A 33-year-old Tight End is Worth a 2nd Round Draft Pick?
1-liner, NFL, NFL Draft April 23rd. 2009, 3:30pmTony Gonzalez: The Chiefs TE was dealt to the Falcons today in exchange for a 2nd round draft pick. And the first draft-trade scoop goes to Fox’s Jay Glazer. Seems like a high price to pay for an aging TE whose best years are definitely behind him, but at least Matt Ryan gets another weapon on offense. Gonzalez is sure to come in handy in the red zone. The Chiefs get back the 2nd round pick they traded away to New England for Cassel and Vrabel (albeit 21 spots lower). Logical conclusion: McNabb weeps, puts pressure on the team to trade for Anquan Boldin.

Given how Gonzalez has continued to shine in spite of the Chiefs’ ineptitude, I’d say it’s a good deal for all involved.

96 grabs for 1058 yards and 10 touchdowns. Yep, he sucks.

They overpaid, based on how good a tight end you can get in the second round, but I think this guy’s got a couple of years left. He starts in front Ben Hartsock, but they’ll probably just run more 2 tight end sets.

Like the deal.
Gonzo has a few years left in the tank. Look at his yearly numbers. No decline. He just turned 33.

More douchebag commentary in Philly media on this one as if Tony Gonzalez was the second coming. He is still playing at his prime level, but when will that level off?
No need to rush to judgement, but I am confident that if Gonzalez is injured or has a bad season, all of a sudden the local Philly media will forget about the matter. Alternatively, if he shines again, they’ll just escalate the bitching and moaning that they love so much here as usual.
