Newspapers Buddying Up With ESPN
1-liner, ESPN, Media Gossip/Musings April 24th. 2009, 3:00pmMedia Musings: A week late, but too interesting to pass up – newspapers give away their product for free online, but now they’re going to give it away to ESPN. But not for free! In exchange for radio and TV interviews on baseball tonight and “partner placement” (read: not money). “The network is building a Baseball Tonight Reporting Network, partnering with baseball beat writers at newspapers around the country. In exchange for a beat writer’s submission of notes-type information on their respective teams and occasional appearances by phone on Baseball Tonight, newspapers will receive numerous “partner placements” on ESPN.com.” (APSE)

This reminded me of an article I read today
This line jumped out at me:
Newspapers give lifetime job guarantees?? Is this normal???

Better question, how do you eliminate it? You guaranteed a job, for life. You have to kill them to save money. Is it worth it?

Not a lot different than millions of retired union workers being paid $75K/year plus health benefits while those currently employed are losing their jobs.
I’m looking at you UAW and Teacher retirees!

But, they’re teachers. To put up with other people’s kids for 20-30 years, that’s the least they can do.

I don’t think it’s a stretch to say that teachers are a fuck ton more important to this country than auto workers.

@mak: I agree to a point, but when I lived in NYS, the teacher’s union was a joke. Those teachers made ridiculous coin for life by doing what a lot of union do: bank vacation and use it to retire early, or to increase their last few year’s pay, which is what their pension is based on.
I knew union guys who would work ridiculous OT for the last 2-3 years they worked, raise their pay by 40%, and then get a pension based on those last two year’s pay (plus healthcare for life). It’s killing today’s companies & is what makes the US uncompetitive.
