watching NFL Live right now and Mark Schlereth pretty much called Orton a tough, solid, decision maker and Cutler a big dripping pussy.
April 3rd, 2009 at 12:39 am
Schlereth is a fucking joke. How can ANYONE say one first round draft pick (in the bottom half of the round, no less) and one next year in who knows what spot will be a greater value than Jay Cutler? It doesn’t even matter that Angelo has a history of picking badly in the first round. There was no way the Bears could address every single need with two first round draft picks.
April 3rd, 2009 at 1:36 am
Besides making assumptions for who the Bears sign next, how about…
Who makes the playoffs first? Bears or Broncos?
Or, which division is better (worse)? AFC West or NFC North?
