Yardwork: The Pirates Are Almost in First Place
Baseball April 23rd. 2009, 11:15am
Pirates 7, Marlins 4: The Pirates sweep. Brothers LaRoche combined for five hits and 3 RBI and Pittsburgh is 9-6, off to their best start since 2002. Matt Capps got his fifth save of the year and has yet to give up a run. However, Dave Littlefield is sorley missed at PNC Park, and so is painfully suave lifeguard Jason Bay.
Blue Jays 8, Rangers 7: B.J. Ryan has already blown two saves this year (including one last night) and his fastball is only topping out at 86 mph, but Toronto keeps winning. Last night it was Kevin Millar’s double off Darren O’Day in the bottom of the 11th. A stat that might help Toronto sound more legit: They’re 20 games over .500 with a record of 60-40 since Cito took over.
Yankees 9, A’s 7: Among the five home runs hit at Yankee Stadium yesterday, four came from slugging behemoths Kurt Suzuki, Derek Jeter and Melky Cabrera, who had two; his second being a walk-off two-run shot in the bottom of the 14th. CC was a sloppy mess (6 ER), coughing up leads three different times.
Brewers 3, Phillies 1: Braden Looper shut out the Phillies for six innings. That’s three straight great starts from Looper, who’s now 2-0 with a 2.12 ERA. If you currently have this expression, you’re not alone.
Red Sox 10, Twins 1; Red Sox 7, Twins 3: Boston was all over the Twins in the doubleheader with Tim Wakefield and Brad Penny picking up the wins. Big Papi is still without a home run, which will no doubt come against the Yankees this weekend.
Royals 2, Indians 0: Brian Bannister got the call from AAA and outdueled Cliff Lee. You may now pick him up off the waiver wire.
Giants 1, Padres 0: Bengie Molina’s pinch-hit double in bottom of the 10th won it for the Giants. A completely incoherent conference call with all five of his brothers surely followed.

Tigers 12, Angels 10.
Slugfest won by the good guys with a 5 run 7th inning. Verlander still struggling, but bailed out by the offense.
BTW – Indians suck ass.

Stick with him Hernia. He was throwing serious heat last night, just couldn’t locate his off-speed pitches and got killed because of it. He is coming around and will be winning soon.

pirates: one of these days, that palace of a ballpark will have a decent team to match.
i’ve yet to go to camden yards or petco. been to wrigley several times. but for my money, pnc park is a jewel of a stadium. even with a shitty team i try to go to a game or two there each summer.

Definitely looks like he got his swing back, he hit one hard, high off the wall that’s a homerun anywhere else. Starting to hit the ball to left field, 3 multi hit games in the last 5. I dont think its a coincidence that on Sunday, Magadan(hitting coach) said he noticed a problem in Ortiz’s swing.

Did he hit the wall more than once? The one I saw that hit the wall is an out in most other places.

cards won another over the mets, that’s why the pirates aren’t in first.
jimmy, i’ve got a buddy who’s been to every park (except for the new ones this year) and he always says that pnc is his second favorite, behind seattle. it’s a shame they can’t get more than 10k to a game there on a regular basis.

hernia: Ortiz is just waiting to get to Yankee Stadium so those 20 pop up outs to short right he made in the first two weeks will be HR’s

Attendance is going to lack while the Pens are still playing. Pirates have relegated themselves to 3rd place in this city. Plus, who wants to go to evening games when it’s 30 to 40 degrees. After summer hits, they’ll get decent (15k plus on weekdays, 25k plus on weekends) crowds, particularly if they keep playing like this.

i went to pnc 2 summers ago on the 4th of july. incredible place. the best part was listening to all these yankees sing along with big&rich after the game.

PNC is the best park I’ve been to. Great sightlines, Wrigley-esque feel, beautiful scenery (the rivers and skyline, not the chicks). Great, great, great place to watch a ballgame…

Pirates could could COULD be on the rise. With Tabata, Alvarez, and McCutchen all expected to make their breakthrough soon, it will get interesting. Plus the other McCutchen could be a solid third starter in that lineup.
If only Brad Lincoln’s fucking arm could hold together.

I’ll vomit if Tabata explodes.
