There were only five games last night; these are supposedly those games.

Nationals 3, Braves 2: Playing in awful weather and in front of basically nobody, the Nationals squeaked one out with new life behind 22-year old pitching prospect Jordan Zimmerman and a revamped bullpen. For a day, Manny Acta’s postgame interview did not involve a DDT.

Pirates 8, Marlins 0: Yankee fans will remember this name: Ross Ohlendorf. He came over in the Nady/Marte trade last July, and last night he shut down the hottest team in baseball with seven innings of two-hit ball. This stat is kind of insane: With four shutouts, the Pirates already have twice as many as they did last season. It’s nice to see the Pirates doing things that don’t suck.

Reds 4, Astros 3: The most shocking thing about this game is that Arthur Rhodes got out of a bases loaded jam in the eighth. Actually, after taking a quick look, Rhodes hasn’t given up a run in six appearances this year. Maybe I should just move on. Joey Votto’s two-run double in the seventh put the Reds up for good.

Red Sox 12, Orioles 1: Do the Red Sox ever lose on Patriots’ Day? They always seem to steamroll whoever they play on this festive morning. Pedroia led the beating for Boston with 3 RBI, Ortiz and Lowell had 2 RBI, and five others had an RBI each. Baltimore has lost five straight, so naturally, McNulty took it out on the bar.

D-Backs 6, Rockies 3: Coming into the game Arizona’s offense had more strikeouts than hits, but last night they got big contributions from Mark Reynolds (2 RBI) and backup catcher Miguel Montero (3 RBI), who both went deep. Amazingly, these two teams played each other in the 2007 NLCS.
